Tell us what you have now, what the house is like and where the boiler sits, and we will come back with a number you can rely on. No survey theatre, no three hour sales visit, no pressure.
Vantage Plumbing and Heating is Gas Safe registered (reg. 956889) and works out of Stevenage, running up to Stotfold on the A507 and the A1(M) corridor through Baldock. Swaps start from £2,850, manufacturer guarantees run to twelve years on the right models, and our emergency line is answered by a person 365 days a year.
Stotfold has a Hitchin postal address and an SG5 postcode, so plenty of people assume it takes Hertfordshire water. It does not. Stotfold sits in Central Bedfordshire, and Anglian Water supplies it, for both mains water and sewerage. Affinity Water serves parts of Hertfordshire to the south and west, which is why this corner of the map confuses people, but on the Stotfold side of the boundary it is Anglian.
The hardness figure worth knowing is around 374 mg/l as calcium carbonate for the SG5 postcode district. That is a third party district level lookup rather than a reading taken at your kitchen tap in Stotfold, so treat it as an indication of the supply zone rather than gospel. Third party data compiled from Anglian Water figures puts the regional average at 321 ppm, ranging from 255 to 394 ppm across 261 postcode districts, which puts SG5 near the harder end of that spread. Either way, the water going into your boiler here is properly hard.
What that does to a combi is predictable. Calcium comes out of solution on the hottest surface it can find, the plate heat exchanger, every time you run a hot tap. Five or six years in, the shower goes hot then lukewarm and the boiler starts banging on ignition.
So on almost every Stotfold install we fit an inline scale reducer on the incoming main. It adds a modest amount at installation and it is a fraction of the cost of a heat exchanger swap later. It also matters for the paperwork: several manufacturers make their longer guarantee periods conditional on scale protection in hard water areas, and we would rather check that before we put a warranty length on your quote than let you discover it during a claim.
We are not a one badge outfit and we are not paid more to push a particular manufacturer. Across SG5 two ranges do most of the work.
Vaillant ecoTEC plus. Our default where hot water demand is high or the property is larger, which describes a lot of the newer detached stock in Stotfold. Reliable, sensible to service, and parts you can get hold of in the middle of winter rather than in nine working days.
Ideal Logic and Logic Max. The right answer for a straight combi swap in the older village stock and the three bedroom family houses. Good value, genuinely durable, and a strong guarantee when it is installed and serviced the way the manufacturer intends.
The bigger decision is not the badge, it is the type. A combi suits most three bedroom houses with one bathroom. Where there are two bathrooms plus an en suite and a family all wanting them between seven and eight, a system boiler with a properly sized unvented cylinder is the better machine. A regular boiler stays on the table where a vented setup works well and nobody wants the loft tanks ripped out.
Undersizing is the most common fault we are called out to correct, and it happens at quote stage rather than on site.
A like for like combi swap is a day. We arrive early, cover the floors and the route in, drain down, take the old appliance off the wall, fit and commission the new one, flush the system to the standard the manufacturer requires, fit a magnetic filter, and run you through the controls before we leave. You receive the Gas Safety Certificate and a properly completed Benchmark book, and we register the manufacturer guarantee for you rather than leaving it as a card to post off.
Two days is the honest answer where the job is a conversion. Taking a house off a vented system, tank in the loft and cylinder in the airing cupboard, and onto a combi means stripping the tanks out, capping the old feed and vent, upgrading the mains run so the combi actually gets the flow rate it needs, and making good afterwards. Same story if the boiler is moving position, because that means new gas, new condensate and a new flue penetration.
Condensate deserves a mention here. The Ivel runs through the middle of Stotfold, and an uninsulated condensate pipe run across an outside wall to a gully is exactly what freezes solid on the first proper frost and locks the boiler out at six in the morning. We route condensate internally wherever the building allows it, and where it has to go outside we use the correct diameter and lag it properly.
Stotfold is really two towns for our purposes, and the quote reflects which one you live in.
Stotfold Park, off Taylors Road. David Wilson Homes, built through the 2020s and now sold out. These houses arrived with modern condensing boilers already fitted, so the work here is rarely a swap. It is sizing complaints, poor commissioning left by the site fit out, cylinders never balanced properly, and filter and inhibitor omissions that the guarantee depends on.
