HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
In Cuffley we repair as many regular boilers with a cylinder and loft tank as we do combis. Either way, the fault is diagnosed on a fixed fee and you agree the repair price before any work starts.

Cuffley grew after the railway arrived in 1910, with substantial housing near the station by the 1930s and most of today’s layout in place after post-war building. Many homes still run a regular boiler, a vented hot water cylinder and a feed and expansion tank in the loft.
Most houses have also been extended, some more than once. A boiler sized for the original house may now be heating an extra bedroom, a kitchen extension and a second bathroom, and some complaints that sound like faults are really a system working at the edge of its capacity.
Where heating was added or altered in the 1970s and 1980s, narrow 8mm and 10mm microbore pipe is common, and it silts up faster than standard 15mm pipe. Each of these set-ups fails in its own way, so diagnosis comes before any part.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
These account for most of our repair calls in the village, with the first thing we test for each:
No heating: pump, motorised zone valve, controls or a silted circuit
No hot water: cylinder thermostat, zone valve or, on a combi, the diverter
Pressure loss: a leak, the relief valve or the expansion vessel
Lockouts: ignition, flame sensing, the flue or a blocked condensate
Kettling: scale on the heat exchanger or poor flow through it
Frozen condensate: ice in the outside drain pipe after a hard frost
A leak from the boiler itself is handled the same way: we find where the water is coming from before deciding what to replace.
A reset button clears a lockout, not the reason for it. Our engineers read the fault code and any stored history, then test the part it points to and the parts that feed it. On a regular system that includes the cylinder thermostat, zone valves and pump, because a boiler that never gets a call for heat looks broken when it is not.
Before you are given a price, the gas pressure, the flue, the condensate route and the controls are all checked, so the quote covers the real fault and nothing else.
A boiler fault visit is a Gas Safe diagnostic at a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). That covers attending, diagnosing and minor work needing no parts, for up to one hour on site.
If you want the repair done there and then, £70 of the diagnostic comes off it. You hear the fault and the price before anything beyond the diagnostic begins.
Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, with a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out, all confirmed on the phone before we set off.
Published sources agree that Cuffley water is hard, but they disagree about which company supplies it, and the only hardness figure we have found comes from a third party. Until the supplier’s own figure is confirmed we do not quote one. Your water bill tells you who supplies your address.
Hard water leaves scale wherever it is heated. In a combi that is the plate heat exchanger serving the taps, giving hot water that runs warm then cold. In a regular system it is the coil inside the cylinder, which slowly takes longer to reheat.
Guidance under the Building Regulations is that water over 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi. Scale reduction on the incoming main and the right inhibitor in the heating circuit are the lasting fixes, and we will say if either is missing.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Look at the pressure gauge against your manual, check the programmer and thermostat, make sure the fused spur is on and see whether other gas appliances work.
If the boiler fires but there is no hot water, check the cylinder thermostat has not been turned down and the programmer is set for hot water as well as heating.
After a freeze, thawing the outside condensate pipe with warm water and one reset is fine. Taking the casing off or touching anything on the gas side is Gas Safe work only.
Most faults on a boiler that has been looked after are worth repairing, and we will tell you so. An old regular boiler needing a major part, or a combi on its third scale related failure, deserves a side by side comparison, and we give you both prices.
Replacement combi, system and regular boilers start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old one taken away and the warranty registered for you. If a larger house now needs more hot water than a combi can supply, we say so rather than fit one anyway. See boiler installation.
Microbore systems often need cleaning before a new boiler goes on. Our power flushing page explains when that is worth doing and when it is not.
Every engineer we send is directly employed and works under our Gas Safe registration, 956889. Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card before work starts, and turn it over to check the categories of work it covers.
We repair all makes, including the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we fit ourselves, and we tell you early if parts for an older model are hard to find.
The engineer runs the boiler on heating and hot water, confirms the pressure holds and explains what was done. Our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
Where the fault was caused by something outside the boiler, such as sludge, scale or a failing cylinder control, you are told plainly so the same thing does not bring us back next winter.
If the boiler is due a service, we can add it to the same visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes. Details are on boiler servicing in Cuffley.

Yes. Regular boilers with a feed and expansion tank and a vented cylinder are common in Cuffley, and we work on them all the time.
£150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed, with £70 off the repair if you go ahead on the same visit.
Usually sludge settling in the radiators and pipes. On microbore it builds faster, and cleaning may be the right fix rather than a boiler part.
Published sources disagree between Thames Water and Affinity Water. Check your bill, and we will not quote a hardness figure until the supplier’s own is confirmed.
Scale on the coil or a sticking zone valve are the usual reasons. Both are straightforward to test.
Yes. In the conservation area, any change to a flue or outside pipe is planned with that status in mind.
Once or twice is fine. If the boiler keeps locking out, stop and have it diagnosed.
Not always. It depends on the system type and the incoming supply, and we check both before recommending anything.
Yes, and you should ask to see one from anyone working on your gas appliances.
Yes, our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
Boiler repairs throughout Cuffley, including Tolmers Road, Colesdale, Sopers Road, Homewood Avenue and Bradgate, and in Northaw, where the historic core is a conservation area and any change to a flue is planned with that in mind.
Goff’s Oak and Potters Bar are covered by the same engineers.
