HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Wall mounted and multi-split air conditioning in Barnet, installed by F-Gas certified engineers. Cools in summer, heats in winter, and 0% VAT applies on most residential installations.

Less than most people expect. A typical wall unit costs about 11p an hour to cool one room and about 17p an hour to heat it. Put in your own electricity rate and see what it would cost you.
Air conditioning installation in Barnet, from a single unit in the loft bedroom of a Whetstone semi to a ducted system serving every bedroom of a house on the Totteridge ridge. F-Gas registered engineers, heat pump equipment that warms the room in winter as well as cooling it in summer, zero VAT on domestic work under the HMRC relief now in force, and a fixed price in writing before anything is fixed to a wall. The first lives in one of the borough’s thousands of interwar semis, in Whetstone, East Barnet, Friern Barnet, Mill Hill, Finchley or Hendon, has a converted loft or a home office that is intolerable from June to September, and wants one room fixed for a sensible sum. The second owns a large house in Totteridge, Arkley, Monken Hadley, Hadley Wood or Hampstead Garden Suburb with six bedrooms, a glazed kitchen extension, a cinema room and a garden office, and wants the whole of it cooled without a box on every wall. The third lives in a flat at Colindale, around Brent Cross, in Golders Green or on the High Road at North Finchley, and wants to know whether it can be done at all. We do all three, and the answer to the third is usually yes.

A house with eight rooms to cool does not want eight outdoor units. It wants one or two, sited out of sight, feeding the rooms through a multi split or a ducted system. A multi split runs up to four or five indoor units from one outdoor unit, each room on its own control. A ducted system tucks the indoor unit above a ceiling or in the roof space and feeds the bedrooms through grilles, so nothing is seen in the rooms at all, and it suits the ridge houses where the architecture matters and the loft is big enough to work in. On the largest houses two ducted units, one per floor, or a ducted unit upstairs and wall units in the extension and the garden office, is the usual shape. We design it around the house rather than sell a standard package, and the survey is where that happens.
Barnet Council’s conservation area list runs to seventeen, and several of them are where the borough’s air conditioning is wanted most: Totteridge, Monken Hadley, Mill Hill, Wood Street, Finchley Church End, Hendon The Burroughs, Golders Green Town Centre, the Watling Estate and Hampstead Garden Suburb. Within a conservation area a unit on the elevation that faces the street generally falls outside permitted development, and on a listed building any external unit needs consent. Hampstead Garden Suburb adds a layer of its own, because the Suburb’s Trust controls external alterations under its scheme of management, and an outdoor unit there is proposed to the Trust before it is bought. In Totteridge and Monken Hadley the plots are large enough that the unit almost always has a discreet position at the side or rear, and we find it at survey before quoting, so the price is for a lawful installation and not for one that has to be moved later.
Interwar semis house a large part of Barnet and the loft conversion is where most of Barnet overheats. The room sits directly under the roof, is insulated to hold heat, has a dormer facing south or west, and by mid afternoon in July is unusable. A single wall mounted unit with its outdoor partner low on the rear wall, a condensate pump because the room is at the top of the house, and the pipe run boxed down the back, is a day’s work and ends the problem. The same unit heats the room on a January morning for a fraction of what heating the whole house with gas would cost.
The outdoor unit is the question in a flat. The wall or the balcony belongs to the freeholder, the lease says what may be attached to it, and the managing agent decides. In the newer blocks at Colindale and around Brent Cross a balcony installation is often achievable with written consent, and in the converted Edwardian houses of Golders Green and Cricklewood a ground floor flat with its own garden is straightforward. We tell you precisely what to ask the agent for, and we quote once the answer is in.
All the equipment we install is heat pump equipment. It moves heat out of the room in summer and into it in winter, and for a single room, a loft, an office, an annexe, a garden room, in the months either side of the heating season it is generally cheaper than running the gas boiler for the whole house. In the bigger Barnet houses the garden office and the annexe often have no heating at all, and the air conditioning becomes their heating without anyone intending it. It is worth planning for at the quote rather than discovering afterwards.
Barnet’s most desirable streets are also its quietest, and an outdoor unit that would go unnoticed beside the A1000 is audible on a still evening in Totteridge Lane or a Suburb close. We choose the unit for its sound rating as well as its capacity, put it on anti vibration feet, keep it away from bedroom windows on both sides of the fence, and where a house has a plant room or a garage the unit can sometimes go there with a short duct to outside, which takes it out of earshot altogether. Where the only practical position will be heard next door we say so at survey, before the neighbour finds out from the noise.
The pipe run between the units is kept short, insulated and boxed. Condensate from each indoor unit is drained by gravity where the room is on the ground floor and by a small pump where it is not, and the route of that drain is planned before the first hole. Every system is pressure tested with nitrogen, pulled to a deep vacuum and charged by F-Gas registered engineers, because handling refrigerant without that registration is illegal and a system that was not vacuumed properly never performs as it should. On the ridge, where the outdoor unit may be more exposed to wind and weather than in a sheltered side return, the unit is mounted on a base or bracket that suits the position, on anti vibration feet, and away from any bedroom window, yours or a neighbour’s.
Survey, supply, installation and commissioning by our own engineers, with the trunking run properly.
An air to air heat pump installed in a home counts as an energy saving material for the purposes of HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, and the whole job, equipment and labour, is zero rated until 31 March 2027. It applies to houses and flats, not to business premises, and it makes a considerable difference on a ducted system for a large house. The VAT position is written on our quote.
The range in Barnet is wider than almost anywhere we work, because a single unit in a loft and a two floor ducted system for a house on the ridge are not the same purchase. The price moves with the number of rooms, the type of system, the length and difficulty of the pipe runs, the outdoor unit position and whether access equipment is needed. What does not move is the figure once we have given it: a fixed price in writing, VAT position stated, and nothing added once the engineer is in the loft. Where one unit in one room will solve the problem we say so, and where a house needs a designed system we design it.
A yearly service keeps the filters clean, the condensate line clear, the refrigerant pressure right and the outdoor unit free of the leaves that Barnet’s gardens are generous with. A serviced system runs quieter, costs less and outlives a neglected one by years, and on a ducted installation the service includes the grilles and the ductwork. We service what we fit and what others fitted.
The air conditioning installers in Barnet who quote your job are the engineers who fit it: F-Gas registered, used to the borough’s conservation areas and to the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust, and equipped for a single loft unit or a ducted system across a ridge house. Air conditioning installation in Barnet is priced after a survey of the elevation, with the VAT position written on the quote, and nothing is added once the work starts.
A large house being fitted with air conditioning usually has its heating on the list too: boiler installation in Barnet. A ducted unit in the roof space is designed at the same time as a loft en suite, see bathroom renovation in Barnet. Radiators with a cold band along the base need power flushing in Barnet.

