No heating, no hot water or a boiler that keeps locking out in Potton? A Gas Safe engineer finds the fault for a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), and you decide before work starts.

Most boiler repair visits in Potton and the SG19 villages come down to a handful of faults. The symptoms overlap, which is why a proper diagnosis matters before anyone orders a part.
No heat to the radiators while hot water still works
No hot water from a combi, often scale or a diverter valve
Falling pressure and a filling loop used every few days
Lockouts with a fault code and a reset that will not hold
Kettling, a rumbling or boiling noise as it heats up
Frozen condensate after a cold night, often with gurgling
Pressure loss usually means water is escaping somewhere, so we look at the valves and pipework as well as the boiler. A noisy pump or water dripping from the case are the other regulars.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
A reset that gets the boiler going again is not a fix. It gives the same fault another chance, and several resets in a row can make it harder to see what the boiler was reporting.
Our engineers read the fault history, take measurements and test the suspect part before replacing it. It takes a little longer than guessing, and it is far cheaper than paying for parts that were never the problem.
Consider a combi that fires, gets hot and then locks out after a few minutes. That could be a partly blocked condensate trap, a flame sensing fault, a tired fan or a flue issue. One symptom, four very different bills, which is why we test before we fit.
A diagnostic visit costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. It covers getting to you, finding the fault and any small job that needs no parts, with up to an hour on site.
If the answer is a repair and you want it done there and then, £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair bill. If a part has to be ordered, you have the diagnosis and a price before you commit.
For gas work in the evening, overnight or at the weekend, the first hour is £225 + VAT and each half hour after it £75 + VAT, with the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out on top. Every rate is on our pricing page.
Gas pressure, ignition and flame, and combustion readings
Fan, flue and condensate route for blockage or damage
System pressure and the expansion vessel
Pump, diverter and any motorised valves
Programmer, thermostats, wiring and the fused spur
Now and then the fault is simply a control that has stopped calling for heat. If that is all it was, we say so, and it is usually covered within the diagnostic.
Potton’s supply is described as hard, drawn from groundwater boreholes, and Anglian Water, the supplier generally named for the town, says hard water across its region comes from chalk and limestone. We could not get a supplier figure for SG19, so we do not put a number on it.
Scale collects where water gets hottest. In a combi that is the plate heat exchanger for hot water, which is why lukewarm or wandering shower temperatures are so common. In the main heat exchanger it causes kettling, water boiling in spots where flow has been choked.
Building Regulations guidance draws the line at 200 mg/l: water harder than that ought to be treated before it reaches a combi. After the repair we will tell you whether a scale reducer on the cold feed is worth fitting.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
A few things are safe for anyone to look at, and sometimes they solve it.
Pressure gauge: compare it with the normal range in your boiler manual
Power and controls: check the fused spur, the timer and the thermostat
Gas supply: see whether a gas hob lights, if you have one
Condensate pipe: in a frost, pour warm, not boiling, water along the outside section
That is where DIY stops. Anything behind the boiler casing, and any work on gas pipework, is legally for a Gas Safe registered engineer only, so please leave the cover on.
We repair all the common makes. Our engineers are directly employed and the vans carry the everyday parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit.
A boiler that needs one part is usually worth repairing. One that has had several expensive failures, or whose heat exchanger is badly scaled, is a different conversation, and we will say so plainly and leave the choice with you.
If replacing makes sense, new boilers start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT). We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, also Worcester Bosch, take the old boiler away and register the warranty for you. Most standard swaps can be fitted the following day, once surveyed.
Only engineers on the Gas Safe Register may legally work on your boiler. Ask to see the engineer’s ID card at the door, and check the photo and that the work categories on the back cover boilers.
Our registration number is 956889. In the conservation area, if a repair means moving a flue or condensate pipe on a street-facing wall, we raise any need for permission before starting.
The boiler is run through heating and hot water, the pressure checked and the old part shown to you if you want to see it. The engineer explains what failed and why, and points out anything else worth keeping an eye on, priced separately so you can decide later.
Labour on the repair is guaranteed for 12 months. If the boiler is due a service, it can be done while we are there for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes.

Yes. Scale builds in heat exchangers and leads to kettling and poor hot water, especially on combis.
Water is leaving the system through a weeping valve, the pressure relief valve or a small leak on the pipework. Topping up only hides it.
Once is fine. If it locks out again, leave it and call, because repeated resets can mask a fault.
Yes, and we will tell you honestly if parts for an old model are no longer worth chasing.
£70 of the diagnostic, as long as the repair is done on the same visit.
Mostly Vaillant and Ideal, with some Worcester Bosch. We repair all the common makes whoever fitted them.
Often, yes. Running it inside, or replacing the outside section with larger lagged pipe, usually stops the problem.
Yes, the labour is covered for 12 months.
On a combi in hard water, scale on the plate heat exchanger is the usual cause, though a sticking diverter valve can do the same. The diagnostic tells us which.
Not automatically. We set the repair cost beside a replacement from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT) and let you choose.
