L1 on an Ideal boiler is a flow temperature overheat lockout. The water leaving the boiler got hotter than it should have, so the appliance shut down.

This is a circulation problem far more often than it is a boiler problem. Resetting it without fixing the flow just gets you the same lockout on the next cycle.

What L1 actually means

The boiler measures the temperature of the water leaving the heat exchanger. If that climbs past the safe limit it locks out rather than continue heating.

The manufacturer’s own fault finding chart starts by asking whether the system is filled and all isolation and radiator valves are open, then whether the difference between flow and return is more than 30°C. Both of those are about whether water is moving properly.

What you can safely check yourself

Check the pressure gauge is in the normal range, roughly 1 to 1.5 bar cold.

Check that radiator valves and any isolation valves have not been left closed. This catches people out after decorating or after other work has been done.

If the system has recently been drained or topped up, air in the system will do exactly this, and bleeding the radiators may clear it.

What causes it beyond the simple checks

A pump that is not rotating freely or has failed, sludge or scale restricting flow through the heat exchanger, air locked circulation, or a return thermistor reading incorrectly. The manufacturer’s chart has the engineer check pump rotation and then test the return thermistor resistance against known values before condemning anything.

Is L1 dangerous?

The lockout is the boiler protecting itself, which is the safe outcome. The underlying cause still needs finding.

Will a power flush fix L1?

If restricted flow from sludge is the cause, often yes. If the pump has failed or a thermistor is faulty, flushing will not help, so it is worth diagnosing before spending.

Why does it come back after a reset?

Because the reset clears the lockout, not the reason the boiler overheated.
