Residential air conditioning qualifies as an energy saving material, so supply and installation at your home is currently zero rated for VAT under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6. That relief runs to 31 March 2027, and it comes off the whole installed price, not just the box on the wall.
Vantage Plumbing and Heating installs air conditioning across Hoddesdon and the EN11 district from our base in Stevenage. Gas Safe registered under 956889 for the heating side of the business, refrigerant work carried out under F-Gas requirements, and 2 years on our workmanship.
Vantage Plumbing and Heating covers Hoddesdon from our base in Stevenage. We are Gas Safe registered under 956889, we carry the common parts on the van, and we guarantee our labour for 2 years.
The indoor unit is the easy half of an air conditioning job. The half that needs thought in this town is the condenser on the outside wall, because a large slice of central Hoddesdon sits inside a conservation area.
The town centre conservation area was designated in June 1968 and enlarged in January 1980. It takes in the Market Place with its clock tower of about 1835, Amwell Street and Burford Street to the north, and the High Street running south to Cock Lane on the west and Yewlands on the east, with the New River forming much of the south eastern boundary. Broxbourne Borough Council’s appraisal splits it into six character areas, and two of them, Woodlands Drive and Upper Marsh Lane, are ordinary residential streets that plenty of owners do not realise carry conservation status.
A domestic outdoor unit can fall under permitted development, but only when the siting, size and noise conditions are met, and conservation area status restricts those rights. On a listed building, and Hoddesdon has serious ones, from the Golden Lion of 1535 to Rathmore House of 1746 at No. 56 High Street, which is Grade II*, you are into listed building consent before anything is drilled. Our answer is to survey for a rear or courtyard position at low level, keep the unit off any elevation facing the street, run the pipework internally or in tidy trunking, and tell you honestly when the address needs the council involved. Checking first costs nothing. Removing a unit the council objects to costs plenty.
Out at High Leigh Garden Village, west of the town and east of the A10, none of that applies. New plots, no heritage designation, and the survey is about the neatest wall and the shortest pipe run.
Loft conversions. The classic call. A converted roof space is insulated to keep winter heat in, which in July means it holds the day’s heat all evening. One small wall unit turns the hottest room in the house into the most comfortable one.
Glazed extensions. Big rear glazing facing south or west picks up heat faster than opening the doors can dump it. A single split sized to the real heat gain solves what a fan never will.
Home offices. A back bedroom with a person, a computer and two screens in it from eight until six is carrying a heat load the house was never built for, and it needs heating in January too. One unit does both jobs.
Flats over the shops in the rebuilt centre. The old town centre was demolished in the 1960s and 1970s and the Tower Centre and Fawkon Walk built in its place, so the flats above and around the shopping streets are largely 1960s and 1970s fabric. A compact split with a carefully positioned condenser is often the only realistic comfort fix, and leasehold consent is usually needed for anything fixed to the outside of the block.
New homes at High Leigh. Around 500 homes are going in across the 97 acre site south of Dinant Link Road, most of them detached and semi detached. Modern building regulations produce airtight, well insulated houses that hold summer heat, and bedrooms on the sunny side are the usual request.
Every split system we fit is an air to air heat pump. Reverse the cycle and it heats the room, delivering several units of heat for each unit of electricity it draws.
That matters more in Hoddesdon than the brochure makes it sound. The High Street spine has buildings running from the 16th century through Georgian, and extending heating pipework through a solid walled or timber framed old building is disruptive and expensive. An air to air unit heats that awkward room, or that garden office, without touching the wet system at all. One machine, both seasons, no radiators moved.
The Lea Valley has been controlling growing temperatures under glass for generations, with around a hundred nurseries in the valley producing a large share of the country’s cucumbers and peppers. Climate control is not a novelty here. It is just newer inside the houses than in the greenhouses.
We work with Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung, LG and Fujitsu, and we choose from those ranges after the survey, based on the heat gain, the pipe route and how quiet the room needs the indoor unit to be.
Wall mounted single splits. One indoor unit, one condenser. The standard answer for a loft room, bedroom or office.
Multi-splits. Two to five indoor units off one outdoor unit. In a conservation area street where a single discreet condenser position is all the elevation will take, this is usually the right design.
Ducted systems. The indoor unit is hidden in a ceiling void or cupboard, air reaching the room through grilles. More work and more money, and worth it in a full refurbishment where wall units would spoil the finish.
Floor mounted units. Low on the wall like a radiator. Useful under windows and in rooms with sloping ceilings, which describes a lot of Hoddesdon lofts.
Sizing is a room by room heat gain calculation, never a guess from floor area. An oversized unit cycles on and off, dehumidifies poorly and makes more noise than it should.
