Ideal L2 Fault Code Explained
Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire
An L2 fault code on an Ideal boiler means it has locked out because of a problem with the flame. Ideal Heating publishes L2 as “Flame Loss or Ignition Lockout”, that is the manufacturer’s own wording, and it covers both a boiler that never lit and one that lit and then lost the flame.
This code appears most often on the Ideal Logic, Logic Max and Logic+ ranges. A few free checks clear it more often than people expect.
Ideal publishes the same description for L2 and F2. If your boiler is showing F2 rather than L2, see our Ideal F2 fault code page.
What to check before you call anyone
- Check your other gas appliances. If the hob will not light either, the gas supply is the problem, not the boiler. Check prepayment meter credit if you have one.
- Check the gas isolation valve near the boiler is fully open. The lever should run in line with the pipe, not across it.
- Check the pressure gauge. It should read between 1 and 1.5 bar with the heating off.
- Check the condensate pipe if it is cold outside. A frozen condensate pipe locks Ideal boilers out and thaws easily with warm water.
- Reset the boiler. Hold the reset button as your manual directs and let it attempt ignition.
Two or three resets, then stop
Do not sit and reset repeatedly. Ideal publishes a separate code, L5, for a boiler that has been reset too many times in 15 minutes, which tells you the manufacturer treats it as a problem in its own right.
Why an Ideal Logic shows L2
Once the free checks are done, the causes that remain are engineer work:
- Ignition electrodes worn, dirty or out of position, a common wear item and a straightforward fix
- Flame sensing electrode dirty or failing, so the boiler lights but cannot confirm it
- Gas valve not opening correctly or not delivering the right rate
- Blocked or restricted flue, which stops the burner running cleanly
- Printed circuit board fault, which is less common and usually diagnosed last
If it keeps coming back
An L2 that clears on reset and returns days later is telling you something is degrading rather than broken. Electrodes are the usual answer, and replacing them is a modest job. Leaving it means the lockouts get closer together until the boiler stops clearing at all, usually on the coldest night of the year.

Frequently asked questions
What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?
Ideal Heating publishes L2 as “Flame Loss or Ignition Lockout”. The boiler has locked out because of a flame problem, either it did not light, or it lit and then lost the flame.
What is the difference between L2 and F2 on an Ideal boiler?
Ideal publishes essentially the same description for both: L2 as “Flame Loss or Ignition Lockout” and F2 as “Flame Loss / Ignition Lockout”. Which code your boiler displays depends on the appliance and its generation rather than on a different underlying fault.
How do I reset an Ideal Logic showing L2?
Hold the reset button as your manual directs and let the boiler attempt ignition. Two or three attempts at most. Ideal publishes a separate code, L5, for a boiler reset too many times in 15 minutes.
Why does my Ideal boiler keep showing L2?
A recurring L2 usually means something is degrading rather than failed, worn ignition electrodes are the most common cause. It is worth fixing before the lockouts become permanent.
Is an Ideal L2 fault dangerous?
Can I fix an L2 myself?
You can do the free checks, gas supply, isolation valve, pressure, condensate pipe, and a reset. Anything involving electrodes, the gas valve or the flue is Gas Safe registered work by law.
