HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Boiler not working in Sandy? Our Gas Safe engineers diagnose it for a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), take £70 off if you go ahead with the repair, and work on every make.

Radiators cold: a pump, diverter valve or control fault, or sludge
Hot water lukewarm: often scale in a combi’s hot water heat exchanger
Pressure dropping: a leak, a relief valve letting by or a flat expansion vessel
Locked out: a shutdown on ignition, flame detection or overheating
Kettling: scale or sludge choking flow through the heat exchanger
Stopped after a frost: an iced up condensate pipe
Dripping: water from under the casing
We find the cause first. Swapping parts until a fault goes away is the expensive way to fix a boiler, and we do not work that way. When you ring, tell us which of these you are seeing and any code on the display.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Anglian Water supplies Sandy and says that if you live in the East of England, you are likely to have hard water. Its own figure for Sandy was not available to us, and we do not quote numbers from other websites, so there is no figure on this page.
Your boiler will tell us more than a number would. Scale settles on the hottest surfaces, and in a combi the first sign is usually hot water that runs hot, then cool, then hot again. Left alone it can lead to kettling and a heat exchanger that needs replacing.
The Building Regulations guide for heating systems says water over 200 mg/l ought to be treated before a combi uses it. If scale is behind your fault, we tell you, and explain whether protection is worth adding after the repair.
A reset might get the heating going, but a lockout that keeps coming back is the boiler protecting itself. The fault history, ignition, flame sensing, fan, pump, expansion vessel and gas pressure are tested in turn until the failed part is clear.
The heating water is checked too. Sludge blocks heat exchangers and wears out pumps, so if it is part of the problem, a repair that ignores it may not last.
Only then is a price given, with each item separate if more than one thing is wrong.
Between Sunderland Road and St Neots Road, a 1970s house may well be on its second or later boiler, with parts of the original system still in use. We check what has been left behind from earlier systems before blaming the current boiler.
In the 1990s houses, a fault can sit in the controls, the pressure vessel or a pump as easily as in the boiler, so we test the whole system before naming a part.
On the High Street and Market Square, access is the challenge. In a listed building within the Sandy Conservation Area, a new flue or pipe route may need consent, and we tell you before, not after.
Several streets near the river, including Rivermead Gardens, Western Way and Nursery Drive, fall inside the government’s flood warning area for the Ivel at Sandy. If your boiler sits on a ground floor there, it is worth knowing how it would be isolated.
If flood water has reached a boiler, do not switch it back on. It needs checking by a Gas Safe engineer first, and some parts may need replacing.
Where a boiler has been flooded more than once, or sits where it is likely to be again, we will say so when pricing the repair. Whether to move it is your decision, and we only raise it so you can weigh it up.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Check the pressure gauge, the power supply and that the controls are calling for heat. If the display shows a fault code, write it down, as it helps us arrive with the right parts.
Press reset once. If the boiler locks out again, leave it alone. After a frost, warm water poured along the outside condensate pipe may clear a blockage.
Do not take the casing off or touch the gas valve or pipework. That work is limited by law to Gas Safe registered engineers, and ours will show you their ID card when they arrive.
Finding the fault costs £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. It covers the attendance, the diagnosis and any small job without parts, up to an hour on site.
If you choose to go ahead with the repair during that visit, £70 of the diagnostic is deducted. Out of hours gas work runs at £225 + VAT for the first hour then £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the out of hours call-out.
Giving us the make, model and fault code when you book means the engineer can bring the likely parts, which makes finishing the repair on the first visit more likely.
We repair all makes, and most of the boilers we fit are Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch as well. A single failed part on a sound boiler is usually a repair.
A boiler with a badly scaled heat exchanger and a history of faults may not be worth the money. We give you the numbers and let you decide. Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and boiler installation in Sandy covers the details.
Next day installation is available on most standard replacements, subject to survey, and the warranty is registered for you, with up to 12 years on selected boilers.
Before leaving, the engineer tests the boiler on heating and hot water and tells you what failed and why. Anything else that is wearing is pointed out and priced, but not touched without your say.
Repairs carry our 12 month labour guarantee. If a service is due, it can be done on the same visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes around thirty minutes.
Our engineers are employed by Vantage Plumbing and Heating Limited, based in Stevenage, rather than subcontracted, and each carries a Gas Safe ID card you can ask to see.

Often scale on the hot water heat exchanger, since Anglian Water says water in the East of England is likely to be hard. A Gas Safe engineer needs to confirm it.
Yes, our engineers repair all the common makes.
Sometimes not. We tell you plainly when repeated repairs are costing more than they are worth.
The boiler stops after a cold night, often with a gurgling sound and a fault code, because the pipe outside has frozen.
No. Leave it off until a Gas Safe engineer has checked it.
Not one we can stand behind. Anglian Water’s postcode checker gives the figure for your address.
Water is escaping somewhere or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Topping up helps for a while, but the cause needs finding.
When you go ahead with the repair on the same visit as the diagnostic. If you want time to think, the diagnostic stands at the full fixed price.
Only a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ask to see the ID card; ours are registered under 956889.
