What goes wrong with tiling, and why
Almost every tiling failure traces back to what is underneath rather than the tiles themselves. Boards that flex, a substrate that was not primed, adhesive spread too thin, or no allowance for movement where the floor meets the wall. Tiles crack and grout lines open up months later, and by then the cause is buried.
That is why we spend time on preparation that you will never see once the job is finished. It is also why we will sometimes tell you a floor needs overboarding before anything goes down.
Wet rooms and tanking
A wet room is only as good as the waterproofing beneath it. Tanking is the membrane that stops water reaching the substrate, and it has to be continuous, taken up the walls to the right height, and properly sealed at every corner and pipe penetration.
Tile adhesive and grout are not waterproof on their own. Anyone who skips tanking in a wet room is leaving you a problem that will not show for a year or two and will be expensive when it does.
Choosing tiles, honestly
- Porcelain is dense, hard-wearing and low maintenance. It is the sensible default for most bathroom floors.
- Ceramic is lighter and cheaper, and fine on walls, but less suited to heavy floor use.
- Natural stone looks superb and needs sealing, resealing and more care. Worth it if you want it, but go in knowing that.
- Large format tiles need a flatter substrate than small ones. On an uneven floor they will either lip or need levelling first.

You can supply your own tiles or we can supply them. If you are buying your own, order more than the room measurement suggests, because cuts, breakages and the risk of a different batch shade later are all real. We will tell you roughly how much extra before you order.
How long a room takes
Preparation, tiling and grouting are separate stages with drying time between them, so a tiled bathroom is not a one-day job if it is done properly. We will give you the realistic sequence before starting rather than an optimistic one.
