Running costs

How much will it cost to run?

Less than most people expect. A typical wall unit costs about 11p an hour to cool one room and about 17p an hour to heat it. Put in your own electricity rate and see what it would cost you.

Online in minutes, or a survey first

A single room in a house can be priced on screen straight away. A flat, a conservation area street or a listed building, which covers most of Islington, needs someone to look at the wall and the paperwork before a number is fixed.

Instant price

Room, size, where the outdoor unit could go, pick a unit, fixed figure on screen.

Survey first

Flats, listed buildings, conservation areas, several rooms. We check the wall, the lease and the council’s position, then fix the price.

AIR CONDITIONING IN ISLINGTON

Why the planning question comes before the price in Islington

Islington has 42 conservation areas and around 4,500 listed buildings, and the council’s own guidance is that equipment fixed to the outside of a home normally needs a full planning application. It prefers units that cannot be seen from the street. The national permitted development right for heat pump units, widened in May 2025, still does not allow a unit on a street facing wall in a conservation area and does not apply to a listed building at all.

So we start with where the outdoor unit can legally go: a rear wall, a rear garden, a lightwell or a set back flat roof. Then we size the system to the rooms that overheat. Then we quote, with the application included where one is needed.

The Islington rooms that overheat worst

Top floor flats in converted houses. Heat from three floors below and a roof above.

Loft conversions. The least thermal mass in the house and the most surface facing the sky.

South facing Georgian first floor rooms. Tall windows built for light, no shading.

Glazed rear extensions on the terraces off Upper Street and in Highbury.

Home offices in a box room with a closed door and a monitor.

Garden studios in the long Barnsbury and Canonbury gardens.

Shading and ventilation come before cooling in the London Plan, and in our survey. Where a blind or an extract fan would fix the room we say so and leave. Where it would not, a unit that heats in winter too is the right answer.

Outdoor units, up close

The first question in a conservation area is what the outside will look like. These are ours.

Islington air conditioning prices

Online, a single room prices from £2,420, two rooms from £4,310 and three from £6,150, fitted, with most homes paying 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Islington tends to add the council’s planning application, sometimes a scaffold on a tall terrace, a pipe run through a flat, or a bay suspension. The survey prices each of those as its own line and fixes the total, with the VAT position written on the quote.

Noise, neighbours and the kit we choose

In a terrace the outdoor unit is a few metres from someone’s bedroom window, so it is chosen for its sound rating, mounted on anti vibration feet and positioned so it is not facing a window. Fujitsu and Panasonic wall mounted and multi split systems for most homes, and every unit is an air to air heat pump so it heats in winter too.

Refrigerant can only be handled by an F-Gas certified engineer working for a registered firm, which is us, REFCOM REF1024550. Each system is pressure tested, pulled to vacuum and commissioned the way the manufacturer specifies, which is what keeps the warranty valid.

Why choose Vantage

Because in a borough with 42 conservation areas the planning application is half the job, and we do that half too. Our own F-Gas engineers under REFCOM REF1024550, a quote fixed with the VAT position written on it, the permit and the paperwork priced in, and a year on our workmanship over the manufacturer warranty. Company number 13248357, VAT number 392 8946 37.

Frequently asked questions

Very often, yes. Islington’s own guidance says that equipment fixed to the outside of a property normally needs a full planning application, the council prefers units that cannot be seen from the street, and on a listed building you need listed building consent as well. The national permitted development right for heat pump units does not allow a unit on a street facing wall in a conservation area, and does not apply to listed buildings at all. We tell you where your home stands at survey and prepare the application where one is needed.

HMRC Notice 708/6 treats an air to air heat pump fitted in a home as an energy saving material, zero rated until 31 March 2027 and due to go to 5% after. Commercial premises pay 20%. Your quote says which applies.

From £2,420 for one room, £4,310 for two and £6,150 for three, fitted, on our online quote. Islington adds a planning application more often than not, and sometimes a scaffold or a pipe run through a flat. The survey folds all of it into one fixed figure.

Rear elevation, rear garden, a lightwell with the airflow planned, or a set back flat roof. Not on the front. The unit is chosen for its sound rating and mounted on anti vibration feet, because the neighbours are three metres away.

Usually, with the freeholder’s or managing agent’s written agreement for the outdoor unit and the pipe run, plus whatever the council requires. We handle the paperwork together with the survey so the timeline is honest.

Yes. Every unit we fit is an air to air heat pump. A top floor flat or a loft office can run on it all year, and in the shoulder months it is usually cheaper per unit of heat than a plug in electric heater.

Yes. Ours, F-Gas certified, working for a company registered with REFCOM under REF1024550, which is what the law asks of anyone opening a refrigerant circuit. Twelve months on the workmanship, and the manufacturer’s warranty on the equipment.

Have us look at the room

01462 506 374, or send the details. We size the system, work out where the outdoor unit can legally sit, sort the application if one is needed, and fix the price with the VAT written on it.
