Glazed extensions. A big glazed rear extension gains heat faster than opening the doors can shed it. A concealed or wall mounted unit turns the most expensive room in the house back into a usable one.
These units heat as well as cool
This is the part people miss. Modern split air conditioning is an air to air heat pump. Run in reverse it heats, and it does so very efficiently, delivering several units of heat for each unit of electricity it draws.
In Langford that has a practical edge. The village straggles nearly two miles along the B659, and there are older cottages and outlying properties where extending the wet central heating to a loft room, a garden office or a converted outbuilding is awkward or plain uneconomic. Cavity walls and simpler routes, though anything near the river side of the village sits on floodplain soils with naturally high groundwater, so ground mounted outdoor units go on a proper raised base, not on paving slabs laid on damp ground.
Wilmon Court and Ivel Close, 1980s. Straightforward construction and usually quick installs. The driver here tends to be a hot main bedroom or a home office.
Garfield, Rowley Fields, Merryweather Grove and Steamer Croft. The 2010s stock. Airtight, well insulated, and the fastest installs we do in the village. Steamer Croft sits near the East Coast Main Line on the eastern edge of the parish, and being able to sleep with the windows shut in summer is exactly the sort of problem a quiet split system solves.
