HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Cambourne’s water measures 317.8 mg/l in Cambridge Water’s own zone figures, and the first homes are now over 25 years old. We find the fault for a fixed fee and quote before any repair.

Cambridge Water’s own list of parishes puts Cambourne in its Coton water quality zone, Z6. The company’s 2025 samples for that zone show total hardness of 317.8 mg/l as calcium carbonate, which is 22.2 Clark degrees, with calcium at 120.4 mg/l.
That is very hard water, and it is the zone figure rather than a test of your own tap. Building Regulations guidance says water above 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combination boiler, and Cambourne is well past that line.
In practice it means scale. The plate heat exchanger that heats a combi’s tap water narrows first, then the main heat exchanger, and the boiler starts to overheat, kettle or cut out.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
These are the faults behind most of our Cambourne repair visits:
Hot water swings hot and cold: scale on the plate heat exchanger or a sticking diverter valve
Radiators cold, taps hot: pump, motorised valve, thermostat or programmer
Pressure falling over days: a relief valve, expansion vessel or hidden leak
Repeated lockouts: ignition, flame sensing, flue or overheating
Kettling: water boiling in a scaled heat exchanger
Stopped on a frosty morning: an iced up condensate pipe
Give us the make, model and any code on the display when you call, so the engineer can bring likely parts.
Building started in June 1998, and the original consent was for 3,300 homes, with 950 more approved in October 2011. A boiler fitted in the first years of Great Cambourne or Lower Cambourne is now well past the age where parts start to wear together.
Where a later boiler has been fitted to the original pipework, it can pick up whatever has settled in the system over the years. Cold spots at the bottom of radiators and a noisy pump are the usual signs, and the engineer checks the heating water as well as the boiler.
Outline consent for a further 2,350 homes west of Lower Cambourne came in January 2017. In the newest of those houses, a fault in the first couple of years may be something the builder or the boiler manufacturer should put right.
If what we find looks like an installation fault on a home still under warranty, we tell you, rather than charge for something someone else should fix. If the heating has failed and there is a vulnerable person in the house, we will still get it going safely.
On a sealed system the gauge usually wants to sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. If it has dropped and you know how to use the filling loop, top it up as the manual shows. If it keeps dropping, water is escaping and topping up just hides it.
Check the thermostat is set above the room temperature, the programmer has not reset after a power cut, and the boiler has power at the fused spur.
After a hard frost, follow the plastic pipe from the boiler to the outside. Warm, not boiling, water poured along the frozen section usually clears it, and the boiler can then be reset once.
Do not take the casing off. The burner, gas valve, fan and flue are Gas Safe work only, and trying them yourself is dangerous and can void the guarantee.
A boiler that rumbles or bangs like a kettle as it heats is boiling water inside a heat exchanger that scale or sludge has narrowed. Left alone it overheats and locks out, and the heat exchanger wears early. Descaling or cleaning the system often cures it if caught in time.
A pump that whines or clatters may be worn, or may be struggling against debris. On a cold morning, a boiler that gurgles and stops has usually got a frozen condensate pipe; if it happens every winter, rerouting or upsizing that pipe is a small job that ends it.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
A Gas Safe diagnostic is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). It is fixed, and covers attending, diagnosing and any minor work needing no parts, for up to one hour on site.
If you go ahead with the repair while the engineer is there, £70 of the diagnostic is taken off the repair. Evening and weekend gas work runs at £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT for each half hour after, with the out of hours call-out added.
Resetting a boiler that has locked out only clears the message. Our engineers test the gas supply, flue, condensate route and the components involved, and read any stored fault history, before they name a part.
You then get a price for the repair, parts and labour included, and nothing happens until you agree. If the job changes once work starts, the engineer stops and prices it again.
We repair all makes, and a single failed fan, pump or valve on a boiler with a sound heat exchanger is almost always worth fixing.
If the heat exchanger has failed, parts are obsolete or the bill is heading towards a large share of a new boiler, you get both prices side by side. A straight swap starts at £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and most standard replacements can be fitted the next day once surveyed. Boiler installation in Cambourne has the detail.
Repairs carry our 12 month labour guarantee. You are told what failed, what was fitted, and anything else worth keeping an eye on.
If the service is due, it can be done on the same visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), about thirty minutes extra. Ask any engineer to show their Gas Safe ID card before they start; our company registration is 956889.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
It is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed, for up to an hour on site. Agree the repair there and then and £70 is knocked off it.
Cambridge Water’s 2025 figure for the Coton zone, which covers Cambourne, is 317.8 mg/l, or 22.2 Clark degrees. That is very hard.
Scale in the plate heat exchanger is the usual cause in water this hard, though a diverter valve can do the same. The diagnostic tells us which.
If it is still inside the builder’s warranty, check with them first. If you are not sure, ring us and we will give you an honest view.
On a combi in water over 300 mg/l it usually is, and Building Regulations guidance recommends treating water above 200 mg/l.
Once is fine. If it keeps falling, water is escaping somewhere and needs finding.
All makes. Vaillant and Ideal are what we install most, alongside Worcester Bosch.
Yes. Saturday and Sunday gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour, £75 + VAT per half hour after that, and the out of hours call-out on top.
That is kettling, usually scale or sludge restricting flow through the heat exchanger. It is worth having looked at before it causes a lockout.
Yes. If a repair is poor value, you get the repair price and the replacement price to compare, and the choice is yours.
