HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Most boiler breakdowns in Berkhamsted have an ordinary cause, and the hard water plays its part. We find the fault for a fixed fee, then give you a straight answer on repairing it.

On most systems that points away from the burner and towards the pump, a motorised valve, the programmer or a room thermostat that has stopped calling for heat. A pump that hums, rattles or runs hot to the touch is a common culprit.
On a combi this is usually the diverter valve sticking, or a hot water plate so furred with scale that it can no longer pass heat across. On a system with a cylinder, look at the cylinder thermostat and valve first.
A gauge that sinks below 1 bar again and again means water is leaving the sealed system. It may be a weeping radiator valve, the pressure relief valve discharging outside, a tired expansion vessel or a leak inside the boiler casing.
A fault code that returns after every reset, a rumble like a kettle from the heat exchanger, or water dripping from under the boiler all need the casing off, and that is Gas Safe work.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Lockouts are the boiler protecting itself from something. Resetting it again and again can hide a failing fan, a blocked flue or a gas valve problem until the day it will not restart at all.
Our engineers work through the fault in order: what the controls are asking for, what the boiler is reporting, and what the readings show. The aim is to fix the cause once, not to leave you with a boiler that works until the next cold night.
Affinity Water supplies the town, and its own report for the Berkhamsted zone gives a total hardness of 285 mg/l as calcium carbonate for 2025. That sits just below the 300 mark, so the water is hard rather than very hard.
It is still well over the 200 mg/l level at which Building Regulations guidance says the feed to a combi should be treated to slow limescale. Scale forms where water is heated, so the main heat exchanger and a combi’s hot water plate take the brunt.
Lukewarm showers that drift in temperature and a kettling noise on heat up are the usual early signs. A descale or a new plate often restores an otherwise healthy combi, and we look at that before anyone talks about replacement.
Houses up on the valley sides, around Shootersway, Swing Gate and Chesham Road, sit well above the river and catch the cold. Condensing boilers drain through a plastic pipe that often runs outside, and in a hard frost it freezes and the boiler locks out, sometimes with a gurgle.
Warm water, never boiling, poured slowly along the outside section usually frees it, and one reset brings the boiler back. If it happens every winter, a larger or rerouted pipe is the proper fix, and we can price that on the visit.
Every boiler fault starts with our Gas Safe diagnostic at a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). That covers attending, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, for up to one hour on site.
Go ahead with the repair on the same visit and £70 of the diagnostic is taken off the repair price. You hear that price before any part is fitted.
Outside weekday hours, gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT for each half hour after, with the out of hours call-out of £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) on top. Our pricing page has the full list.
Gas supply and pressure at the boiler
Flue route and terminal outside
Fault history and any stored codes
System pressure, expansion vessel and relief valve
Condition of the heat exchanger and hot water side
Only then do we tell you what has failed, what it costs to put right and whether the boiler is worth it. If the answer is that it is not, you hear that before you spend anything more.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
A few things are worth trying before you ring, and none of them involve opening the boiler.
Thermostat and programmer set to call for heat, especially after a power cut
Pressure gauge at about 1 to 1.5 bar cold, topped up through the filling loop if you know how
The outside condensate pipe thawed with warm water after a frost
One reset, exactly as the manual describes
Beyond that, stop. Removing the casing or touching anything on the gas side is legally Gas Safe work only, and a mistake there can put carbon monoxide into the house.
In the Victorian terraces and the interwar council housing, we still find old iron pipe on the heating and imperial copper on the water. A fault that looks like the boiler can sit in pipework or controls added during one of many alterations, so we trace what feeds what before condemning anything.
Homes built before 1970 may also still have a lead supply pipe, which the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises replacing. If we see one while we are working, we will mention it.
Most of the time repair wins. Pumps, fans, valves, sensors and diverter parts are routine, and a boiler with a sound heat exchanger can run for years after they are changed.
When the heat exchanger is failing, parts can no longer be sourced or the bill starts to approach the cost of a new boiler, we show you both figures side by side. Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and our boiler installation in Berkhamsted page explains what is included.
We repair every common make, including the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we fit ourselves. Our engineers are employed directly, not subcontracted, and they arrive in fully stocked vans.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card before anyone opens your boiler; ours carry registration 956889. Once the repair is done, the labour is guaranteed for 12 months.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
It is a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), and £70 of that comes off the repair if you go ahead on the same visit.
Affinity Water gives 285 mg/l for the Berkhamsted zone, which is hard. Over the years that scales heat exchangers and combi hot water plates.
Water is escaping from the sealed system, perhaps at a radiator valve, the relief valve or inside the boiler. Finding where is part of the diagnostic.
The condensate pipe outside has most likely frozen. Pour warm water along it and press reset one time; if it is a yearly event, have the pipe rerouted.
No. Anything behind the casing is Gas Safe work, for your safety and by law.
Yes, all makes and ages, as long as parts can still be sourced. If they cannot, we tell you straight away.
You are given the price before work starts, and if something different turns up the engineer stops and prices it with you.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. Our business registration is 956889.
Yes, our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
Sometimes, when the heat exchanger has failed or parts are scarce. Swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and we will show you both options.
Our engineers travel from Stevenage to all of HP4, from the High Street and Charles Street down by the canal to Bridgewater Road, Gossoms End, Northchurch and the higher ground around Shootersway.
In the conservation area, where there is rarely room for a van outside, we sort out access on the phone before the engineer arrives.
Call 01462 506 374 and read us the model and whatever code the display shows. The diagnostic is fixed price, and you hear the cost before anyone arrives.
