Boiler Installation in Rickmansworth

BOILER INSTALLATION IN RICKMANSWORTH

Four in five Three Rivers homes heat with mains gas

In the 2021 Census, 81.4% of households in Three Rivers District relied on mains gas alone for heating. In the Rickmansworth Town ward the figure was 75.9%, with 10.7% on electric heating only. So a boiler replacement here is usually a gas job, and what matters is everything around the boiler.

At survey we check that the gas pipe can carry the new boiler’s demand, measure the incoming mains to decide between a combi and a cylinder, test the existing system for sludge, and find a flue position that meets the clearances and the local rules. Gas Safe registered under 956889. You get up to 12 years of manufacturer cover depending on the boiler, and 12 months from us on our own workmanship.

Affinity Water, and it is hard

Building Regulations guidance asks for scale protection on a combi’s cold feed above 200 mg/l, and Affinity’s 2025 figure for this zone is about 283. A combi heats water through a narrow plate heat exchanger, which is the part that scales first. An inline scale reducer is on every Rickmansworth combi quote as standard.

Which boiler suits which Rickmansworth home

Flats and semis

Town centre flats, and the semis and terraces of Mill End and Croxley Green, mostly have one bathroom. A combi suits them: hot water from the mains, no tank in the loft, no cylinder in the cupboard. Where an older regular system is sound and the household prefers stored water, we can replace like for like.

Moor Park, Loudwater and the larger houses

Three quarters of the homes in Moor Park and Eastbury are detached, and the larger ones often have a family bathroom plus en suites. One combi cannot feed two showers properly. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder sized to the outlets can, and the mains flow test at survey tells us how large it needs to be.

Communal heating. In 2021, 51 households in the Rickmansworth Town ward were on district or communal heating. If your flat has no boiler of its own, the fix sits with the building’s system, and we will say so rather than quote for a boiler you cannot have.

Flues on protected streets and private estates

A boiler indoors is rarely a planning question. The flue terminal on the outside can be. In the town centre conservation area, Three Rivers policy DM3 allows development only where it “preserves or enhances” the area’s character, so we keep terminals off the street front.

On the Moor Park estate, the company’s consent covers any work that alters the outside of a house, and building work may not begin until written consent is in place. In Loudwater an Article 4 direction removes permitted development rights from certain houses for roof alterations, so a vertical flue there is checked first. Some Loudwater houses are thatched in Norfolk reed, and a flue near thatch is positioned with extra care. Each of these is settled before the quote is final.

Low ground and high groundwater

The council’s 2026 flood risk assessment puts Rickmansworth among the settlements at highest risk of groundwater flooding, with river flood risk along the Colne valley through Rickmansworth and Batchworth.

Height matters. On low-lying addresses we avoid placing a new boiler, its controls or its wiring centre at floor level in a basement or garage where water could reach it.

Condensate. Every condensing boiler produces acidic water. We run the drain inside wherever we can, and where it has to go outside it is upsized and insulated against freezing.

Cellars and utility rooms. If the boiler lives below ground level today, moving it up during the replacement is often worth the extra day.

Your insurer. If your home has flooded before, ask whether they have any conditions on where heating equipment sits.

From survey to sign off

1

Survey

Outlets counted, mains flow measured, gas supply traced, flue and condensate routes found, and the conservation area or estate rules for the address checked. Then a fixed written price.

2

Installation

Old boiler removed, system cleaned, new boiler, flue, filter and scale reducer fitted, inhibitor dosed, combustion tested with an analyser and the controls set up with you.

3

Paperwork

Manufacturer guarantee registered, Building Regulations compliance notified through Gas Safe, Benchmark checklist completed and left with the boiler.

Parking, skips and private roads. Where a job needs a bay held for the van, Three Rivers charges £35.50 per bay per day for a suspension, applied for at least 10 days ahead and not refundable. A skip on the road needs a Hertfordshire County Council licence, £54 for 14 days and £28 for each week after, and in a pay or permit street the parking office has to agree as well. On the Moor Park estate the roads belong to the estate company, so skips and materials stay off them and contractors’ vans park on the drive. Any fee lands on your quote as its own line.

Boiler installation prices in Rickmansworth

Boiler swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), fitted, including the system clean, magnetic filter, scale reducer, flue and guarantee registration. Bigger houses often add an unvented cylinder; older homes may need a tank fed system converted; a protected street may need a longer flue run to reach a side or rear wall. Each appears as its own line, and the total is fixed before we begin.

Why choose Vantage

Because the boiler is only part of the job. Gas Safe registered under 956889. Mains flow measured before we choose the boiler, water treated because Affinity’s supply here is hard, flue positions agreed before the drill comes out. Company number 13248357, VAT number 392 8946 37. Twelve months on our own workmanship, with the manufacturer’s warranty alongside.

Frequently asked questions

Boiler swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), fitted, with the system clean, magnetic filter, scale reducer, flue and guarantee registration included. A conversion from tanks, a new cylinder, a longer flue or a bay suspension is shown as a separate line, and the total is fixed before we start.

A like for like combi in the same position is usually one day. Moving the boiler, converting from a tank fed system or adding an unvented cylinder normally takes two. The quote gives the number of days.

If the work changes the outside of the house, for example a flue on a new wall, the company’s written consent is needed before work starts. We raise it at survey. Work on the estate also runs to its hours, 8.00am to 5.30pm on weekdays and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays.

It can scale one. Affinity Water’s 2025 report gives about 283 mg/l for its Rickmansworth/Gerrards Cross zone, well above the 200 mg/l at which Building Regulations guidance asks for scale protection on a combi. An inline scale reducer is part of every combi we fit here.

Where two or three bathrooms can be in use together, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder sized to the outlets usually serves better than a combi. We measure the mains flow at survey and recommend from the number.

Usually, yes. The flue route is the deciding factor in a flat, along with the lease and any freeholder consent. If the building has district or communal heating instead, that is a different system, and we will tell you so at survey.

An annual service is £99 + VAT (£118.80 including VAT). Keeping to the manufacturer’s service schedule is usually a condition of the longer warranty, so we remind you when it is due.
