BOILER REPAIR IN LUTON
Boiler repair
Boiler stopped working? We will find out why
No heating, no hot water, a boiler that keeps locking out, a fault code you cannot clear. We repair all makes and models across Luton, not only the ones we fit, and the van carries the parts that most commonly fail.
If you can, read us the make, the model off the badge and any code on the display when you ring. That often tells us on the phone whether it is a part we carry, one we can collect, or a boiler that is no longer worth the money.
If the display is blank, check the switch, the fuse and the programmer first. We have been out to a good number of dead boilers that turned out to be a tripped switch behind a cupboard door.
Common faults
The faults we see most often in Luton
No hot water, heating fine. On a combi usually the diverter valve or the plate heat exchanger, and in this town most often the heat exchanger.
Kettling, banging or whistling when the hot tap runs. Scale on the heat exchanger. The most common single complaint we get in Luton.
Locks out on a cold morning, works by lunchtime. Frozen condensate, almost always an external run that is undersized, unlagged or both.
Fires then cuts out after a minute or two. Commonly a flue or air pressure switch issue, a blocked condensate trap, or a fan on its way out.
Pressure dropping and needing topping up. A leak somewhere, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Topping up is not a fix.
Radiators cold at the bottom, boiler working hard. Sludge and magnetite, not a boiler fault.
288 to 345
mg/l across Luton’s four Affinity Water zones
Luton water is hard, and not evenly
Affinity Water publish four zones with Luton in the name, from 288 mg/l in Luton North to 345 mg/l in Stopsley, and three of the four sit above the 300 mg/l very hard line. A combi in Stopsley works harder on its plate heat exchanger than the same boiler in the north of town, which is why kettling is our most common repair here. When we replace a scaled exchanger we talk to you about a scale reducer on the mains at the same time.

On the visit
What actually happens on the visit
The free checks
An engineer arrives, protects the floor and the route in, and starts with the things that are free to check: the switch, the fuse, the programmer, the system pressure, the gas supply and whether the condensate is running. A surprising number of calls end there.
The proper readings
If the fault is inside the appliance the casing comes off: gas rate, working pressure, flue gas analysis where it applies, and the fault history off the board. A boiler that has locked out nine times in a fortnight is telling a different story from one that has stopped for the first time.
A fixed price, then your decision
You get a fixed price for the repair. If the honest answer is that the appliance is finished, you get that instead, with the replacement figure alongside it.
Worth knowing
Sludge, filters, and why a repair sometimes needs a flush first
Scale comes from the incoming mains and settles on the hot side. Sludge is generated inside the system as steel radiators corrode, and it collects at the bottom of radiators and in the boiler’s narrow passages. Fitting a new pump or heat exchanger into a system full of sludge gets you a repeat failure, and the manufacturer may decline the warranty claim.
Where we find it, we quote for dealing with it properly: a chemical flush, a full power flush, or simply a magnetic filter and inhibitor where the system is not far gone.
Repair or replace
Repair or replace, answered honestly
There is a point where putting a third part into an old boiler stops making sense, and we will tell you when you have reached it. As a rough guide, a single failed component on a boiler under about eight years old is almost always worth repairing. A heat exchanger or a gas valve on an appliance past twelve, with parts getting scarce, usually is not.
We give you both numbers and let you decide. A boiler swap starts from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT) if that is the route you take.
Brands
Which boilers we repair
All makes. We fit Vaillant ecoTEC plus and the Ideal Logic and Logic Max range most often, so we know those inside out, but the majority of our repair work is on other people’s installations: Worcester, Baxi, Glow-worm, Potterton, Vokera, Ferroli and the rest. Being a repair customer does not mean being sold a new boiler.
Back boilers and older systems in Luton
There is still a quantity of older stored hot water systems and the occasional back boiler behind a gas fire across the town. Parts for those are increasingly hard to come by. Where a part cannot be sourced, the conversation has to be about replacement, and removing a back boiler properly is a two day job.
So any back boiler repair is subject to the part still being available, and we check that before we quote rather than after.
The landlord gas safety check is not a repair
A CP12 gas safety record tells you an appliance is safe on the day it was inspected. It does not service the boiler and it does not fix a fault. If a tenant is reporting a problem, book the repair and we can issue the certificate at the same visit.
Prices
What a boiler repair in Luton costs
A Gas Safe diagnostic is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. That covers the engineer attending, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, up to an hour on site.
If it needs parts or more time, you get a fixed price for the repair before anything else happens, and if you go ahead on the same visit, £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair. Repairs are subject to parts availability, and we tell you if a part is on a lead time before you commit. Our own labour carries a 12 month guarantee, and any part we supply carries its manufacturer warranty.
Every rate is on our prices page.
Winter
No heating in winter is an emergency, and we treat it as one
A cold house with young children or an elderly resident is not a next week job. We run a genuine 24/7 line, answered by a person, 365 days a year, so if the heating fails on a Sunday night in January you are speaking to somebody that night.
If it is a boiler fault rather than a leak, turn the appliance off at the switch and leave it alone until we get there. Repeatedly resetting a boiler that is locking out for a reason does not help and occasionally makes the repair bigger.
Our approach
Casing off, readings taken, fault found
Gas rate, working pressure, flue gas analysis and the fault history off the board, then a fixed price before anything is replaced.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
My boiler is kettling and banging. Is that serious?
It is scale on the heat exchanger, water boiling locally and flashing to steam. It is the most common boiler complaint in Luton and it gets worse, not better. It is repairable, but in a zone running at 328 or 345 mg/l it is worth fitting scale protection at the same time.
Why does my boiler only lock out on cold mornings?
Almost certainly a frozen condensate pipe. The fix is the right diameter pipe, lagged properly, and run internally wherever possible. Thawing it gets you through the morning. Re-running it properly stops it happening every winter.
Do you repair boilers you did not install?
Yes, and most of our repair work is exactly that. All makes and models.
My pressure keeps dropping and I keep topping it up. Is that a problem?
Yes. Either there is a leak or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Every top up introduces fresh oxygenated water into the system, which feeds corrosion and sludge. It needs finding rather than managing.
Should I repair or replace my boiler?
Under about eight years old with one failed part, repair. Past twelve with a heat exchanger or gas valve gone and parts getting scarce, usually replace. We give you both figures and you decide. A swap starts from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT).
Can you come out today?
Often yes, and if it is no heating in cold weather we treat it as an emergency. We run a 24/7 line, 365 days a year.
How long does a boiler last?
A modern gas boiler serviced every year typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Past that, repairs get dearer and parts harder to find. Under ten years old with a single failed part, a repair is normally the right call.
How much does a boiler repair cost in Luton?
A Gas Safe diagnostic is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed, covering the visit, finding the fault and minor work with no parts for up to an hour. If parts are needed you get a fixed price first, and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair if you go ahead on the same visit.
Can you repair a back boiler?
Often, yes, but it is always subject to parts. Many back boiler parts are no longer made, so we check availability before we quote. If the part cannot be sourced, we price the replacement instead, and removing a back boiler properly is usually a two day job.
Do you charge a call-out fee in Luton?
Not between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside those hours there is a £50 + VAT call-out on top of the out-of-hours rate, and we tell you the cost on the phone before anyone sets off. Every rate is listed in full on our prices page.
