Baldock water measures 318 mg/l in Affinity Water’s own report, and scale is behind many of the breakdowns we find. We diagnose for a fixed fee and tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it.

Affinity Water’s own zone report for Baldock and Letchworth (AF001) gives 2025 total hardness of 318 mg/l as calcium carbonate, with calcium averaging 127 mg/l. Every sample came out at the same figure, which is a very hard supply.
The town sits over chalk, and the River Ivel rises from springs within it. When a boiler heats that water, the calcium comes out of solution and settles on the hottest metal it can find.
Building Regulations guidance says water above 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combination boiler. At 318, most Baldock combis without a scale reducer are working against the water every day.

Usually a pump, a motorised valve, a thermostat or the programmer. On older circuits, debris in the heating water can seize a pump that is otherwise sound.
On a combi, a diverter valve or a plate heat exchanger clogged with scale. Water that runs hot, then lukewarm, then hot again points strongly at scale.
Water is leaving the sealed system somewhere: a weeping radiator valve, the pressure relief valve, a flat expansion vessel or a leak inside the boiler.
Kettling is the rumble of water boiling in a scaled heat exchanger. Repeated lockouts can be ignition, flue or overheating. A boiler that gurgles and stops after a hard frost usually has a frozen condensate pipe.
Pressing reset clears the fault code without telling you why it appeared. A boiler that relights and locks out again two days later still has the problem.
Our engineers test the components involved before replacing anything, so you pay for the part that has actually failed. If sludge or scale caused it, you are told, because a new part in the same water tends to go the same way.
The Gas Safe diagnostic is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. That covers attending, diagnosing the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, with up to one hour on site.
Go ahead with the repair on that same visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair. If you would rather think about it, you are told what the fault is and can decide later.
Outside weekday hours, gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and then £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) out of hours call-out. You hear those figures on the phone first.
The engineer confirms the gas supply and pressure, reads the fault history where the boiler stores one, and checks flue, condensate and system pressure before looking at individual parts.
Only when the cause is clear do you get a repair price, covering the part and the labour. If something unexpected turns up once work starts, the engineer stops and prices it before carrying on.
A few things are safe for anyone and occasionally save a visit:
Is the thermostat set above the room temperature
Did the programmer lose its settings in a power cut
Does the pressure gauge read in the range the manual gives
Has the plastic condensate pipe outside frozen solid
Warm, not boiling, water poured along a frozen condensate pipe often frees it. Beyond that, stop. The casing, the gas valve and anything touching gas are for a Gas Safe engineer only, and you are entitled to see their Gas Safe ID card.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
In the conservation area, designated in 2003 and covering the High Street, Whitehorse Street, Hitchin Street, Church Street and Park Street, many boilers sit in houses that are listed. For a repair that normally means nothing more than care with floors, panelling and access.
It matters more if a repair would change a flue position or add external pipework. Those are discussed with you before any hole is drilled, because consent may be involved.
Homes on the Clothall Common estate, built in several phases, tend to have standard modern systems with the boiler in a kitchen or utility cupboard. Access is easy, and a fault there is often traced quickly.
The same hard water reaches them, though, and a combi fitted without a scale reducer will show it in time. Where the Growing Baldock sites are eventually built, the same advice will apply to those boilers from their first year.
We repair all makes, and most faults are worth fixing. A failed fan or diverter valve on a boiler with a sound heat exchanger usually leaves plenty of life.
When the heat exchanger has failed, parts are no longer made or the bill would be a large share of a new boiler, we say so and give you both figures. Replacement swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with next day installation on most standard replacements, subject to survey.
The old boiler is taken away and the warranty is registered for you, with up to 12 years of manufacturer guarantee on selected models. Boiler installation in Baldock explains the options.
Our repairs carry a 12 month labour guarantee. The engineer explains what failed, what was replaced and anything else they noticed that is worth watching.
If the annual service is due, it can be added while the engineer is with you for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes. Details are on boiler servicing in Baldock.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
It is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) for up to one hour on site. Say yes to the repair while the engineer is still there and £70 of it is credited.
Affinity Water’s 2025 report for the Baldock and Letchworth zone gives 318 mg/l as calcium carbonate. That is very hard.
In water this hard the usual cause is scale in the plate heat exchanger, though a diverter valve can do the same. The diagnostic tells us which.
One reset as the manual describes is fine. If it locks out again, leave it and call, because the fault is still there.
Check the condensate pipe outside. If it has frozen, warm water along it and a reset often bring the boiler back.
Yes. Most repairs need only care with access, and anything affecting the flue or outside walls is discussed before work starts.
Any make you are likely to have in an SG7 house. Our own installs are mainly Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch too.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, which shows their photo and the work they can do. Our company registration is 956889.
