Boiler Repair in Datchworth

What brings us out to the parish

Boiler calls from the village fall into a few patterns. Knowing which one you have makes the phone call quicker and helps the engineer bring the right parts.

Radiators cold: often a pump, diverter, motorised valve or thermostat

Taps lukewarm: commonly a scaled plate heat exchanger on a combi

Gauge falling: a weep, a relief valve or a flat expansion vessel

Locked out: ignition, flame sensing, fan or flue faults

Rumbling: kettling from scale on the heat exchanger

Dead on a frosty morning: an iced condensate pipe

Note the code on the display and what happens after one reset. Both tell us a lot before we set off.

Get a fixed price before we start

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

The water supply and your heat exchanger

Affinity Water’s own 2025 report for its Knebworth/Tewin zone (AF015) gives total hardness between 263 and 350 mg/l, with a mean of 295. A third party places Datchworth in that zone; we have not confirmed it from Affinity’s own postcode checker, so read the figure as a guide to the area.

Water in that range is hard, and it leaves scale where the water gets hottest. On a combi it narrows the plate heat exchanger, so the shower wanders between hot and cold. In the main heat exchanger it causes the kettling that owners often mistake for air in the system.

Building Regulations guidance says water over 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi’s hot water circuit. If yours has no scale reducer, we will say whether fitting one would stop the fault coming back.

Garage boilers and long condensate runs

Detached houses here often have the boiler in a garage, utility or outbuilding, with a condensate pipe running a long way outside to reach a drain. In a hard frost the water in it freezes, the trap backs up and the boiler locks out.

Warm, not boiling, water poured along the outside section usually thaws it, then a single reset brings the boiler back. If it happens every winter, rerouting the pipe or increasing its size is the lasting fix, and we can price that while we are there.

Where the pipe ends in a soakaway or a gully some distance from the house, we check that end too. A blocked outlet gives exactly the same lockout as ice.

Checks that are safe for you

Pressure

Most sealed systems want about 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Topping up with the filling loop is a householder job, but a gauge that keeps falling means a leak that needs finding.

Power and controls

Look at the timer, the room thermostat, the fused spur and whether a power cut has reset the clock. A thermostat left on its frost setting accounts for more visits than you might think.

Where it stops

Removing the casing, touching the gas valve or dismantling the flue is Gas Safe work only, by law. If the boiler locks out again after one reset, leave it off and ring.

How we find the fault

We diagnose rather than reset. The engineer checks gas pressure and combustion, tests the part the code points to, and looks at how the pump, valves and radiators are behaving before naming a cause.

That matters in older houses where the heating has been extended piece by piece. A cold bedroom can be a balancing or sludge problem rather than the boiler, and replacing a part that was not faulty helps nobody.

If the fault is intermittent, tell us when it happens: first thing in the morning, only on hot water, or only in wet weather. Patterns like that often point straight at the cause.

The fixed diagnostic and the £70 credit

A boiler fault visit is a Gas Safe diagnostic at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. It covers getting to you, finding the fault and any minor work needing no parts, with up to an hour on site.

Go ahead with the repair on that visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair. Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out, and you hear it before anyone leaves.

Diagnosed properly before anyone quotes

A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.

Repair or replace, in plain numbers

Most boilers we see are worth repairing. We work on every make, carry common parts on fully stocked vans and give you a firm price before fitting anything.

When a boiler is old, heavily scaled and failing on several fronts, we say so and show you both options. Replacement swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and our boiler installation page for Datchworth sets out what that includes.

If your boiler is still inside its manufacturer guarantee, ring the manufacturer before paying anyone for a repair. We will tell you if that applies when you call.

Makes and boiler types we work on

We repair combi, system and regular gas boilers of every make, including older floor standing models and boilers feeding a cylinder with tanks in the loft. Parts for current models are usually easy to get, and for older ones we will tell you honestly if spares are becoming scarce.

For new installations we fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, and also Worcester Bosch. That never limits what we will repair.

After the repair

When the work is done, the engineer runs the boiler through heating and hot water, rechecks the pressure and combustion, and explains what was replaced and why.

If the boiler has not been serviced for a while, it can be added on the same visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes while the case is already off.

The engineer at your door

Ask to see a Gas Safe ID card before anyone works on your boiler, and check the back lists the work being done. It takes seconds and every genuine engineer expects it.
