Ideal F3 Fault Code Explained

Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire

Fully Stocked Vans2 Year Labour GuaranteeGas Safe Registered 956889

An F3 fault on an Ideal boiler indicates a problem with the fan or the signal the boiler receives from it.

The fan forms part of the flue safety system, so the boiler will not run without a confirmed fan speed.

What F3 actually means

The fan clears combustion products through the flue and draws in air for combustion. The boiler monitors its speed and locks out if that is wrong or missing.

What you can safely check yourself

Nothing on this one. There is no homeowner check that helps with F3, and the components involved are inside the appliance. This needs a Gas Safe engineer.

When to stop, and why

What causes it beyond the simple checks

A failed fan motor, worn bearings, a wiring or connector fault, a blocked or restricted flue, or a PCB output fault.

In Ideal’s own words

Ideal Heating publishes F3 as “Fan Fault”. The fan is part of the flue safety system, so the boiler will not run without a confirmed fan speed. This is not a code to keep resetting.
