Boiler Repair in Hoddesdon

Faults behind most EN11 boiler calls

No heat or no hot water

Pumps, diverter valves, motorised valves and controls cause most of these. In hard water, a scaled plate heat exchanger on a combi is a regular reason for hot water that fades or swings.

A falling gauge

Pressure that drops points to a leak on the system, a relief valve letting by or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge.

Lockouts and codes

Ignition, flame sensing, the fan, the flue or a blocked condensate line. Each has its own code, but the code is where diagnosis starts, not where it ends.

Rumbling, or dead after a frost

Kettling is the rumble of water boiling against scale. In a freeze, an outside condensate pipe can ice up and shut the boiler down until it thaws.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

Thames Water, and what hard water does

Hoddesdon’s water comes from Thames Water rather than Affinity, and it is hard. Thames publishes hardness for each supply zone, and you can check your own postcode on its website. What matters for your boiler is that scale is a steady cause of the faults above.

Scale collects wherever water is heated. On a combi that is the plate heat exchanger first, which is why the shower starts to wander, then the main heat exchanger, which is where kettling comes from.

Building Regulations guidance puts the line at 200 mg/l: above that, water feeding a combi ought to be treated. If we are replacing a scaled part for the second time, we will recommend scale protection on the incoming main so you are not paying for it a third.

Microbore, sludge and the rebuilt centre

Flats from the 1960s and 1970s rebuild of the town centre often have microbore heating pipe. It silts up faster than standard pipe, and a boiler pushing against a sludged system overheats and locks out. Cold patches at the bottom of radiators are the usual early warning.

So the answer is sometimes a flush rather than a part. We test the system water first, and our power flushing in Hoddesdon page explains when it is worth doing and when it is not.

Finding the fault properly

Getting a boiler to relight by pressing reset is not the same as fixing it. Our engineer reads the fault history, checks gas pressure and combustion, and tests the suspect part before anything is ordered.

In the older High Street buildings, heating has been added and rerouted over generations, and solid walls hide pipework on unexpected routes. Working out how the system is laid out is part of the diagnosis there, not an extra.

If the fault only shows at certain times, such as first thing in the morning or while a bath is filling, tell us. Details like that save time on site.

Safe checks before you call

Before you ring, it is safe to look at:

The pressure gauge, against the figure in your manual

The programmer, timer and room thermostat settings

The fused spur, and whether your gas hob lights

The outside condensate pipe, in freezing weather

Anything beyond that, including taking the casing off, is Gas Safe work. A lockout that returns after one reset is a reason to stop and call, not to keep pressing.

Fixed-fee diagnosis

A Gas Safe diagnostic in Hoddesdon costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). The fee is fixed and covers attending, diagnosing and minor work that needs no parts, for up to one hour on site.

Carry on with the repair on the same visit and £70 of that fee comes off. Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out, all set out on our pricing page.

Diagnosed properly before anyone quotes

A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.

Is it worth repairing

Most boilers are, and we work on all makes. When a boiler is old, needs a major component or keeps failing because of scale, we put a repair price and a replacement price side by side.

New boiler swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old boiler taken away and the warranty registered for you. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, also Worcester Bosch.

Inside the town centre conservation area, a new flue position may need thought under Broxbourne Borough Council’s rules, so we raise that at survey rather than on the day.

Newer boilers at High Leigh

Boilers in the newer homes at High Leigh Garden Village are often still under the manufacturer guarantee. If yours is, ring the manufacturer first, because a repair by anyone else can complicate a claim.

If the guarantee has lapsed, or the fault falls outside it, the diagnostic works exactly as it does for any other boiler. Newer boilers still suffer from hard water, so a combi at High Leigh can scale up just like an older one.

What is checked before you get a price

Before a repair price is given, the engineer has confirmed the fault rather than guessed it. That usually means:

Gas pressure at the appliance, standing and working

A combustion reading taken at the flue

The suspect part tested, not just the code read

System pressure, pump and valves outside the boiler

The price then covers the part, the fitting and a final test, and you decide before anything is ordered.

After the repair, and who does it

Once the new part is in, the engineer fires the boiler on heating and then hot water, checks combustion again and shows you what changed.

If the boiler has gone more than a year without a service, adding one while the case is already off costs £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) and takes about thirty minutes.

Frequently asked questions

It is hard, and over the years it scales heat exchangers, which leads to kettling and unsteady hot water.

The visit itself, finding the fault and any small job that needs no parts, with up to an hour on site. It is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT).

£70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair when it is done on the same visit.

More often it is sludge in the radiators and pipework. The diagnostic establishes which before any part is ordered.

Yes. If yours is still under a manufacturer guarantee, we will tell you whether the maker should be your first call.

Ask for the Gas Safe ID card and look at the categories on the back. Our business is registered under 956889.

All makes of gas boiler, not only the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch models we install.

Yes, when it cannot wait until morning. Gas work out of hours costs £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, with the call-out on top, and you hear it all first.

Our labour on every repair is guaranteed for 12 months.

Usually scale in the plate heat exchanger or a diverter valve that is sticking. Both are common in hard water and both are repairable.
