Two ways to get your air conditioning price
Most single rooms can be priced online in a couple of minutes. Bigger or awkward jobs are better surveyed. Either way the price is fixed in writing before we start.

For several rooms, long pipe runs, flats and conservation areas. We look at the room and the wall, then put a fixed price in writing.
How much will it cost to run?
Less than most people expect. A typical wall unit costs about 11p an hour to cool one room and about 17p an hour to heat it. Put in your own electricity rate and see what it would cost you.
AIR CONDITIONING IN LUTON
The process
What an air conditioning installation in Luton actually involves
A single wall mounted split system is usually one day. An indoor unit goes on the wall of the room you want cooled, an outdoor condenser goes outside, and the two are joined by a pair of insulated refrigerant pipes, a power cable and a condensate drain. We core a hole through the wall, run the pipework in the shortest sensible route, pressure test it, vacuum it down, release the refrigerant charge and commission the system with you standing there.
A multi-split serving three or four rooms is two days in most Luton houses, sometimes three where the pipe runs have to cross the building.
The problem
Why Luton houses overheat, and which rooms do it worst
Loft conversions. The least thermal mass in the house and the most surface area facing the sky.
South and west facing bedrooms. Comfortable all winter, unusable for six weeks of the year.
Glazed rear extensions. Built to bring light in, and did the job rather too well.
Home offices. A small room, a person, two monitors and a closed door is a heat gain problem an open window cannot solve once outside is warmer than inside.
Local
The airport, and why opening a window is not the answer here
Luton has a working international airport inside the built up area. For a great many houses the practical consequence in summer is that the windows stay shut at night, because the alternative is aircraft noise in the bedroom.
Where people keep windows closed, the heat that went into the fabric during the day has nowhere to go, and the room is still warm at two in the morning. It is the single most common reason Luton customers give us for finally getting a quote.
VAT
0% VAT on residential air conditioning, until March 2027
Air conditioning installed in a home as a supply and install job qualifies for 0% VAT as an energy saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6. That relief runs to 31 March 2027.
It applies to residential supply and install. It is not a blanket 0% on every air conditioning job, and we will confirm on the quote whether your job qualifies rather than assuming it.

Planning
Where the outdoor unit goes, and what the planning rules say
This is the part of the job that decides whether an installation is simple or awkward. The outdoor unit needs air around it, a solid fixing, and a position where the noise it makes is not pointed at a bedroom window, yours or next door.
Permitted development
In England a domestic outdoor unit can often be fitted under permitted development, subject to limits on size, siting and proximity to boundaries. A flat, a listed building or a property in a conservation area is treated differently, and in those cases consent is usually needed. We check the position at survey and tell you if an application is likely.
Plaiters Lea and the conservation areas
Plaiters Lea in the town centre, the Hat District, is the best known of Luton’s conservation areas and sits on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register. A condenser on a principal elevation there is a planning conversation. A condenser at the rear, screened and off the street frontage, usually is not.
Our work
What it looks like, outside and in
The question we are asked most is what it will look like on the outside of the house. These are our own installs: the outdoor unit on a proper bracket, the pipework in black trunking run square to the brickwork, and a quiet wall unit inside. Click any photo to see it full size.
Options
One room, or the whole house
Most Luton jobs start as one room and the honest answer is that one room is often right. A single split in the loft bedroom or the home office solves the problem that stops you sleeping or working, for a fraction of the cost of a whole house system.
A multi-split makes sense when three or more rooms genuinely need it, because one outdoor unit can serve several indoor heads. If two rooms need cooling we will quote two rooms.
It heats as well as cools. Every system we fit is a reversible air to air heat pump. In a loft conversion or a garden room it will often heat the space faster and more cheaply than extending the wet heating into it. It does not replace a gas boiler for the whole house, and we will not pretend it does.
