Boiler failed in Codicote? Our Gas Safe engineers diagnose the fault for a fixed fee, explain it in plain words and price the fix before anything is done. Every common make repaired.

Codicote is high and exposed, with parts of the parish above 120 metres, and frost here is harder than down in the valleys. When the temperature drops, the first boiler fault we usually hear about is a frozen condensate pipe.
A condensing boiler drains a little acidic water through a plastic pipe, often run outside. When that freezes, the water backs up and the boiler locks out, normally with a code on the display and sometimes a gurgle.
Warm water, not boiling, poured slowly along the outside run usually frees it, and one reset brings the boiler back. If it happens every winter, a larger or rerouted pipe is the lasting fix, and we can price it on the visit.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Affinity Water supplies the village, and its own 2025 report for the Codicote zone gives a total hardness of 290 mg/l as calcium carbonate. That is just under the 300 line, so it is classed hard rather than very hard.
It is still well above the 200 mg/l point at which Building Regulations guidance says the supply to a combi should be treated. Scale builds where water is hottest: the plate heat exchanger on a combi, causing lukewarm or wandering hot water, and the main heat exchanger, causing kettling.
A descale or a new plate often restores a combi that is otherwise sound. We look at that first, before anyone mentions a new boiler.
Frost and scale are not the whole story. These are the other faults that bring us to the village most often.
No heat at all: a pump, diverter valve or the controls
No hot water: a stuck diverter or a scaled plate
Pressure falling: a leak or a flat expansion vessel
Repeated lockouts: ignition, fan or flue faults
A noisy pump: worn bearings or air in the system
Water under the boiler: a seal, valve or relief pipe
Note any fault code and roughly when the problem started. It makes the diagnosis quicker and more certain.
Pressing reset until the flame catches is not a repair. Our engineers work out why it stopped, checking the gas supply, the flue, the stored fault history, system pressure and the condition of the heat exchanger before saying anything about parts.
Only then do you get a price for the repair, with the reason for it explained in plain words. If we cannot be sure without testing a part, we tell you that too rather than fitting parts on hope. A fault that only appears in a cold snap, or only when the hot water and heating run together, is worth describing in detail when you ring.
A boiler fault visit is a Gas Safe diagnostic at a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), covering attendance, diagnosis and any minor work that needs no parts, for up to an hour on site.
If you go ahead with the repair on that same visit, £70 of the diagnostic is taken off the repair price.
Gas work in the evening or at weekends is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the out of hours call-out, and you are told that before we set off. The rest of our rates are on the pricing page.
Check the pressure gauge. Cold, it should usually sit around 1 to 1.5 bar, and topping it up through the filling loop is a job the manual shows you how to do.
Make sure the thermostat and timer are calling for heat and the fused spur is on, because a power cut can quietly reset a programmer. After a frost, look at the condensate pipe outside.
Nothing inside the casing is a DIY job. Gas work is legally for Gas Safe registered engineers only, and you should ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before they start.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
The conservation area around the High Street, St Albans Road and Bury Lane has 28 Grade II listed buildings, some of them sixteenth century timber frames. Boilers in houses like these are often tucked into odd corners, with flues and condensate pipes routed wherever was allowed.
A like for like repair avoids moving a flue on a listed wall, which is another reason to repair where it makes sense. In the 1960s and 70s estates, pipework may be original, and national guidance says homes built before 1970 may still have a lead supply pipe, so we mention it if we see one.
With new homes going up on the edge of Codicote, off Heath Lane and elsewhere, some boilers here are young enough to still be inside their manufacturer guarantee.
If yours is, check the paperwork before booking any repair, because the guarantee terms may say who should attend. If it is outside the guarantee, or the terms allow it, we repair it like any other.
We repair all makes and will tell you whether a repair is worth doing. A scaled combi can often be put right with a new plate heat exchanger for far less than a new boiler.
Where a boiler is failing on several fronts, or the parts cost more than it is worth, we say so. Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and our boiler installation page for Codicote explains what is included.
If you do choose a new boiler, next day installation is available on most standard replacements, subject to a survey, and the old boiler is taken away. There is no pressure either way; you get both figures and make the call.
Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch are the makes we fit, but we repair all the common makes. Our engineers are our own staff, not subcontractors, and the vans are stocked for the usual failures.
Labour on every repair is guaranteed for 12 months. If the same fault comes back in that time, ring us.

Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
Almost certainly a frozen condensate pipe. On Codicote’s high ground, a larger or rerouted pipe is often the lasting fix.
Finding the fault costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), whatever it turns out to be. Go ahead with the repair on the same visit and £70 of that is deducted.
Affinity Water gives 290 mg/l for its Codicote zone, which is hard. Over time that scales heat exchangers, causing kettling and poor hot water.
No. Anything behind the casing is Gas Safe work, for safety and by law.
Yes, all makes, provided parts are available and the repair makes sense for you.
Ring 01462 506 374 and a person answers. Out of hours gas rates are given to you before we set off.
Yes, but check your manufacturer guarantee first, as its terms may say who should attend.
Water is escaping from the sealed system somewhere, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Finding which is part of the diagnostic.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card. Our registration number is 956889.
Yes, our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
