Vaillant F83 Fault Code Explained

An F83 fault on a Vaillant boiler is recorded by Vaillant as a dry fire fault. When the burner fired, the boiler did not see the temperature change it expects, which is the signature of firing with too little water moving through the heat exchanger.
It usually points to low water content, trapped air, or poor circulation. It is the boiler protecting the heat exchanger from running effectively dry.
What F83 actually means
The boiler measures the temperature of the water going out and coming back. When it fires, it expects to see those readings move. If they stay flat, it concludes there is not enough water moving through the heat exchanger, which is what Vaillant calls a dry fire condition, and it shuts down before damage occurs.
What you can safely check yourself
Check the pressure gauge. It should read 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is cold. If it is low, repressurise using the filling loop, and bleed your radiators if any are cold at the top.
If the pressure is correct and the fault stays, stop there.
When to stop, and why
If the pressure is correct, the radiators are bled and the fault persists, stop. The remaining causes are a failed pump, a blocked heat exchanger or a faulty sensor, and none of those are homeowner work.
What causes it beyond the simple checks
Low system pressure, trapped air, a failed or weak pump, sludge restricting the heat exchanger, or a failed flow or return thermistor. Sludge is common enough that a power flush is often part of the answer.

Vaillant’s installation and maintenance instructions give F.83 as a dry fire fault.
That is the manufacturer’s own term for it, and it is a blunt one for a reason. The boiler has fired with too little water around the heat exchanger. Do not keep resetting it.