A straightforward single split is a one day job for two engineers. Expect two to three days for a multi-split across three or four rooms.
We agree both unit positions with you before anything comes off the van, core drill the pipe route, and run the refrigerant pipes, interconnecting cable and condensate line together. The condenser goes on brackets or a ground frame with anti-vibration mounts, and on clay ground, which is what most of Hoddesdon sits on, a ground frame needs a proper firm base because London Clay moves as it dries and wets. The system is pressure tested with nitrogen, evacuated to a deep vacuum to remove moisture, charged, commissioned and demonstrated. Electrical work is carried out by qualified electricians and certificated as part of the job.
Condensate is where bad installs show up. A unit in cooling mode makes water all day, and that water needs a continuous fall to a drain or gully, or a small condensate pump where gravity cannot do it. Dripping onto a path or a neighbour’s yard is not acceptable in streets as tight as the older parts of this town, and we terminate it properly every time.
The High Street core. Timber frames behind brick fronts, the White Swan being 16th century and Grade II*, wall paintings turning up during renovations as they did at the former Salisbury Arms in 2014. In fabric like this the pipe route is planned around the building, drilling positions are chosen with care, and consent comes first. These jobs take longer and are worth doing properly.
Yewlands and the Arts and Crafts fringe. Detached houses in big plots on the southern edge of the conservation area, including Grade II houses of 1908 and 1909. Space makes siting easier, but the conservation status and the mature trees the appraisal makes a point of mean positions are still chosen to be invisible from the street.
The Knowle, Cock Lane and Paul’s Lane environs. Residential conservation area streets where a rear, low level condenser and internal pipe runs keep both the council and the neighbours happy.
Rye Park and the streets towards Rye House. North eastern Hoddesdon around Rye House station, handy access, generally simpler siting, and multi-splits serving the upstairs bedrooms are the common request.
High Leigh. Modern cavity construction, straightforward drilling, quick tidy installs, usually a day.
We do not publish a fixed price for air conditioning because a single split on a modern High Leigh wall and a multi-split threaded through a listed High Street building are not the same job.
The price moves with the number of indoor units, the length and difficulty of the pipe route, wall bracket versus ground frame, whether a condensate pump is needed, and the making good. What you get from us is a written itemised quote after a proper survey, with the 0% VAT where the installation qualifies position shown clearly while the relief applies to residential supply and install under VAT Notice 708/6, currently to 31 March 2027.
An annual service keeps the system efficient: filters cleaned, coils checked, condensate route confirmed clear, refrigerant charge verified. Many manufacturers make regular servicing a condition of the equipment warranty, depending on the brand and its terms, so it pays to read what your paperwork asks for. Servicing covers both systems we’ve fitted and systems installed by other firms.
Refrigerants are fluorinated gases and handling them is regulated. Our installation, servicing and decommissioning work is done under F-Gas requirements, including proper recovery when an old system comes out rather than venting it.
Plenty of cooling enquiries in this town start life as heating problems, a loft room the radiators never reach or a boiler due for replacement anyway. It is worth pricing both at once rather than paying twice for access. Often not, if the outdoor unit meets the permitted development conditions. But the town centre conservation area, designated in 1968 and enlarged in 1980, restricts those rights, and it covers residential streets like Woodlands Drive and Upper Marsh Lane as well as the High Street. Listed buildings need consent. We check your address before we design anything.
Sometimes. Residential air to air heat pump installations can be zero rated as an energy saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, and that relief is due to run to 31 March 2027. Whether a particular job qualifies depends on the system, the property and how the work is carried out, so we check your job against the rules and show the VAT position on the quotation rather than assuming it.
Yes. These are air to air heat pumps, and in heating mode they deliver several units of heat per unit of electricity. Loft rooms, garden offices and extensions are the places our Hoddesdon customers use them as the main heat source.
Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung, LG and Fujitsu. We pick the model after the heat gain survey, not before, because the right unit depends on the room, the pipe route and the noise limits, not on a brand preference.
Usually yes, and the 1960s and 1970s flats around the Tower Centre and Fawkon Walk are exactly where it gets asked for. The technical work is rarely the problem. Freeholder or management company consent for the outdoor unit is, and we supply the drawings and specifications that application needs.
A single split in a straightforward property is a day. A multi-split across several rooms is two to three days. Listed and conservation area properties take longer at the design and consent stage, not usually on the tools.
Call 01462 506374, or use the fixed price quote form, and we will survey the room, do the heat gain calculation properly and put the 0% VAT where the installation qualifies saving in writing.
