HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
When a boiler stops in Royston, very hard chalk water or an ageing system is often behind it. A Gas Safe engineer finds the fault for a fixed fee and tells you plainly whether it is worth repairing.

Breakdowns across SG8 tend to fall into a handful of patterns. Knowing which one you have helps us bring the right parts.
No heating: cold radiators, often a pump, valve or thermostat fault
No hot water: heating works but taps run cold, common with combi diverter valves
Pressure loss: the gauge keeps falling below 1 bar
Lockouts: a fault code, and a reset that only works for a while
Kettling: banging or rumbling as water boils in the heat exchanger
Frozen condensate: a cold snap and a gurgling boiler that will not fire
Tell us the make, model and any code on the display when you call.

Affinity Water’s published report for its Royston zone (AF003) gives total hardness of 313 mg/l as calcium carbonate for 2025, with the mean, minimum and maximum all at that figure. Anything above 300 is usually treated as very hard. The neighbouring Buntingford and Therfield zone is harder still, at 375 mg/l.
That is a zone figure rather than a reading from your tap, but it explains much of what we find. Limescale gathers on the hot side of a combi’s plate heat exchanger, and the first sign is often hot water that runs warm, then hot, then warm again.
Scale in the main heat exchanger causes kettling and shortens the life of parts. Building Regulations guidance says water above 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi, which in Royston means a scale reducer is worth having.
Most sealed systems want roughly 1 to 1.5 bar on the gauge when cold. If it has dropped and you know the filling loop, top it up as the manual shows. If it keeps dropping there is a leak, and repeated topping up only hides it.
Check the thermostat is calling for heat and the programmer did not reset after a power cut. It sounds basic, yet it explains a fair share of calls.
In a hard frost, follow the white plastic pipe from the boiler to where it leaves the house. If it has frozen, pouring warm (not boiling) water along the outside section usually thaws it, and the boiler can then be reset.
Do not take the casing off. Anything inside the boiler, or anything touching gas, is work for a Gas Safe engineer only. You are entitled to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before they start.
A Gas Safe diagnostic costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). The price is fixed and covers attending, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, with up to one hour on site.
If you go ahead with the repair during that same visit, £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair. Nothing goes beyond what was agreed without a price.
Gas work at night or at the weekend is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour after it, and the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out is added. You hear all of that on the phone first.
A boiler that relights after a reset has not been fixed. The engineer checks the gas supply and pressure, the flue and condensate, reads any stored fault history, and tests the part the symptoms point to before naming it.
You then get one price for the repair, parts and labour. If something else turns up once work starts, the engineer stops and prices that too before going on.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Where the heating water is dark and radiators are cold at the bottom, the fault may be sludge rather than scale, and a new pump or valve on its own will not last.
A power flush in Royston may help, but we test the water first and tell you plainly if a flush is not what is needed.
We repair all makes, and fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, along with Worcester Bosch. The engineers are our own, never subcontracted, and the vans are fully stocked so common parts are usually on board.
In the conservation area around the old crossroads, flues and pipe runs in older and listed buildings can be awkward to reach. We plan for that before arriving so the time on site goes on the repair itself.
Most faults are worth fixing. A boiler with a failed fan, pump or diverter valve and a sound heat exchanger usually has plenty of life left.
Where a boiler is old, the heat exchanger is badly scaled or leaking, or parts are hard to get, we will say so and give you both prices. A replacement swap is priced from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and on a standard like for like job it can often be fitted the day after a survey.
We take the old one away and do the warranty registration. If replacing makes more sense, boiler installation in Royston sets out the options.
Our labour carries a 12 month guarantee, and the company is Gas Safe registered under 956889. Before leaving, the engineer explains what failed, what was fitted and anything else worth keeping an eye on over the winter.
If the yearly service is due, it can be added during the repair visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes and saves a second appointment.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
You pay a fixed diagnostic fee of £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). The repair is priced once we know the fault, and £70 of the diagnostic comes off if you go ahead on the same visit.
It contributes. Affinity Water’s Royston zone is published at 313 mg/l, which is very hard, and scale builds in heat exchangers over time.
Yes, once or twice as the manual describes. If it locks out again, stop and call, because repeated resets can hide a fault.
All of them. Most boilers we install are Vaillant or Ideal, and some are Worcester Bosch.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, which every registered engineer carries. Our business registration number is 956889.
On a combi in water at 313 mg/l, usually yes. Building Regulations guidance recommends treating water above 200 mg/l.
Check the condensate pipe outside. If it is frozen, warm water along it and one reset usually bring the boiler back.
We tell you, and give you a replacement price to compare with the repair.
Yes, our labour is guaranteed for 12 months.
Yes. Weekend gas rates are £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT a half hour, with the call-out charge on top.
In water this hard, usually scale on the plate heat exchanger. A sticking diverter valve can do the same, and the diagnostic tells us which.
Our Gas Safe engineers come out from Stevenage along the A505 and cover all of SG8, from the older centre around the priory crossroads to the later estates and the new homes planned off Newmarket Road and Baldock Road.
Royston Cave, carved into the chalk under the town centre and found in 1742, is a reminder of what the water runs through before it reaches your boiler.
Phone 01462 506 374 with the fault code. Diagnosis is a fixed £150 + VAT, and £70 comes back if you let us fix it there and then.
