Is an Ideal F2 fault dangerous?

Taking the question directly, because it is the one most people are actually asking.

A boiler that locks out on F2 has shut the gas off itself. That is the appliance doing exactly what it is designed to do, and in that sense F2 is safer than a boiler that keeps trying. What is not safe is repeatedly resetting an appliance that will not hold a flame, because each attempt sends gas to a burner that may not light.

Ideal publishes a separate code, L5, for a boiler that has been reset too many times in 15 minutes. The manufacturer treats excessive resetting as a fault in its own right, which tells you how it should be treated.

What causes an F2 on an Ideal boiler

Some of it you can check yourself. Most of it is engineer work:

• No gas reaching the boiler, supply issue, empty prepayment meter, or a closed isolation valve
• Frozen condensate pipe in cold weather, which is common and often fixable without an engineer
• Worn or dirty ignition electrodes, the most common wear-related cause
• Dirty or failing flame sensing electrode, so the flame lights but is not detected
• Gas valve fault
• Restricted flue or a printed circuit board fault, both diagnosed later in the process

What you can safely check

1. Do your other gas appliances work? If the hob will not light, it is the supply.
2. Is the gas isolation valve near the boiler fully open?
3. Does the pressure gauge read between 1 and 1.5 bar with the heating off?
4. Is the condensate pipe frozen? Thaw it with warm, never boiling, water.
5. Reset once, or at most twice.

If that has not cleared it, stop there. Everything remaining is Gas Safe registered work by law, and not because of a technicality: it involves the gas carrying components of a live appliance.