Randall Fields, off Arlesey Road. A Cala Homes development, again recent, again mostly newer appliances. What we see is the second wave of problems on new estates: pressure loss nobody has traced, sticking diverter valves in a hard water area where no scale protection was fitted on handover, and homeowners who have never had the boiler serviced because it felt too new to bother.
Fairfield Park, adjoining the town. Built in the early 2000s on the former Fairfield Hospital site, around 900 dwellings plus roughly 100 apartments inside the converted hospital building. It became its own parish in 2013 but it is Stotfold’s near neighbour in every practical sense. Twenty odd year old boilers are exactly the age where replacement makes financial sense, and the converted hospital apartments are a different job again: flue routing through a large historic structure, communal considerations and pipework runs that were designed around the conversion rather than around the future engineer.
The old village core, Queen Street, Brook Street and around Stotfold Common. This is where the age is. Stotfold has 18 listed buildings, one of them Grade II star, the Church of St Mary the Virgin, with parts dating to around 1150 and a tower from around 1450. The rest are Grade II and include Stotfold Bury, The Grange, The Old Vicarage, The Chequers, Brook End, Coppice Mead Cottage, Huckleberry Cottage, 10 Queen Street, 38 Brook Street and 45 Rook Tree Lane.
There is a planning point here worth getting right. Stotfold has no designated conservation area of its own. The neighbouring hamlet of Astwick does have one. So for most Stotfold properties the usual permitted development rules for a flue apply. Where the constraint bites is listed building consent, which is a building by building question and has nothing to do with conservation area boundaries. If your house is one of the 18, we survey it and tell you honestly whether consent is likely before anything is booked, and Central Bedfordshire Council is the authority to deal with, not a Hertfordshire one.
Solid wall cottages generally. Old core properties often have thin original pipework and chimney breasts carrying old flues. Back boilers still turn up behind gas fires here. Removing one is a bigger job than it looks: the opening has to be dealt with, the chimney flue handled correctly, and the new appliance usually relocated to the kitchen with fresh pipework throughout.
A straight like for like combi swap in Stotfold starts from £2,850. It covers the boiler, installation, system flush, magnetic filter, scale reducer, flue, guarantee registration and VAT. Most swaps in the standard family housing land in that bracket.
A back boiler removal or a vented to combi conversion sits higher, because it is genuinely two days of work with more pipework and more making good. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder for a larger house at Stotfold Park or a four bedroom detached at Randall Fields is higher again, and we will tell you why rather than hiding it in a total.
You get a fixed price before we start, not a from price that grows once somebody is in your loft. If the survey turns up something that changes the job, you hear about it before the date is booked.
Servicing. An annual service keeps the manufacturer guarantee alive, and in water this hard it is also when we catch scaling while it is still a service item rather than a component failure. Landlords needing a CP12 gas safety certificate can have both done in the same visit.
Repairs. We work on all makes, not only what we fit. No heat and no hot water is the call we take most, and it clusters in the first genuinely cold week of the season every year. Our 24/7 cover is real, so a Sunday night breakdown gets a person on the phone.
Stotfold, Astwick, Arlesey, Fairfield, Henlow, Shillington, Gravenhurst, Holwell, Pirton, Ickleford, Letchworth Garden City, Baldock and Biggleswade. If your village is not on the list, ask, because it probably still is.

A like for like combi swap is normally one day. A vented to combi conversion, a back boiler removal or a boiler that is changing position is two.
In nearly every case, yes. The SG5 district figure of roughly 374 mg/l is very hard by any classification, and some extended manufacturer guarantees are conditional on scale protection being fitted in areas like this.
Anglian Water, for both supply and sewerage. The Hitchin postal address on your letters is a postal convention, not a clue about the utility. Stotfold is in Central Bedfordshire.
Get it serviced annually and get scale protection and inhibitor levels checked. New estate boilers in hard water fail early far more often than people expect, and the guarantee usually depends on the servicing record.
Stotfold has no conservation area of its own, so the usual permitted development rules generally apply. Listed building consent is the real question, and Stotfold has 18 listed buildings. We check the specific address before quoting.
Yes. It is a two day job done properly, including dealing with the fireplace opening and the flue in the chimney breast, and we price it as two days rather than pretending otherwise.
