Boiler Repair in Biggleswade

Most breakdowns we are called to in Biggleswade have an ordinary cause: a worn part, scale from hard water or a sludged heating circuit. We find out which on a fixed fee before any part is ordered.

Boiler Repair in Biggleswade

Symptoms and what usually sits behind them

No heating at all: a pump, diverter valve, controls or a thermostat that has stopped calling

Radiators warm but no hot water: in a combi, often scale in the plate heat exchanger

Pressure falling every few days: a weeping valve, a leak or a flat expansion vessel

Lockouts that return after each reset: ignition, flame sensing, the fan or the flue

Kettling: water boiling against a scaled or poorly circulated heat exchanger

Frozen condensate: the outside plastic drain iced up on a hard morning

Water under the boiler: a failed seal, a relief valve discharging or a corroded fitting

A fault code narrows the search. It does not name the failed part, which is why we test before we order anything.

Get a fixed price before we start

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

Fault finding, not button pressing

Resetting a boiler clears the symptom for an hour or a day. It does nothing about the cause, and a boiler that locks out again and again is telling you something specific. Our engineers read the stored fault history where the boiler keeps one, then test the component the code points to and the ones around it.

A lockout blamed on ignition can turn out to be a blocked condensate trap backing up into the combustion chamber. Pressure loss blamed on the boiler can be a radiator valve weeping behind a sofa. Finding the real cause first stops you paying for a part that was never broken.

Before a price is given, the engineer checks the gas pressure at the appliance, the flue, the condensate route, the system pressure and the controls, so the quote covers the actual fault rather than a guess.

What the diagnostic costs

Every boiler fault visit starts with a fixed Gas Safe diagnostic at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). For that you get the engineer’s time on site, up to an hour, to find the fault and do any small fix that needs no new part.

Go ahead with the repair on that visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair price. Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) out of hours call-out, all confirmed before we set off.

Hard water and Biggleswade boilers

Every source we have checked describes Biggleswade water as hard or very hard. We have not yet confirmed the supplier’s own zone figure for SG18, so no number appears here. What we can describe is what hard water does inside a boiler, because we see the results when the casing comes off.

Scale forms wherever water is heated. In a combi the plate heat exchanger for the taps takes it first, so hot water runs lukewarm or swings between hot and cold while the radiators behave normally. On the heating side a scaled heat exchanger kettles, and the parts around it run hotter than they should.

Building Regulations guidance is that water harder than 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi. If yours has no scale reducer on the incoming cold main, we will say whether one is worth fitting once the repair is done.

Checks you can make first

The pressure gauge

Cold, most sealed systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar. If the needle is near zero, the filling loop instructions in your manual usually get the boiler going, but pressure that keeps dropping means water is escaping somewhere.

Power and controls

Check the fused spur beside the boiler is on, the programmer is in a heating period and the room thermostat is set above the temperature of the room. If you have a gas hob, try it to rule out the supply.

A frozen condensate pipe

On a frosty morning, pour warm, not boiling, water along the white plastic pipe outside where it leaves the wall, then reset once.

Where your part ends

The casing stays on. Anything behind it, from the gas valve to the burner and flue, is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer and nobody else.

Diagnosed properly before anyone quotes

A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.

Pipework as well as the boiler

Radiators cold along the bottom, a slow warm up and pumps that fail early usually point to black magnetite sludge in the heating water. That is a circulation fault. A new boiler connected to a sludged system inherits the problem, and some manufacturers will not honour a warranty on a dirty system.

We look at the system water as part of the diagnosis. If cleaning is the fix, our power flushing page explains how we decide, and we say plainly when a flush is not what is needed.

Repair or replace: the honest version

A boiler with one failed part and a sound heat exchanger is usually worth repairing, and we will tell you so even when a new one would be a bigger job for us.

The picture changes when the heat exchanger is badly scaled or leaking, parts are hard to come by, or this is the third call of the winter. Then we set out both routes with prices so you can compare them side by side.

Replacement combi, system and regular boilers start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old boiler removed and the warranty registered for you. More detail is on our boiler installation page.

Makes we repair, and who does the work

We repair all makes. Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch are the boilers we fit most, so our engineers know them inside out, but we work on older and less common boilers too and tell you early if parts for one are scarce.

The engineer who arrives is employed by us and comes from our Stevenage base. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card before they start: it carries a photo and lists the types of gas work they are qualified for. Our company registration is 956889.

After the repair

With the boiler running again, the engineer puts it through a heating and a hot water cycle, checks the pressure holds and shows you anything worth keeping an eye on. Our labour on the repair carries a 12 month guarantee.

If the boiler is due its annual service, that can be added while the engineer is with you for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), about thirty minutes, which saves a second visit. See boiler servicing in Biggleswade.

Frequently asked questions

In hard water the likeliest cause is scale in the combi’s plate heat exchanger that serves the taps. It is a common, usually repairable fault, and scale protection afterwards slows it coming back.

£150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed, with up to an hour on site. If you go ahead with the repair on that visit, £70 comes off the repair.

Once or twice, following the manual, yes. If it locks out again, stop there and have it diagnosed, because repeated resets can hide a problem that is getting worse.

Yes, all makes, whoever installed them.

Hard, and some sources say very hard. We have not confirmed the supplier’s own figure for SG18, so we do not quote a number.

Usually for a short while, but the noise means the heat exchanger is under strain. Have it looked at before a cold spell rather than waiting for it to stop.

Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check it covers the work they are doing. Every engineer we send works under registration 956889.

Yes. You get the repair price and, where it makes sense, the replacement price, and the choice is yours.

Something is losing water, usually a valve, a radiator, the pressure relief valve or the expansion vessel. Topping up buys time, but the leak still needs finding.

Our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
