HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
In the 1930s, central heating in a new Brookmans Park house often meant just the hall and the landing. Most boilers we repair here sit on systems added in stages since. We find the fault for a fixed fee and price the repair first.

Some of the builders selling houses here in the 1930s advertised central heating for the hall and the first floor landing, and not much more. Full systems came later, and in many homes they have been replaced more than once.
So a modern boiler in the village is often connected to pipework from two or three different eras. When it breaks down, the cause can be in the circuit just as easily as in the boiler, and we test both before anything is replaced.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Whatever the make, the calls we get from AL9 usually start with one of these:
No heating at all, or radiators that stay cold
Heating working but no hot water from the taps
Pressure that drops and needs topping up every few days
A lockout code that comes back after every reset
Kettling, a rumble or bang when the burner fires
A gurgle and shutdown on a freezing morning
A pump that whines, grinds or has stopped
Water dripping from underneath the boiler
One end of a bungalow warm and the other cold
Write down the fault code, the make and the model before you ring. It lets the engineer arrive with the likely parts on the van.
A reset clears the code, not the cause. A boiler that locks out on low pressure will do it again until the leak is found, and one that trips on overheating is telling you water is not moving through it properly.
We read the fault history, test the part the code points to and then check whether something upstream made it fail. Replacing a component that was only a symptom means paying twice.
On older systems in the village we also look at what the boiler is connected to. Sludge from pipework that has been in place since before the war can starve a modern heat exchanger of flow, and no amount of new parts on the boiler will cure that.
In a single storey home the radiators are strung out along one long floor. When the far end stays cool, the cause is usually balancing, a seized radiator valve or thermostatic head, or a pump that is no longer strong enough, rather than the boiler.
Balancing a system costs far less than a new pump or boiler, so it is one of the first things we check in a bungalow or bungalette before any part is condemned.
Gas pressure at the boiler, the burner and ignition, and whether the flue is sound and the combustion reading is safe.
System pressure, the expansion vessel, the pump, the diverter valve on a combi and any sign of leaks inside the casing.
The programmer, thermostats and wiring centre, since a failed control can look exactly like a failed boiler.
Only then do you get a repair price, and nothing is fitted until you agree to it.
Our Gas Safe diagnostic costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. That covers attending, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, for up to an hour on site.
Agree to the repair on that same visit and £70 of the diagnostic is taken off the repair bill. Outside weekday hours, gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour after, plus the out of hours call-out, and you hear all of it before we set off.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Affinity Water supplies the Welwyn Hatfield area, but it publishes no figure that pins down which of its zones feeds the village, so we will not quote you a hardness number. The nearest zones it does publish are hard.
In practice we judge it from the boiler. Scale on a combi’s plate heat exchanger shows as hot water that surges and fades, and on the main heat exchanger as kettling. Building Regulations guidance says water above 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi, which is worth checking when a new boiler goes in.
A few checks are safe and sometimes solve the problem:
The pressure gauge, usually 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, topped up through the filling loop as your manual shows
Power to the boiler, the programmer times and the thermostat setting
The white condensate pipe outside, thawed with warm water after a frost
One reset, noting any code that appears
That is where it stops. Taking the casing off or touching anything on the gas side is legally work for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Most faults are worth repairing. A sound boiler with one failed fan, sensor or valve should be fixed, and we will say so.
When the heat exchanger is failing, parts are hard to get or the repair would cost a large share of a new boiler, we give you both prices. Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with next day installation on most standard swaps, subject to survey. More on that is on our boiler installation page.
If you do replace, the old boiler is taken away, the manufacturer warranty is registered for you, and selected models carry a guarantee of up to 12 years. Either way, the decision is yours once you have both figures.
We repair all the common makes. The boilers we fit are mostly Vaillant and Ideal, with some Worcester Bosch, but a repair visit is not a sales visit.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card of anyone who works on your boiler and check it covers gas boilers. Our registration is 956889, the engineer is one of our own employees, and the repair carries our 12 month labour guarantee.
Before leaving, the engineer runs the boiler through heating and hot water, checks the pressure has held and explains what was replaced and why.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
A fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), with £70 taken off the repair if you go ahead on the same visit.
Usually a leak somewhere on the system or a failing pressure relief valve or expansion vessel. Topping up treats the symptom, so we look for the cause.
Affinity Water does not publish a figure we can tie to the village itself, so we do not quote one. The nearby zones it publishes are hard.
Often balancing, a seized radiator valve or a tired pump rather than the boiler. We check the system before replacing boiler parts.
Once is fine. If it locks out again, the fault needs finding rather than clearing.
Yes, all the common makes, whoever installed them.
When the heat exchanger is failing, parts are scarce, or the repair costs a large share of a replacement. We give you both prices and you decide.
Ask for their Gas Safe ID card and look at the categories on the back. Ours are registered under 956889.
Yes, our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
