Boiler Repair in Cambridge

Cambridge water is very hard on both sides of the Cam, and boilers show it. We find the fault for a fixed fee, then price the repair before any work starts.

Boiler Repair in Cambridge

Symptoms we hear about most

Radiators cold while the boiler display looks normal

Combi hot water that goes lukewarm or surges

Pressure that drops back after every top up

Lockout codes after an ignition or flame failure

Kettling, a rumble or knock as the burner fires

A condensate pipe frozen solid after a cold night

Water dripping from under the boiler casing

Each of these has several possible causes, and two boilers with the same symptom can need quite different repairs. The work is in finding which one applies to yours before any part is ordered or fitted.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

North and south of the Cam

Cambridge Water splits the city along the river. North of it, zone Z1 Cambridge City North, covering wards such as Arbury, Castle, King’s Hedges, Newnham and West Chesterton, had total hardness of 334.6 mg/l as calcium carbonate in 2025 samples, about 23.4 Clark degrees.

South of the river, zone Z2 Cambridge City South, covering Abbey, Cherry Hinton, Coleridge, Market, Petersfield, Queen Edith’s, Romsey and Trumpington, was 307.2 mg/l, about 21.5 Clark degrees. These are the company’s zone figures, not a test of your own tap.

Both are very hard. That is why so many of our Cambridge boiler repairs begin with scale on the plate heat exchanger of a combi or on the main heat exchanger of an older boiler.

Finding the fault, not clearing it

Pressing reset can bring a boiler back for a day. It does not tell you why it stopped, and a lockout that keeps returning is the boiler protecting itself from something.

Our engineers read the fault history, then test the ignition, flame sensing, fan, pump, pressure vessel and gas supply until the failed part is found. That way you pay for the repair the boiler actually needs.

Some faults only appear when the boiler is working hard, so the engineer may run it on heating and hot water in turn while watching the readings. It takes a little longer but avoids replacing a part that was never at fault.

Before we give you a repair price

A price is only worth having once the checks are done. On a Cambridge repair visit, the engineer looks at:

The combustion and gas pressure

Scale on the heat exchanger and hot water side

The condition of the heating water and inhibitor

Whether the cylinder, valves or controls are the real cause

If more than one thing is wrong, you get each one priced separately and choose what to do.

The housing makes a difference

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Around Mill Road, extensions and loft conversions added over the years mean heating circuits can run in unexpected directions. We trace what feeds what before blaming the boiler.

Post-war homes north of the river

In Chesterton and Arbury, older systems can still have imperial copper that needs adaptors, and cylinders well past their best. If the repair goes beyond the boiler, you get the price for that first.

New estates

At Great Kneighton, Trumpington Meadows and Darwin Green, boilers are younger and may still be under guarantee. Faults there more often involve pressure, controls or an installation detail than wear.

Eddington and district heating

Eddington was planned with a district heating energy centre. If your home is heated that way, there may be no gas boiler to repair, and the fault may belong to the heat network’s operator.

If you are not sure what heats your home, describe it when you ring. We will tell you honestly whether it is something we can help with.

Diagnosed properly before anyone quotes

A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.

What you can check before calling

Look at the pressure gauge; most sealed systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Check the fused spur, the timer and the thermostat, and reset once if the manual allows it. Note any fault code.

In a hard frost, pour warm, not boiling, water along the outside section of the condensate pipe, then reset. If one radiator is cold at the top, bleeding it is also a safe job, as long as you check the pressure again afterwards.

Beyond that is gas work. Taking the casing off, touching the gas valve, burner or flue, is legally for a Gas Safe registered engineer only.

The fixed diagnostic

In Cambridge the Gas Safe diagnostic is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). It covers coming out, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, with up to an hour on site.

Agree to the repair on that same visit and £70 of the diagnostic is taken off the bill. Out of hours gas work is charged at £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the out of hours call-out, all confirmed before we set off.

Repair it or replace it

If the boiler is sound apart from one failed part, we will recommend the repair. We work on all the common makes, not only the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we install.

A boiler with a heavily scaled heat exchanger and faults that keep returning can cost more to keep going than to replace. In that case you get both prices. Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and our boiler installation in Cambridge page explains the survey and fitting.

On most standard replacements, next day installation is available subject to survey. The old boiler is taken away and the manufacturer warranty is registered for you, with up to 12 years on selected boilers.

The engineer, and after the repair

Ask anyone working on your boiler to show their Gas Safe ID card. Ours are directly employed, carry the card and work under company registration 956889.

After the repair, the boiler is tested on heating and hot water and you are told what failed. Labour is guaranteed for 12 months, and if a service is due it can be added on the visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT). See boiler servicing in Cambridge.

Frequently asked questions

Very hard. Cambridge Water’s 2025 figures are 334.6 mg/l north of the Cam and 307.2 mg/l south of it.

A fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) for up to an hour on site, with £70 credited if you go ahead with the repair on that visit.

In water this hard, scale on the plate heat exchanger is the most common cause. It is often repairable once confirmed.

Yes, all the common makes, including ones we did not install.

No. Anything behind the casing is gas work and must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

It may be. Check the paperwork before booking, because a manufacturer may want to handle a warranty fault itself.

It depends on how the home is heated. If it is on the district heating network, there may be no boiler; ring and describe it and we will tell you honestly.

Water is escaping somewhere, from a radiator valve, the relief valve or inside the boiler, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Each needs testing.

Yes. You get the repair price and, where it makes sense, what a replacement would cost, and the decision is yours.

Their Gas Safe ID card, which shows their photograph and the gas work they are qualified for.

Often the condensate pipe outside has frozen. Warm water poured along it and one reset usually clears it; if the boiler locks out again, call us.