Yes. A ducted system in the loft with grilles in each bedroom, or a multi split from one outdoor unit, is how it is done.
Often, with the Trust’s approval for the outdoor unit and a position that does not affect the elevation. We prepare what the Trust needs to see.
Yes. Domestic air to air heat pumps are zero rated until 31 March 2027.
A day, including the condensate pump and the pipe run.
Yes. It is a heat pump and heats as efficiently as it cools, and for a garden office it is usually the only heating needed.
Often. It depends on the managing agent’s written agreement to the outdoor unit, and we brief you on what to request.
It depends on the number of rooms and where the outdoor unit can go, so we price every installation after a free survey and give you a fixed written quote. A single-room split system is the starting point; a multi-split serves several rooms from one outdoor unit. We install Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG and Samsung and there is no call-out fee in working hours.
Yes. The split systems we install are air-to-air heat pumps, so the same unit heats in winter and cools in summer. In heating mode a modern unit delivers around three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, which makes it one of the cheapest ways to heat a single room, home office or extension.
Usually not. In England a domestic outdoor unit under 1.5 cubic metres (0.6 for a flat), not on a pitched roof and not on a front wall facing the road, falls within permitted development following the 2025 rule change. Listed buildings and conservation areas are the exceptions, and leaseholders need the freeholder’s consent. We tell you at the survey if your property is one of the exceptions.
Less than most people expect. A typical single-room unit draws around 0.5 to 1 kW while running, so an evening of cooling costs a few tens of pence at current tariffs, and in heating mode it is usually cheaper per unit of heat than a plug-in electric heater. Keeping the filters clean and having the system serviced keeps it at that level.
Yes. Vantage is F-Gas certified through Refcom, registration REF1024550, which is a legal requirement for anyone installing or working on air conditioning refrigerant circuits. Every installation is commissioned, leak-tested and comes with a 12 month labour guarantee on top of the manufacturer warranty.
