The water in Cheshunt, and who actually supplies it
Start with a correction, because it catches out plenty of people including some tradesmen. Most of Hertfordshire is on Affinity Water. Cheshunt is not. Cheshunt is on Thames Water, for both water and sewerage. Hertfordshire County Council’s surface water management plan for the Borough of Broxbourne names Thames Water as the water company for the borough, and the Thames Water hosepipe restrictions covered Cheshunt and Broxbourne.
We are not going to publish a precise hardness figure in mg/l for Cheshunt, because Thames Water does not publish one per town in a form we can stand behind. What they do publish is their classification bands: soft up to 100 mg/l of calcium carbonate, slightly hard to 150, moderately hard to 200, hard from 200 to 300 and very hard above 300. And they state plainly that all the water in their region is hard, because it passes through chalky limestone geology on the way to you.
That is enough to work with. Hard water scales the plate heat exchanger inside a combi, furs up the coil in a cylinder, seizes shower valves and blocks spray heads. On a boiler you notice it as hot water that runs hot then cools off, or a boiler that kettles and bangs when the hot tap goes on.
So an inline scale reducer on the mains before the boiler is standard on installs across EN7 and EN8. It costs very little at the time of the fit and it protects the most expensive component in the appliance.

Worth a mention while we are on water: the New River, built between 1608 and 1613, runs through the town. Churchgate. The ancient core, around St Mary’s Church near Ermine Street, before the town shifted east to the High Street and Turners Hill. The Churchgate conservation area was designated in 1968, which makes it one of the earliest in the country, and it contains 23 listed buildings. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin is Grade I and dates from 1418 to 1448, the Old Parsonage of 1500 is the oldest building in the area, and Dewhurst School goes back to 1640. College Road, formerly Water Lane, is the spine of it. In an area like this the flue terminal and the external condensate route are the whole conversation. Where a property is listed or inside the conservation area, that can need consent from Broxbourne Borough Council, and we survey it properly instead of guessing off a photograph.
The post war estates. Council estate expansion after the Second World War, some of it on land bought by London boroughs for overspill housing, gives Cheshunt a substantial 1940s to 1960s layer.
