Running costs

How much will it cost to run?

Less than most people expect. A typical wall unit costs about 11p an hour to cool one room and about 17p an hour to heat it. Put in your own electricity rate and see what it would cost you.

AIR CONDITIONING INSTALLATION IN CHORLEYWOOD

The outdoor unit decides the job

Fitting the indoor unit is the simple part. The question in Chorleywood is where the outdoor unit can go. We found no Three Rivers guidance written specifically for air conditioning, so the council’s general policies apply: in a conservation area, work must preserve or enhance the character of the area, and near the Chilterns it must not harm the landscape or its setting.

The national permitted development rules for heat pumps exclude units used solely for cooling. Ours heat as well as cool, but those rules still do not reach a listed building, are tighter in a conservation area, and a flat generally needs permission. A government blog in June 2026 said a small home often will not need permission if the look of the building is not materially changed, while stressing there is no blanket rule. So we check your address before we quote.

Conservation areas, Article 4 and the Chilterns

Where a Chorleywood outdoor unit gets the closest look.

The Common and the Station Estate

Both are conservation areas with Article 4 directions. Around the Common it covers windows, chimneys, front boundaries and hardstanding. On the Station Estate it covers small alterations to houses. Here the unit belongs at the rear, on the ground or low on a back wall, with trunking run square to the brickwork.

The Chilterns edge

The Neighbourhood Plan places the parish on the boundary of the Chilterns National Landscape, with the Chorleywood House Estate inside it and the Common treated as if it were. A unit seen across open ground matters more here than on a back wall facing a garden.

Loudwater, Heronsgate and listed houses. Loudwater Estate, Outer Loudwater and Heronsgate are conservation areas too. A listed building, such as The Orchard on Shire Lane, has no permitted development rights for an outdoor unit, so listed building consent applies. Across the border in Chenies or Little Chalfont, the decision sits with Buckinghamshire Council.

The national rules, in brief

The Planning Portal’s conditions for an air source heat pump on a house.

Size. The outdoor unit can be up to 1.5 cubic metres on a house, or 0.6 on a block of flats.

Number. A detached house can have two. Otherwise only the first unit counts as permitted development.

Roofs. Not on a pitched roof. On a flat roof, at least 1 metre from the edge.

Conservation areas. Not on a wall or roof facing a road, and not nearer a road than the house itself.

Certification. The installation must meet MCS 020a, the only permitted scheme from 28 May 2026.

Heating, not only cooling. A unit used solely for cooling falls outside these rights.

Price one room online, or have us survey first

A single room in a house outside a conservation area can usually be priced online in a few minutes. Houses on the Common, the Station Estate or the Chilterns edge, flats and multi room systems are better surveyed.

Survey visit

For protected streets, listed houses and several rooms. We look at the wall, the noise and the council’s position, then fix the price.

The rooms that usually need it

Rooms in the roof. The steep roofs of the Station Estate and the larger detached houses hold a lot of loft space, and a converted loft heats up fastest.

Glazed rear extensions. Built for light, and on a sunny afternoon they collect heat.

The home office. A small room with a person and equipment in it gains heat that an open window cannot shift once outside is warmer.

South facing main bedrooms. Comfortable for most of the year, hard to sleep in for a few weeks of it.

Winter warmth too. An air to air heat pump heats as well as cools, which can suit an extension or a loft room that the radiators never quite reach, and is worth a thought in the homes here that are off the gas grid. A June 2026 government post said Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants of £2,500 are being extended to air to air heat pumps. We confirm on the quote whether one applies.

What the outside will look like

Our own installations: outdoor units on proper brackets, pipework in trunking, quiet units indoors.

Air conditioning prices in Chorleywood

From £2,420 for one room, £4,310 for two and £6,150 for three, fitted, with most homes paying 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Our online quote gives that figure for a single room in a few minutes. In Chorleywood the usual additions are a longer pipe run to reach a rear wall, a planning or listed building application where the address calls for one, or a bay suspension near the station. The survey prices each one and fixes the total, with the VAT rate shown.

Quiet units, properly commissioned

We fit Fujitsu and Panasonic wall mounted and multi split systems, choose units by their sound rating, and set outdoor units on anti vibration mounts away from neighbours’ windows. The condensate runs to a proper drain, because we are plumbers as well as air conditioning engineers.

Working on refrigerant needs F-Gas certified engineers and a registered company. Ours are, under REFCOM REF1024550. Each system is pressure tested, evacuated and commissioned to the manufacturer’s procedure, which keeps the warranty in force.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the house. The national permitted development rules for heat pumps exclude units used solely for cooling. The systems we fit heat as well as cool, which helps, but those rules still do not reach a listed building and are tighter in a conservation area, and a flat generally needs permission. We check Three Rivers’ position for your address before we quote.

Both are conservation areas with Article 4 directions. A unit on a wall or roof facing a road falls outside the permitted development rules there, so the outdoor unit goes to the rear or a side that does not face the street, kept low, with an application made where one is needed.

The parish sits on its boundary. The national heat pump rules add no extra condition for National Landscapes, but Three Rivers’ policy expects development in or near the Chilterns to respect its landscape and setting, so we site units out of view.

From £2,420 for one room, £4,310 for two and £6,150 for three, fitted, with most homes paying 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. A long pipe run or a planning application is priced after the survey, and the total is then fixed.

HMRC Notice 708/6 treats air source heat pumps installed in homes as energy saving materials, and an air to air system qualifies. It is zero rated until 31 March 2027. Business premises pay 20%. The rate is written on your quote.

Yes. Every system we fit is an air to air heat pump, so a loft room, a garden room or an extension can use it for warmth in winter as well as cooling in summer.
