Boiler Repair in Hatfield

Hatfield's water, in numbers

Affinity Water publishes a water quality report for its Hatfield and Potters Bar zone, AF023. For 2025 it gives total hardness of 280 mg/l as calcium carbonate, which Affinity classes as hard. That is from a single sample, so treat it as a guide rather than a precise figure for your street.

A neighbouring zone, Potters Bar West, reads considerably higher, and we do not borrow its figure for Hatfield. Either way, heated water this hard leaves scale, and a boiler heats more water than anything else in the house.

Building Regulations guidance is that water above 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi, to slow scale, and some manufacturers make it a warranty condition. After a scale related repair, we tell you whether protection on the incoming main is worth adding.

The faults we fix most

Most calls from AL10 and AL9 come down to one of these.

Hot water fading or surging on a combi, often a scaled plate heat exchanger

No heating, usually a pump, valve, control or lockout

Pressure loss from a leak, relief valve or tired expansion vessel

Lockouts from ignition, flame sensing, fan or flue faults

Kettling, the rumble of scale in the heat exchanger

A frozen condensate pipe stopping the boiler in a cold snap

A pump that grinds or water dripping from under the casing belong on the list too, and both are cheaper caught early.

Why a reset is not a repair

Pressing reset clears a lockout. It does not remove the cause, which is why a boiler that restarts tonight often stops again tomorrow. We start from the fault code and the pattern, then test the parts that could produce it.

That means checking pressures, the fan and flue, the gas valve, the ignition and flame sensing, the pump and the condensate route. Parts are only discussed once the cause is proven, so you are not paying for guesses.

The fixed diagnostic

A Gas Safe diagnostic costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. It covers attending, diagnosing and any minor work needing no parts, with up to one hour on site.

Agree to the repair while we are still there and £70 of the diagnostic is deducted from its cost. Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out, all given to you before we set off.

If the boiler is due a service, it can be added while we are there for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT).

From back boilers to combis

The original New Town houses were mostly heated by solid fuel, many with a slow burning living room fire, a back boiler and radiators. Most have long since been converted to gas, but some of the original pipe runs can survive behind later boilers.

Pipework laid out for a back boiler and then reconnected to a modern boiler can have awkward routes and dead legs where sludge settles. When a boiler overheats or locks out in one of these houses, we look at the circuit as well as the appliance.

The Ryde’s courtyard houses were built with underfloor heating. There, a fault can sit in the manifold, the mixing valve or the pump rather than the boiler itself.

What we check before giving a price

The make, model and age of the boiler, whether parts are still made, and whether the heat exchanger is sound. One failed component on a healthy boiler is a repair. Several on a tired one is a conversation.

We also look at the system water and the circulation, because a new part will not cure a boiler starved of flow by sludge. The repair price comes after that, and nothing is fitted until you have agreed it.

If the job turns out bigger than it first looked, for example a leak behind the boiler as well as the fault you called about, the engineer stops and prices the extra work before going further.

What you can try first

Pressure

With the system cold, the gauge usually wants to sit between 1 and 1.5 bar, but follow your manual. Topping up through the filling loop is fine to do yourself.

Power and controls

Check the fused spur beside the boiler, the programmer and the thermostat. A surprising number of calls turn out to be a timer knocked off or a thermostat turned down.

Frost

After a hard frost, warm water poured along the outside condensate pipe often clears it. Past that, stop: the casing and the gas side are Gas Safe work only.

Old Hatfield boilers

In Old Hatfield, the historic core the New Town plan left alone, some buildings are listed. Moving a flue terminal or a condensate pipe on a listed frontage can need consent, and we tell you before any work starts rather than afterwards.

Inside, where a new pipe run is needed, we look first at existing service routes and later additions rather than cutting into original fabric. It can take a little longer, and it protects a building you are responsible for.

Repair or replace

We repair all makes, and we would rather fix a sound boiler than sell you a new one. When a major part fails on an older boiler, parts are no longer made or scale has done real damage, you get both prices side by side.

A replacement swap starts from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old boiler removed and the warranty registered for you. Our Hatfield boiler installation page explains what is included.

Frequently asked questions

Affinity Water’s 2025 report for zone AF023, Hatfield and Potters Bar, gives 280 mg/l as calcium carbonate from one sample, classed as hard.

If you go ahead with the repair during the diagnostic visit, £70 of the £150 + VAT diagnostic comes off the repair price.

Yes. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, plus Worcester Bosch, but repair all common makes.

Often it is. If it has several failing parts or heavy scale damage, we tell you plainly and show you both costs.

A genuine engineer carries a Gas Safe card with their face on it and a list of the gas work they are qualified for. Ours work under registration 956889.

Yes. We check the manifold, mixing valve and pump as well as the boiler, since the fault is not always in the boiler.

On a combi it is often scale in the plate heat exchanger, or a diverter valve sticking. Both are repairable.

Once, after writing down the fault code. If it locks out again, there is a fault that needs finding.

Our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.

Turn the boiler off, catch the water and call us. It is often the pressure relief valve or a failed seal, and the casing should only come off for a Gas Safe engineer.

Yes, particularly where a back boiler system was later converted. We test the circuit before blaming the boiler.
