Boiler Repair in Huntingdon

Common boiler faults in PE29

A handful of problems make up most repair calls in the town. Knowing which one you have speeds things up:

No heating or no hot water, including one working without the other

Pressure loss that needs topping up every few days

Lockouts with a fault code that keeps returning

Kettling, a rumbling or banging noise when the boiler fires

Frozen condensate pipes in cold snaps

Ignition failures on older floor standing boilers

Add noisy pumps and water dripping from under the boiler case, and that covers the great majority. We work on all makes and find the cause before recommending a part.

Get a fixed price before we start

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

Why we diagnose instead of resetting

Pressing reset until the boiler fires again hides the problem rather than solving it. The fault that caused the lockout is still there, and repeated resets can bury the code that would have told us what it was.

Our engineers read the fault history, measure what the boiler is doing and test the suspect part before changing it. That avoids the common trap of fitting a part that was not faulty and paying twice.

Take a boiler that fires, runs for a few minutes and then locks out. It could be a flame sensing fault, a partly blocked condensate trap, a failing fan or a flue problem. The symptom is the same; the repair and the cost are not.

How the diagnostic is charged

In Huntingdon the Gas Safe diagnostic is charged at a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). It includes attending, diagnosing and minor work not needing parts, up to one hour on site.

Go ahead with the repair on the same visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair price. You always have the repair price before work starts.

Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour after, plus the out of hours call-out, all confirmed first. See the pricing page for every rate.

Checked before a price is given

Gas and flue

Inlet gas pressure, ignition, flame stability and combustion readings, with the fan and flue checked for blockage or damage.

The water circuit

System pressure, the expansion vessel charge, the pump, the diverter or motorised valves, and signs of sludge or scale.

Controls

The fused spur, timer, room thermostat and wiring centre, because a dead control can look exactly like a dead boiler.

The part itself

Once a suspect part is identified it is tested, not assumed. You then get a price for the repair, with the £70 credit shown if you go ahead there and then.

Hard water and what it does

We could not confirm from the supplier which company serves every Huntingdon address, so we do not quote a hardness figure. Anglian Water, whose head office is in the town, says water across the East of England is likely to be hard, drawn from chalk and limestone groundwater.

Hard water forms scale wherever it is heated. On combis it chokes the plate heat exchanger and makes hot water weak or erratic. On any boiler it coats heat transfer surfaces and causes kettling.

Guidance under the Building Regulations says water over 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi. Your boiler paperwork may also set out water treatment the manufacturer expects, so have it handy when we visit.

Older systems in the town

In the older centre, and in some houses around Newtown and the Priory area, back boilers and floor standing regular boilers still turn up. They can often be kept going, but parts and safety checks need care.

Oxmoor, built in the 1960s, is the era of microbore pipework, original cylinders and gravity primaries. Faults on these systems are often in the pipework, pump or cylinder rather than the boiler itself, which is why we look at the whole circuit.

Where sludge is the problem, a power flush from £595 + VAT for up to five radiators can help, but we check the water first and say plainly when a flush is not what is needed.

What is safe to check first

Check the pressure gauge, the fused spur and the thermostat and timer settings. On a frosty morning, look at the condensate pipe outside for ice and pour warm water along it if it is frozen. A single reset, if the manual allows, is fine.

Stop there. Taking off the casing or touching the gas valve, burner or flue is gas work, and only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally do it. When you ring, note the fault code, what the boiler was doing when it stopped and whether it has happened before.

Repair or replace

If one part has failed on a boiler that is otherwise sound, we will usually recommend the repair. We are not in the business of talking people into boilers they do not need.

If the heat exchanger is heavily scaled, an old back boiler is failing its checks or faults are becoming regular, we show you both costs side by side and leave the decision with you.

New boilers start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT). We mostly fit Vaillant and Ideal, as well as Worcester Bosch, remove the old one and register the warranty, and next day installation is available on most standard replacements, subject to survey.

The engineer at your door

Every engineer is employed by us and carries a Gas Safe ID card under our registration, 956889. Ask to see it, and check the back for the appliance categories they hold.

When the repair is done, the boiler is run on heating and hot water and the pressure checked before the engineer leaves. The labour carries a 12 month guarantee, and anything else we noticed is priced separately for you to consider.

Frequently asked questions

Scale on the heat exchanger traps pockets of water that boil, making the rumbling sound known as kettling.

Yes, we diagnose and repair them where it is safe to do so, and give honest advice if replacement makes more sense.

If you go ahead with the repair on the diagnostic visit, £70 of the £150 + VAT diagnostic comes off the repair.

Pour warm, not boiling, water along the outside section of the plastic pipe, then reset the boiler. A pipe that freezes every winter usually wants rerouting indoors or replacing with a wider, lagged run.

No. Inside the casing is gas work, which by law only a Gas Safe registered engineer may do.

All the common makes. We install mostly Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch too, but repair far more than those.

We have no supplier figure we can confirm for the town. Anglian Water says the East of England is likely to have hard water, and we treat it that way.

Often not. Cold bottoms usually mean sludge in the radiators or pipework, which we check before blaming the boiler.
