Less than most people expect. A typical wall unit costs about 11p an hour to cool one room and about 17p an hour to heat it. Put in your own electricity rate and see what it would cost you.
Most single rooms can be priced online in a couple of minutes. Flats, listed buildings, conservation areas and whole house systems are better surveyed. Either way the price is fixed in writing before we start.
Tell us the room, its size and where the outdoor unit could go, choose a unit, and see your fixed price on screen.
For several rooms, flats, conservation areas and listed buildings. We look at the room and the wall, check the planning position, then put a fixed price in writing.
AIR CONDITIONING IN NORTH LONDON
The UK passed 40°C for the first time on 19 July 2022, and the capital sits in an urban heat island the Greater London Authority has mapped street by street. A top floor conversion in Islington, a south facing Victorian bay in Crouch End or a glass rear extension in Finchley can be unusable for six weeks of the summer.
A single wall mounted split is usually one day. The indoor unit goes on the wall of the room, the outdoor condenser goes outside, and the two are joined by insulated refrigerant pipes, a power cable and a condensate drain. We pressure test, vacuum down, charge and commission it with you standing there. A multi split for three or four rooms is two days in most north London houses.
In north London the planning position decides the design, so we work it out before we quote.
Conservation areas and Article 4 streets
Camden has 40 conservation areas covering about half the borough and has removed permitted development rights in Hampstead, Belsize, Primrose Hill, Dartmouth Park, South Hampstead, Redington and Frognal, Fitzjohns Netherhall and South Hill Park. Islington has 42. In any conservation area the permitted development right for a heat pump unit does not allow it on a wall or roof facing the street, so it goes to the rear, into a lightwell or onto a set back flat roof, and where a full application is needed we prepare it.
Listed buildings
There is no permitted development right at all on a listed building or within its grounds, so an outdoor unit needs planning permission and listed building consent. Islington alone has around 4,500 listed buildings and Camden nearly 2,000 entries on the heritage list. It is done every week, but it is planned, not bolted on.
Flats and mansion blocks
Most homes in Camden and Islington are flats. The lease usually needs the freeholder or the managing agent to agree to anything on the outside, the condensate has to drain somewhere sensible, and the pipe run between the indoor and outdoor units has to cross the building without wrecking a corridor. We survey the route and the paperwork together.
Noise, because the neighbours are close
Camden asks for a noise assessment for any new plant, measured against 24 hours of background noise, and its Local Plan is explicit that quiet streets get less tolerance. We choose units for their sound rating, mount them on anti vibration feet, and where a report is needed we arrange it.
Loft conversions. The least thermal mass in the house and the most surface area facing the sky.
South and west facing bedrooms. Comfortable all winter, unusable for six weeks of the year.
Glazed rear extensions. Built to bring light in, and did the job rather too well.
Top floor flats in converted houses. Heat from three floors below and a roof above.
Home offices. A laptop, a monitor and a closed door in a small room.
Garden rooms and studios. Timber, glass and no thermal mass at all.
The London Plan asks designers to reduce heat gain and use ventilation before turning to active cooling, and we agree with the order. If external blinds or a decent extract would solve your room we will say so. Where they will not, air conditioning is the honest answer, and it heats the room in winter too.
As our instant quote prices it today: a single room from £2,420, two rooms from £4,310 and three rooms from £6,150, supplied and fitted, with 0% VAT on most residential installs until 31 March 2027. A planning application, a scaffold, a long pipe run or a ducted system add to that and the survey puts an exact fixed price in writing, with the VAT position stated on it. Repairs are £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) for the first hour. An annual service is a fixed £119 + VAT (£142.80 including VAT) for the first indoor unit and its outdoor unit, plus £60 + VAT (£72 including VAT) for each additional indoor unit.
Fujitsu and Panasonic wall mounted and multi split systems for most homes, with a ducted option for the larger detached houses where you do not want a unit on every wall. Every unit is an air to air heat pump, so it heats in winter as well as cools in summer.
Handling refrigerant legally needs an F-Gas certified engineer, and the company has to be registered. Ours are, REFCOM REF1024550, and the installation is pressure tested, vacuumed and commissioned to the manufacturer’s procedure so the warranty holds.

For a residential supply and install it qualifies as an energy saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, zero rated until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is due to go to 5%. The 0% position is stated on your quote. Business premises pay 20%.
It depends on the building. Permitted development for heat pump units was widened in May 2025 and now covers air to air units that cool, up to 1.5 cubic metres and two units per house, but that right does not apply on a listed building, and in a conservation area the unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing the street. Camden has removed permitted development rights altogether in Hampstead, Belsize, Primrose Hill, Dartmouth Park and four other areas, and Islington’s own guidance says most plant fixed to the outside of a building needs a full application. We tell you where you stand at survey and we can prepare the drawings and the noise assessment the council wants.
As our instant quote prices it today, a single room starts from £2,420 supplied and fitted, two rooms from £4,310 and three rooms from £6,150, with 0% VAT on most residential installs. Long pipe runs, a high outdoor unit, a scaffold or a planning application add to that, and the survey puts an exact fixed price in writing.
On a rear or side wall, on a flat roof set back from the edge, in a lightwell with the airflow planned, or on the ground in a rear garden. In a flat the lease usually needs the freeholder to agree to anything fixed to the outside, and the quieter the street the more the council cares about the noise, so we put the unit where it is legal first and invisible second.
A multi split runs several indoor units off one outdoor unit, which is the usual answer for three or four rooms in a terrace or a semi. For a big detached house in Totteridge or Hampstead a ducted system hidden in the loft or the ceiling void keeps the walls clean. We design it to the rooms that actually overheat rather than to the whole floor plan.
Yes. Every unit we fit is an air to air heat pump, which is why it qualifies for the VAT relief. In the shoulder months it is usually cheaper per unit of heat than a plug in electric heater, so a loft office or a garden room can run on it all year.
Our own engineers, REFCOM registered under REF1024550 and F-Gas certified, which the law requires for anyone handling refrigerant. Twelve months on our workmanship plus the manufacturer warranty on the equipment.
