Cooling is only half of what these units do
Most people call us in July. The units earn their keep in February.
A modern split system is an air to air heat pump. Run in reverse it extracts heat from outside air and delivers it into the room, and it does it at an efficiency that electric panel heaters and fan heaters cannot approach, typically producing several units of heat for each unit of electricity. It will still produce useful heat well below freezing.
That is worth thinking about in SG9, because this is a big rural district and not everything is on mains gas. Plenty of the hamlets and farms across the 47 square miles of the district run on oil, LPG or direct electric heating. If you have a garden room, an annexe, a converted outbuilding or a home office heated by an electric radiator, a single wall mounted split will heat it far more cheaply and cool it in summer.
It will not replace a whole house heating system. For individual rooms, particularly ones that were never part of the original heated envelope, it is often the best answer there is.
The systems we install
Wall mounted split systems. One indoor unit, one outdoor unit, refrigerant pipework and a condensate drain between them. The straightforward option for a bedroom, a home office or a living room, and far less intrusive than the units people remember from offices twenty years ago.
Multi split systems. Two to five indoor units running from one outdoor unit. The sensible answer when several rooms need treating and there is only one acceptable place to put an outdoor unit, which in a terraced or conservation area property is often the deciding factor.
Ducted and concealed systems. Where the indoor unit is hidden in a loft void or a bulkhead and air is delivered through grilles. More work, more disruption, better looking. Usually specified during a loft conversion or a larger refurbishment rather than retrofitted afterwards.

Where the outdoor unit goes, and why that is the whole conversation in Buntingford
An outdoor unit needs a solid mounting position, clear airflow, a route for refrigerant pipework and somewhere for condensate to go. It also has to sit where it will not be a nuisance to a neighbour, which in a town with a long narrow High Street and tight rear yards is a real constraint.

The properties where air conditioning gets interesting

Modern homes are built airtight and well insulated, which is right in January and works against you in July. Add large windows, a sunny aspect and a bedroom under a warm roof and you get rooms that will not cool down overnight. Condensate, and the detail that separates a good install from a bad one
An indoor unit removes moisture from the air, and that water has to go somewhere. Done properly it runs to a drain point with a continuous fall the whole way. Done badly it goes to a pipe poked through the wall that drips down the render, or onto a pump nobody can reach when it fails.
We plan the drain route first, because a unit position that cannot drain is not a unit position. Where a pump is unavoidable we fit a decent one and tell you where it is, so somebody knows where to look in eight years.
The other detail is pipework. Refrigerant lines have to be brazed, pressure tested, vacuumed down properly to remove moisture and non condensables, and charged to the manufacturer’s figures. Skipping the vacuum is the classic corner cut and it is invisible on day one. It shows up as a system that underperforms and fails early. Electrical work is carried out by qualified electricians and certificated as part of the job.
