The same aggregator reports the nearby Stevenage supply area at 320 mg/l, which is very hard. Either way, this is not soft water.
In a combi, the plate heat exchanger takes the beating. Scale forms on the hot water side first, the flow rate at the tap drops off, and eventually you get the banging people describe as the boiler sounding like a kettle. That is not a bad boiler, it is the water.
So every combi we install in Codicote gets a scale reducer on the incoming mains as standard. It is a modest part fitted at the point where the pipework is already open, and it costs a fraction of a heat exchanger replacement five years down the line.

There is a designated Conservation Area covering the historic village centre, and there are listed buildings in the middle of it, including the church itself and Grade II listed pubs at The Goat and the Robin Hood and Little John. If your property is listed or sits in that Conservation Area, the boiler is rarely the problem. The flue is. A terminal position that nobody would look at twice on a modern estate can need consent from North Hertfordshire District Council on a historic frontage. We survey on site and tell you before you commit.
Tower Road, the early to mid twentieth century council houses known locally as White City. Straightforward layouts, and generally easy enough to work in. Where we find a system that has never been properly cleaned, we quote a full system clean alongside the boiler.
The St Albans Road bungalows. Early to mid twentieth century single storey properties, and bungalows change the job. There is no first floor to hide pipework in, so the loft is often the only route, and it is both the coldest part of the building and where people store things. Anything we run up there gets insulated for a hard winter. The other bungalow issue is flue termination: with everything at one level there is far less freedom about where a terminal can sit relative to windows, doors and the boundary. That is a survey job, not a phone quote.
The outlying hamlets: Nup End, Rabley Heath, Drivers End, Potters Heath and Hogsnorton. Scatters of individual properties rather than estates, with a mix of ages and no two jobs the same. Rabley Heath sits in the AL6 postcode district rather than SG4. If you are out this way and not on mains gas, say so when you enquire so we quote the right job from the start.
The new build sites. Four housing sites are allocated in the North Hertfordshire Local Plan adopted in November 2022, expected to deliver around 350 homes between them, including Site CD3 on land north of The Close. New does not mean immune: hard water still scales a new heat exchanger, and a developer’s specification is not always the boiler we would have chosen.
