Boiler Repair in Hemel Hempstead

Boiler Repair in Hemel Hempstead

Three water zones, one town

Affinity Water supplies Hemel Hempstead through more than one supply zone, and its own 2025 reports give different figures for each. The Hemel Hempstead zone is 283 mg/l as calcium carbonate, Hemel and Kings Langley is 305 mg/l, and Hemel and Potten End is 320 mg/l.

On Affinity’s scale, 283 is hard and the other two are very hard. The reports do not say which neighbourhoods fall in which zone, and each figure comes from a single sample, so we do not guess which one your street is on.

What matters for your boiler is that all three sit well above 200 mg/l, the level at which Building Regulations guidance says the supply to a combi should be treated.

What scale does inside a boiler

Scale forms wherever water is heated. On a combi that is the plate heat exchanger for the taps, which is why hot water that swings between hot and lukewarm is so often a scale fault here. In the main heat exchanger it shows as kettling, a rumble or bang as the boiler fires.

Caught early, a descale or a new plate usually puts a combi right. Left for years, scale shortens the life of pumps, valves and the heat exchanger itself.

Faults we find most

These are the complaints we hear across HP1, HP2 and HP3. Several share a root cause, which is exactly why we find the fault before we fit anything.

No heating while the boiler appears to be on

Heating works, hot taps stay cold

Pressure below 1 bar and falling

A lockout that returns after every reset

Kettling, banging or a pump that whines

A condensate pipe frozen after a cold night

Give us the make, model and any fault code when you ring. It helps the engineer arrive with the right parts on a fully stocked van.

Cold radiators in Grovehill and Woodhall Farm

Grovehill was started in 1967 and Woodhall Farm followed in the mid to late 1970s. Around St Agnells Lane, Washington Avenue, Cambrian Way and Henry Wells Square, homes of that era are where we find microbore heating pipe most often.

Microbore works, but it silts up faster than standard pipe, so a cold radiator here is more often a circulation problem than a faulty valve, and bleeding it will not help. If sludge is the cause, a power flush in Hemel Hempstead may be the answer, but we test the water first and say so if it is not.

Original systems in the first neighbourhoods

Adeyfield, Bennetts End and Chaulden were the first neighbourhoods of the new town, and some homes still carry pipework and cylinders from that era. Pinholes, tired valves and worn cylinders often show up at the same time.

A boiler that keeps losing pressure, or hot water that runs out quickly from a cylinder, may be down to those parts rather than the boiler. We check the whole system before recommending anything.

Home checks and the line you do not cross

A handful of checks are safe for anyone and sometimes save a visit altogether.

Thermostat and programmer calling for heat, especially after a power cut

Pressure gauge around 1 to 1.5 bar cold, topped up through the filling loop if you know how

The outside condensate pipe thawed with warm, not boiling, water

A single reset, following the manual

That is where home checks end. Taking the casing off or working near the gas side is Gas Safe work, legally and for good reason. Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before they start.

Diagnosed properly before anyone quotes

A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.

The diagnostic, priced up front

Every boiler fault starts with a fixed Gas Safe diagnostic at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). It covers attendance, diagnosis and minor work without parts, for up to one hour on site.

If the repair goes ahead on the same visit, £70 of that fee comes off the repair. The repair is priced for you before a spanner is picked up.

Outside weekday hours, gas work costs £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, on top of the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) out of hours call-out.

What we look at before quoting

Getting a boiler to relight is not the same as fixing it. The engineer checks the gas supply and pressure, the flue, the stored fault codes, the system pressure and expansion vessel, and the condition of the heat exchanger, then works out why it failed.

Only then are you told what has gone wrong, what it costs to fix and whether the boiler is worth fixing. If something else turns up during the repair, the engineer stops and prices it with you.

Repair or replace

We repair all makes, and most faults are worth repairing. We suggest replacement only when the heat exchanger has failed, parts are unavailable or the repair cost makes no sense against a new boiler.

A new boiler costs from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and most standard replacements can go in the next day, subject to survey. See boiler installation in Hemel Hempstead.

A replacement includes taking the old boiler away and registering the new one’s warranty for you, with up to 12 year manufacturer guarantees on selected models. You get the repair figure and the replacement figure side by side and decide.

Gas Safe, makes and guarantee

Our registration is 956889, and every engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card. They are our own staff, not subcontractors.

We work on all the common makes, including the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we fit, and labour on every repair is guaranteed for 12 months.

When the job is done, the engineer explains what failed, what was replaced and anything else they noticed that you may want to keep an eye on. If the same fault returns within the guarantee period, ring us.

Frequently asked questions

It is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), and £70 comes off the repair if you go ahead on the same visit.

In homes with microbore pipe, silting is a common cause. It can also be a valve or air, and we check which.

Affinity Water’s three zones here read 283, 305 and 320 mg/l, so hard to very hard depending on the zone.

Affinity’s reports do not say which neighbourhoods each zone covers, so we do not guess. All three are well into hard water.

Yes, including Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch, which are the makes we fit.

On a combi, scale on the plate heat exchanger is the usual cause in water this hard. A diverter valve is the other suspect.

It is the rumble or bang a boiler makes when scale or sludge stops water flowing properly over the heat exchanger. In Hemel water, scale is often behind it.

Yes. When a repair makes little sense against the age and condition of the boiler, we give you both prices.

Once, following the manual. If it locks out again, there is an underlying fault that needs a Gas Safe engineer.

Yes. Our registration is 956889, and each engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card.

Yes, the labour is guaranteed for 12 months.
