An F1 fault code on an Ideal boiler means the system water pressure has dropped too low and the boiler has shut down to protect itself.

Like the Vaillant F22, this is usually fixable yourself in a few minutes by repressurising the system.

How to fix an Ideal F1

Check the pressure gauge. It should read 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is cold. If it is near zero:

1. Turn the boiler off and let it cool.
2. Locate the filling loop beneath the boiler.
3. Open both valves slowly until the gauge reads 1.5 bar.
4. Close both valves.
5. Turn the boiler on and press reset.

If F1 keeps coming back

You have a leak. A sealed system holds pressure for months. Common culprits are radiator valves, the pressure relief valve discharging outside, buried pipework, or a failed expansion vessel.

Which Ideal boilers show F1

Ideal Logic, Vogue, Independent and several other current ranges use F1 for low pressure. Older Ideal models may display it differently, so check your manual if yours does not match.

What an engineer will do if F1 keeps returning

The same logic as any repeated pressure loss. The heating circuit is isolated and pressure-tested, which separates a leak in the system from a fault inside the appliance.

Inside the boiler, the expansion vessel is the usual cause. When it loses its air charge, the pressure relief valve lifts every time the system heats up and discharges through the pipe outside. Recharging or replacing the vessel is a repair, not a replacement boiler.

Stopping it coming back

• Check the external discharge pipe near the boiler for drips or staining.
• Check radiator valves for weeping, staining or crusty deposits.
• Record the date each time you repressurise. Twice a year is normal; monthly is a leak.
• Do not fill above 1.5 bar cold, or the relief valve will discharge once the system heats.
