HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Boiler stopped in Henlow? Our own Gas Safe engineers find the cause on a fixed fee, show you what has failed and price the repair before touching it. All makes, village and Henlow Camp alike.

The same handful of symptoms account for most of the repairs we carry out across the parish:
Hot water fading or surging: often scale in a combi’s plate heat exchanger
Kettling: hot spots on a scaled or starved main heat exchanger
Radiators cold in places: sludge, a stuck valve or blocked microbore
Pressure creeping down: a weeping joint, a tired expansion vessel or the relief valve
Lockouts: ignition, flame detection, the fan or the flue
Frost lockouts: a frozen condensate pipe outside
Note the fault code and what the boiler did before it stopped. It shortens the diagnosis.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
A boiler that locks out is protecting itself. Resetting it again and again treats the warning light rather than the fault, and with some faults it can make things worse.
Our engineers read the code and any stored history, test the part it points to and then the parts around it. A flame failure can be a gas valve, a sensor, a blocked flue or a condensate trap backing up, and each needs a different repair.
Before you get a price, the gas pressure, flue, condensate, system pressure and controls are all checked, so what you are quoted is the actual fault.
Henlow Camp grew over the best part of a century beside the RAF station, with some homes built as service family housing, so heating systems vary a great deal. We find microbore in one house and 15mm copper next door, and boilers squeezed into store cupboards.
Narrow microbore pipes block with sludge more easily, and a boiler in a tight cupboard takes longer to work on. Neither stops a repair, but we tell you when either is adding time or is the real cause.
When the radiators nearest the boiler are hot and those at the far end stay cold, that usually points to a restricted circuit rather than a failed boiler, and it changes what the right repair is.
In the conservation area around the High Street and the parish church, boilers and flues were often fitted into buildings never designed for them. A flue that needs moving, or pipework that runs under a solid floor, is planned with the building’s status in mind.
If a repair would change anything visible outside, we tell you before agreeing a plan, so you can check whether consent is needed from Central Bedfordshire Council.
Some of these older houses still run a regular boiler with a hot water cylinder and a tank in the loft. When the heating works but the hot water does not, the fault is as likely to be a cylinder thermostat or a motorised valve as anything inside the boiler, and we test those first.
We have not been able to confirm which company supplies each part of Henlow. Central Bedfordshire Council names two suppliers for the district without saying which serves the village, so we do not quote a hardness figure. Your bill names your supplier, and its website gives the published hardness for your postcode.
What we check on the day is the boiler itself. Scale in a combi’s plate heat exchanger shows as hot water that swings between hot and cold, and scale on the main heat exchanger shows as kettling.
Where your supplier’s figure is above 200 mg/l, Building Regulations guidance is to treat the water before it feeds a combi, and we will say whether a scale reducer is worth adding after the repair.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
The gauge should read roughly 1 to 1.5 bar cold. Top up through the filling loop if it is low, and check the timer and thermostat are calling for heat.
After a hard frost, pour warm water along the outside plastic condensate pipe and reset once.
Do not remove the casing or touch the gas side. That is Gas Safe work only, and you are entitled to see any engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before they start.
A boiler fault is looked at with a fixed Gas Safe diagnostic at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), which buys attending, diagnosing and minor work needing no parts, for up to an hour on site.
Have the repair done there and then and £70 of that fee comes off its price. Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the out of hours call-out, confirmed on the phone first.
Nothing beyond the diagnostic goes ahead until you have agreed the price.
We repair all makes, and a descale or new plate heat exchanger often gives a scaled combi years more life. A single failed part on a sound boiler is normally worth fixing.
When a boiler is worn on several fronts, with a leaking heat exchanger, scarce parts or repeated calls, we say so and give you both prices. New boilers start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old one removed. See boiler installation.
If the circuit rather than the boiler is the problem, a clean may be the answer, and our power flushing page explains how we decide.
One of our own engineers from Stevenage, Gas Safe registered under 956889, in a van stocked for common parts. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, plus Worcester Bosch, so we know those well, but we repair every make.
Once the boiler is running, the engineer checks heating and hot water and that the pressure holds. Our labour carries a 12 month guarantee, and if the boiler is due its service it can be added for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT). See boiler servicing in Henlow.
Where the cause was outside the boiler, such as scale, sludge or a failing control, you are told plainly what to watch for, so the same fault does not bring the engineer back next winter.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
Scale in the plate heat exchanger is the usual cause. A descale or a new plate generally sorts it.
The diagnostic is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). Agree to the repair during that visit and £70 is deducted.
Yes. We will tell you whether cleaning or replacing sections is the better fix.
Yes, across rented homes in Henlow, Henlow Camp and the nearby villages.
It is usually safe for a short time, but the noise means the heat exchanger is under stress. Get it looked at before a cold week.
Once or twice is fine. If it keeps locking out, stop and call a Gas Safe engineer.
We have not confirmed the supplier for every part of Henlow, so we do not quote a figure. Your supplier publishes hardness by postcode.
Often, but anything visible outside is planned with the conservation area in mind, and you may need to check consent with the council first.
The vans carry common parts. If an older model needs something harder to find, we tell you before ordering.
Yes. We work on combi, system and regular boilers, and we test the cylinder controls as part of the diagnosis.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. Ours all work under registration 956889.
