HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Buntingford’s water is some of the hardest we deal with, and it shows inside boilers. Our Gas Safe engineers find the real fault for a fixed fee, repair any make and tell you honestly whether the boiler is worth keeping.

Affinity Water supplies Buntingford from its Buntingford/Therfield zone, and its own 2025 report gives total hardness of 375 mg/l as calcium carbonate, with calcium averaging 150 mg/l. Anything over 300 is classed very hard.
Heat drives scale out of water. Inside a boiler it settles on the hottest surfaces: the main heat exchanger and, on a combi, the plate heat exchanger that heats your taps. The waterways narrow and the boiler works harder for less.
Building regulations guidance says water over 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi. At nearly twice that, a scale reducer on the cold supply earns its keep, and we check for one on every Buntingford repair.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Hot water swinging between warm and scalding
A rumbling or kettling noise as the burner fires
Hot water slow to arrive at the tap
Overheat lockouts with a fault code
Tap cartridges and valves around the house failing early
Most of this is repairable. Descaling, or replacing a plate heat exchanger, often brings a combi back to full output without a new boiler. Left alone, heavy scale can overheat a heat exchanger until it cracks, which is the costly end of the problem.
No heating while the boiler fires usually means a pump, motorised valve or thermostat outside the boiler. A combi giving heating but no hot water points to the diverter valve.
Pressure that keeps sinking below 1 bar means water is escaping, from a radiator valve, the relief valve or an internal joint, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge.
After a hard frost, a lockout is often the condensate pipe frozen where it runs outside. Warm water poured along it, then a single reset, usually clears it.
Water dripping from the casing, or from the pipe that runs outside from the relief valve, means something inside is letting by. Switch the boiler off at the spur and call.
A reset clears the code, not the cause. We test components in turn until the fault is proved, then show you what failed before quoting.
Before a price is given we also check the part is still available, whether anything else has been damaged and the state of the heating water. You get one figure, and if the job changes once started, we stop and talk first.
It also protects you from paying for parts you did not need. Swapping components until a symptom goes away is the dearest way there is to repair a boiler.
A Gas Safe diagnostic is a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). It covers coming out, finding the fault and any minor work needing no parts, for up to an hour on site.
Have the repair done on that visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off it. Evening and weekend gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, with the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out as well, all said before we set off. Every rate is on our pricing page.
Make sure the programmer has not reset after a power cut and the thermostat is set above room temperature.
Most systems want 1 to 1.5 bar cold. If you know how to use the filling loop, top up; if it falls again within days, there is a leak to find.
Never take the casing off or touch the gas valve. That is work for Gas Safe registered engineers only, and you should ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before they begin.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Some homes in the outlying hamlets may not be on mains gas and run oil, LPG or electric heating instead, which uses different components.
Tell us the fuel when you ring and we will say straight away whether it is work we can take on. It saves a wasted journey for both of us.
In the timber framed and Georgian fronted houses of the conservation area, boilers often sit in awkward corners, with flues worked around the building. We agree anything that affects the fabric before doing it, and plan van parking on the High Street before arriving.
Pipework in these homes has usually been replaced several times, so a cold radiator can be a pipework or balancing problem rather than a boiler fault. We tell you which it is.
Where steel pipework survives from an old gravity system, it narrows inside over the years until a radiator will not heat however hard the boiler works. A new boiler would not cure that, and we will not suggest one.
We repair all makes and would rather fix a sound boiler than sell a new one. When a heat exchanger has failed, parts are obsolete or repairs keep adding up, we put both costs side by side. Age alone is not a reason to replace: a well kept older boiler with parts still made can be worth keeping for years.
A replacement starts from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old boiler removed, the warranty registered and up to 12 years of manufacturer guarantee on selected models. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, and Worcester Bosch too. See boiler installation in Buntingford.
Our engineers are employed by us, not subcontracted, and the labour on every repair is guaranteed for 12 months.
If the boiler is due a service, it can be done while we are there for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), about thirty minutes. Our Buntingford servicing page explains what that includes.
You also get a plain account of what failed, what we replaced and anything else worth planning for, such as a heat exchanger beginning to show its age.

Affinity Water’s 2025 report for the Buntingford/Therfield zone gives 375 mg/l as calcium carbonate, which is very hard.
A fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), with £70 off the repair if you go ahead on the same visit.
In water this hard, scale on the plate heat exchanger is the usual cause. A sticking diverter valve is the other suspect.
Often descaling or a new plate heat exchanger is enough. We tell you plainly when it is not.
Tell us what you have when you ring and we will say plainly whether we can help.
Water is escaping somewhere, often a radiator valve, the relief valve or inside the boiler, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge.
Once or twice, as the manual describes, and note any code on the display first because it helps us. If it keeps locking out, the cause needs finding.
Every make. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, plus Worcester Bosch, but repairs are not limited to the makes we install.
Ask for their Gas Safe ID card, which shows the types of gas work they are qualified for. Our company registration is 956889.
