HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
When an Ampthill boiler stops, our own Gas Safe engineers find the actual fault for a fixed fee, explain it in plain terms and price the repair before a single part goes in.

No heating: a pump, diverter valve, motorised valve or control fault
No hot water: on a combi, often scale or a sticking diverter
Pressure loss: a hidden weep, a relief valve letting by or a flat expansion vessel
Lockouts: ignition, flame sensing, fan or flue faults with a code
Kettling: rumbling or banging from scale or poor circulation
Frozen condensate: an ice plug in the outside pipe after a hard night
Noisy pumps: worn bearings or air trapped in the system
Whether the boiler hangs in a Georgian town centre house or a utility room on Ampthill Heights, most calls come down to one of those. Leaks from the boiler itself, from the case or a pipe connection below it, belong on the list too. Turn the boiler off, catch the water and ring.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
A boiler that runs again after a reset has not been repaired. It has been given another chance to fail. Repeated resets can also hide what the fault code was pointing to.
Our engineers read the history, measure what the boiler is doing and test the part suspected before replacing it. Fitting parts in hope is how bills grow without the fault going away, and we do not work that way.
A typical example is a combi that stops heating the radiators but still gives hot water. The cause might be the pump, the diverter valve, a thermostat or the wiring between them, and each has a different price. Ten minutes of testing saves you paying for the wrong one.
For a boiler fault in Ampthill you pay a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) for the Gas Safe diagnostic. That covers coming out, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, with up to one hour on site.
If you agree to the repair on the same visit, £70 of the diagnostic is taken off the repair. If a part has to be ordered, you keep the diagnosis and a written price and decide in your own time.
Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and then £75 + VAT per half hour, with the out of hours call-out on top, all confirmed before we set off. Every charge we make is listed on our pricing page.
Gas pressure at the boiler, how the flame lights and holds, and whether the fan and flue are clearing combustion gases as they should.
System pressure, the expansion vessel charge, the pump and the valves that divert water between heating and hot water.
The fused spur, programmer, thermostats and wiring, because a surprising number of “boiler” faults turn out to be a control that has stopped calling for heat.
Ampthill is usually listed in the Anglian Water supply area, and Anglian says water across its region is likely to be hard, drawn from chalk and limestone groundwater. We describe the town as hard rather than quote a number, because no supplier figure for this postcode was available to us.
Hard water leaves scale where it is heated. In a combi that is the plate heat exchanger feeding the taps, so the first sign is often a shower that drifts from hot to lukewarm. In the main heat exchanger scale causes kettling and, eventually, overheating lockouts.
Guidance under the Building Regulations puts the line at 200 mg/l: above that, the cold feed to a combi ought to be treated. Where yours has nothing fitted, the engineer will tell you after the repair whether a scale reducer would earn its keep.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
A few checks are safe for anyone. Look at the pressure gauge and top up through the filling loop if it has dropped below the level in your manual. Check the fused spur is on, the programmer is in a heating period and the room thermostat is turned up.
After a frost, pour warm, not boiling, water along the outside condensate pipe and reset the boiler once. That is where DIY ends. Anything inside the casing, or on the gas valve, burner or flue, is gas work that the law reserves for Gas Safe registered engineers.
We repair all makes and would rather keep a sound boiler running than sell a new one. A failed pump, fan or diverter on a boiler in otherwise good order is nearly always worth fixing.
The picture changes when the heat exchanger is badly scaled or corroded, parts for the model are hard to get, or the boiler keeps failing in different places. Then we set the repair cost beside the cost of replacement and leave the choice with you.
A replacement starts from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT). We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, also Worcester Bosch, remove the old boiler and register the warranty for you, with next day installation available on most standard swaps, subject to survey.
Anyone working on your boiler must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see the engineer’s ID card, check the photo, and look on the back for the appliance categories they hold.
Our engineers are directly employed by Vantage Plumbing and Heating Limited and work under our registration, 956889. They are not subcontractors sent from a list, and the vans carry the everyday parts.
Before leaving, the engineer runs the boiler through heating and hot water, checks the pressure has settled and shows you what was replaced and why. If the old part is worth seeing, you can see it.
The labour on the repair is covered by our 12 month guarantee. If anything else was noticed, such as a condensate pipe likely to freeze again or a boiler that is overdue a service, it is mentioned and priced separately so you can decide later.

Yes. Go ahead on the same visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair bill.
Scale on the plate heat exchanger is the usual reason in hard water, though a sticking diverter valve can do the same. The diagnostic tells us which.
Anglian Water says its region is likely to be hard, and Ampthill is generally described that way. We have no supplier figure for your street, so we look at the boiler itself.
For a short while, but the water is escaping somewhere. Finding the weep or faulty valve early stops damage to floors and to the boiler.
All the common makes. The boilers we install are mostly Vaillant and Ideal, with some Worcester Bosch, but repairs are not limited to those.
Not automatically. We show you the repair cost against a replacement from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT) and let you decide.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card and check the back covers boilers. Our registration number is 956889.

The fault code on the display, what the boiler was doing when it stopped and whether it has happened before. Those three details help the engineer arrive with the right parts.