Worth knowing
Condensate, and where the water actually goes
A cooling system pulls moisture out of the air and that water has to go somewhere. Done properly it runs away under gravity to a suitable drain. Done badly it ends up in a pump nobody told you about, which will eventually fail and drip down an inside wall. Because we are plumbers as well as air conditioning engineers, the drain is not an afterthought on our jobs.
F-Gas
F-Gas, and why it matters who installs it
Refrigerant handling is regulated work, and an installer moving refrigerant needs to be F-Gas certificated. A system badly evacuated, overcharged or left with moisture in the circuit runs inefficiently, ices up and fails early. Vantage is F-Gas certified through Refcom, registration REF1024550.
Prices
What air conditioning costs in Luton
It depends on the number of rooms, the pipe run, the outdoor unit position and whether access equipment is needed. A single wall mounted split in a straightforward room is the cheapest thing we do in this trade, and our instant online quote prices it in a couple of minutes.
As our instant quote prices it today: a single room from £2,420, two rooms from £4,310 and three rooms from £6,150, supplied and fitted, with 0% VAT on most residential installs so there is nothing to add. Long pipe runs, a high wall or a run back to the consumer unit add to that, and the survey confirms it.
You get a fixed price in writing before we start, with the 0% VAT position stated on it. Repairs are £150 + VAT for the first hour (£180 including VAT). An annual service is a fixed £119 + VAT (£142.80 including VAT) for the first indoor unit and its outdoor unit, plus £60 + VAT (£72 including VAT) for each additional indoor unit. Every rate is on our prices page.
Servicing
Servicing an air conditioning system in Luton
A split system wants an annual check: filters cleaned, coils cleaned, drain checked, refrigerant pressures read and recorded, electrical connections checked. A system that has never been serviced loses output quietly, and most people put it down to a hot summer rather than a dirty coil. We service systems we did not install as well as our own.
Comfort
Cool bedrooms, even with the windows shut
Quiet wall mounted units, neat pipework, and a condensate that runs away properly. Installed and commissioned by our own F-Gas certified engineers.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to get planning permission for air conditioning in Luton?
Often not. A domestic outdoor unit can frequently be fitted under permitted development, subject to limits on size, siting and distance from boundaries. Flats, listed buildings and properties in a conservation area such as Plaiters Lea are treated differently and usually need consent. We check the elevation at survey and tell you before quoting.
How long does an air conditioning installation take?
A single wall mounted split in a straightforward room is normally one day. A multi-split serving three or four rooms is two days in most Luton houses, occasionally three.
Is air conditioning really 0% VAT?
For residential supply and install it qualifies as an energy saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, and that relief runs to 31 March 2027. It is not a blanket 0% on every job. We state the position on your quote.
Will it heat the room in winter as well?
Yes. Everything we fit is a reversible air to air heat pump, so it heats as well as cools. In heating mode a modern unit delivers around three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity.
How much does air conditioning cost to install in Luton?
As our instant online quote prices it today, a single room starts from £2,420 supplied and fitted, two rooms from £4,310 and three rooms from £6,150. Long pipe runs, a high wall position or a run back to the consumer unit add to that. You get a fixed price in writing before we start, and most residential installs currently qualify for 0% VAT.
How much does air conditioning cost to run?
Less than most people expect. A typical single-room unit draws around 0.5 to 1 kW while running, and in heating mode it is usually cheaper per unit of heat than a plug-in electric heater. Clean filters and an annual service keep it at that level.
How noisy is the outdoor unit?
Quieter than most people expect, but not silent, which is why position matters. We will not fit a condenser directly under a bedroom window, yours or a neighbour’s, if there is a sensible alternative.
Do you service systems you did not install?
Yes. Filters, coils, drain, refrigerant pressures and electrical connections, checked and recorded annually.
Are you F-Gas registered?
Yes. Vantage is F-Gas certified through Refcom, registration REF1024550, which is a legal requirement for anyone installing or working on air conditioning refrigerant circuits.
