Running costs

How much will it cost to run?

Less than most people expect. A typical wall unit costs about 11p an hour to cool one room and about 17p an hour to heat it. Put in your own electricity rate and see what it would cost you.

AIR CONDITIONING IN HARINGEY

What Haringey’s own guidance means for an outdoor unit

The council’s retrofit design guide is blunt about flats: “Flats and apartments are excluded from permitted development so any external works will require permission.” In a conservation area, it says, permission “is often required”, and works to a listed building need listed building consent. Its development management policy DM1 asks new development to “address issues of vibration, noise, fumes, odour, light pollution”, which is the test an outdoor unit is judged against.

On top of that sit the national permitted development rules for heat pumps. They exclude units used solely for cooling. Every system we fit is an air to air heat pump that heats in winter as well, but conservation areas and listed buildings tighten the rules again. So we check the council’s position for your address before we quote, and include the application wherever one is needed.

Where your home sits on the planning question

A house outside a conservation area. Where the national heat pump rules apply, they allow one unit on a terraced or semi-detached house and two on a detached one, up to 1.5 cubic metres, not on a pitched roof and not above ground floor on a wall facing the road. We confirm the council’s view before relying on them.

A house in one of the 28 conservation areas. Muswell Hill, Fortis Green, Crouch End, Highgate and the rest. No unit on a wall or roof facing the road, and the council says permission is often required.

Noel Park, Tower Gardens, Rookfield and Peabody Cottages. Article 4 directions control small external changes here, so we read the direction for your street first.

A listed building. Haringey’s list runs to 471. Heat pumps get no permitted development rights on a listed building, and listed building consent is needed.

A flat, converted or purpose-built. The council’s guidance is that any external works need permission. Add the freeholder’s written consent for the unit and the pipe route.

Noise, everywhere. Policy DM1 expects noise and vibration to be addressed. We choose quiet units, mount them on anti vibration feet and keep them clear of neighbours’ windows.

What air conditioning costs in Haringey

Our online quote prices one room from £2,420, two rooms from £4,310 and three rooms from £6,150, fitted. Most homes pay 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. In Haringey the extras tend to be a planning application for a flat or a conservation area street, a longer pipe run through a converted house, access equipment on a tall Edwardian elevation, or a bay suspension. Each is a separate line after the survey, and the total is fixed.

Two routes to a price

In a house outside a conservation area, a single room can be priced online now. Flats, conservation area streets and listed buildings cover a lot of Haringey, and for those a survey comes first so the planning position is settled before the figure is.

Price online

A few questions about the room and the outside wall, a choice of unit, and the fitted price appears on screen.

Survey visit

For flats, conservation areas, listed buildings and multi room systems. We look at the building, read any lease, confirm what planning applies, and then quote.

The Haringey rooms people want cooled

Top floor of a converted house

Heat rising through the flats below and a roof directly above. One wall mounted split, the outdoor unit on a rear wall or a flat roof, the pipe route agreed with the freeholder and the council’s permission in place before we start.

An Edwardian loft conversion

Bedrooms under the slope of the roof in Muswell Hill and Fortis Green. A multi split serves two or three rooms from one outdoor unit at the back of the house, with the pipework run inside where it can be.

A glazed rear extension

A kitchen extension on a Crouch End or Highgate house, full of glass and with little shade. Blinds help, but on a south or west facing extension a unit is often the answer. The outdoor half goes on the rear wall or the extension roof.

The home office

A box room or garden room with a closed door, a computer and a window facing the sun. A single split, sized to the room and quiet enough for a video call, that also heats the room through the winter.

Outdoor units and pipework we have fitted

Neighbours and planners see the outdoor unit and the trunking, so here are ours.

Quiet units, tidy pipework, certified engineers

Behind most Haringey terraces and semis, gardens back directly onto other gardens, so an outdoor unit is judged by the neighbour whose bedroom faces it. We choose units for a low sound rating, fix them on anti vibration mounts and site them away from windows. Pipework runs in neat trunking, squared off and kept as short as the building allows.

We install Fujitsu and Panasonic wall mounted and multi split systems. Opening a refrigerant circuit legally needs an F-Gas certified engineer working for a registered company, and we are registered with REFCOM under REF1024550. Each system is pressure tested, evacuated and commissioned to the maker’s procedure, so the warranty stands.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the home. For a flat, yes for anything external: the council’s guidance says flats are excluded from permitted development. In a conservation area permission is often required, and a listed building needs listed building consent. For a house outside those, the national heat pump rules may cover a unit that also heats, within limits on size and position, but they exclude units used only for cooling. We check your address before we quote and prepare the application if one is needed.

HMRC classes a residential air to air heat pump as an energy saving material (Notice 708/6), and those are zero rated until 31 March 2027. Business premises pay 20%. The quote states which rate applies.

£2,420 for a single room, £4,310 for two rooms and £6,150 for three, each fitted, on our online quote. A conservation area application, scaffold or a long pipe run is added after the survey, and the price is fixed before work starts.

Usually, with two consents: the freeholder’s or managing agent’s, in writing, for the outdoor unit and pipe route, and the council’s, because flats have no permitted development rights for external works. We deal with the paperwork alongside the survey.

At the back: a rear wall at ground level, the garden, or a flat roof over a back extension. Muswell Hill, Fortis Green, Crouch End and Highgate are all conservation areas, and there a unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing the road under the national rules. We plan the position for noise as well as looks.

Yes. Every system we fit is an air to air heat pump, so it heats as well as cools. In a loft room or a top floor flat it can do the job all year round.

We come back. Our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months and the manufacturer’s warranty covers the equipment, which stays valid because the system was commissioned to their procedure by our REFCOM registered engineers.
