Of the 71 listed buildings in the conservation area, a quarter date from the 17th century and another quarter from the 18th, with a handful from the 15th century or earlier. Gilbey built very little himself, so most of what is there is Edwardian and inter-war detached houses in their own grounds along Crescent Road, Avenue Road, Pine Grove, Thorn Grove, Gilbey Avenue and Warwick Road. Big houses, often with several bathrooms, and the usual finding is a combi that was never sized for the place.
Newtown. The Victorian expansion south and west of the old centre. Terraces where the boiler has usually ended up in a rear kitchen or a lean to, with a long condensate run out to a gully.
