Boiler repair in Knebworth by our own Gas Safe engineers. A fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) diagnostic finds the fault, with £70 off if you go ahead with the repair on the spot.

Either can be a failed component, a thermostat or programmer fault, or a valve stuck in one position. We test before replacing anything, so you are not paying for guesses.
If the gauge keeps dropping, water is getting out. The usual suspects are the pressure relief valve, the expansion vessel, a radiator valve or a joint under a floor.
Repeated lockouts are the boiler reporting a problem with ignition, flame detection or overheating. Kettling, a rumble of water boiling inside the heat exchanger, points to flow restricted by sludge or scale.
After a hard frost the boiler locks out and gurgles because the plastic pipe outside has frozen. We can thaw it, then reroute or upsize the pipe so it stops happening every winter.

Affinity Water’s own report for its Knebworth and Tewin zone (AF015) gives a 2025 mean total hardness of 295 mg/l as calcium carbonate, from 48 samples ranging between 263 and 350.
That sits just inside Affinity’s hard band, which runs from 151 to 300, with the highest samples tipping into very hard. For comparison, the Stevenage zone mean is 320 mg/l. The Building Regulations guidance threshold for treating a combi’s feed is 200 mg/l, and Knebworth is comfortably above it.
So scale still matters here, just a little less than in some neighbouring towns. It gathers on a combi’s hot water plate first, and hot water that surges and fades is often the first sign.
A combi that heats the radiators happily but gives lukewarm or surging water at the taps usually has one of two faults: a diverter valve that is sticking, or a plate heat exchanger narrowed by scale.
The two feel the same from the kitchen sink, and the parts cost very different amounts. That is why the engineer checks flow and temperature across the plate before ordering anything, rather than swapping the likelier part and hoping.
Look at the pressure gauge, make sure the boiler has power and that the timer and thermostat are asking for heat, and check other gas appliances still work. If the condensate pipe outside has frozen, water from a kettle left to cool a little usually frees it.
After that, stop. The casing, the gas valve and any gas pipework are for Gas Safe registered engineers only, by law.
When our engineer arrives, ask to see the Gas Safe ID card. It shows their photo and what they are qualified to work on, and the firm itself is registered under 956889.
A boiler diagnostic is a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). That includes the visit, finding the fault and any minor fix needing no parts, within an hour on site.
Go ahead with the repair on the same visit and £70 of that comes off. Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour after, with the out of hours call-out on top. The pricing page sets it all out.
A reset clears a fault code without explaining it. The engineer checks gas pressure, flue and condensate, reads the boiler’s fault history where it keeps one, and tests the components involved.
Only then do you get a repair price, parts and labour included. Should the job grow once the casing is off, work pauses while the extra is priced for you.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
North Hertfordshire Council has three conservation areas in Knebworth: Old Knebworth, designated in 1969 and amended in 1990, and Deards End Lane and Stockens Green, both approved in 2008. Traditional materials there include timber framing, local red brick, clay tile, weatherboarding and some flint.
If a repair means a new pipe route or condensate outlet on a front elevation, it is worth checking with the council first, and we will tell you when that applies. In those houses we also find old gate valves that no longer close; swapping them during a repair makes the next job quicker.
Much of Knebworth grew after the station opened in 1884, when Lord Lytton’s Knebworth Garden Villages built the new streets. Heating in houses of that age has usually been added and altered over many decades, so pipework can be a mix of eras.
Where old circuits are shedding sludge into a new boiler, fixing the boiler alone rarely lasts. The engineer will tell you whether cleaning the system is worth it, and our power flushing page explains what that involves.
Whatever the badge on the front, we will look at it. The brands we fit most are Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch as well, so parts for those are familiar ground.
If one part has failed on a boiler that has otherwise been reliable, repair it. If it keeps breaking, parts are hard to find, or the repair is creeping towards the cost of a new boiler, we will say so. New boilers from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT) can usually go in the next day on a standard swap, subject to survey.
The decision stays with you. Boiler installation in Knebworth covers the replacement side.
Our repairs carry a 12 month labour guarantee. If the annual service is due, it can be done on the same visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), taking about half an hour.
Before leaving, the engineer explains what was wrong, what was done, and anything noticed that may need attention later. If the fault was caused by scale or sludge, you are told what would stop it coming back, and what that would cost, so the same repair is not needed again next winter.

A frozen condensate pipe is the usual reason. Rerouting it indoors or fitting larger lagged pipe stops it recurring.
It can depend on the house and the elevation. Check with the council, and we will tell you when it is likely to apply.
