HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Hard water and older heating systems are behind many of the boiler faults we find in Shefford. We diagnose for a fixed fee and give you a firm price before any repair.

Usually a pump, a motorised valve, the programmer or a room thermostat. On older systems with tanks in the loft, a frozen feed pipe after a cold snap can also stop things working.
Water that swings between hot and lukewarm often points to a scaled plate heat exchanger or a sticking diverter valve.
A sealed system losing pressure has a leak somewhere, perhaps a radiator valve, the pressure relief valve or inside the boiler, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge.
A boiler that locks out repeatedly, rumbles like a kettle or has a pump that whines is often struggling with scale on its heat exchanger or poor circulation.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
The council says Central Bedfordshire is supplied by two companies and does not say which serves Shefford. Third party mapping puts the town in a supply zone that its water company classes as very hard, but that link has not been confirmed by the company itself, so we do not quote a figure for your tap.
What we see in Shefford boilers is consistent with hard water. Scale builds inside heat exchangers, narrows waterways and makes parts work harder, and a combi’s hot water side usually suffers first.
Where water is above 200 mg/l, Building Regulations guidance calls for the combi feed to be treated. After a repair we will tell you whether scale reduction on the incoming main would help, and just as plainly when it would make no difference.
Condensing boilers drain a small amount of water outside through a plastic pipe. In a hard frost that pipe can freeze, the boiler backs up, and it locks out with a gurgling noise.
You can thaw an accessible outside pipe with warm, not boiling, water and then reset the boiler once. If it keeps happening, the pipe needs rerouting or upsizing, which we can quote for while we are there. Lagging alone rarely solves it on an exposed wall.
Many of the older houses still run a regular boiler with a cylinder and feed tanks in the loft. Faults there can come from the tanks, a sticking motorised valve or a pump rather than the boiler, so we test the system as a whole.
National guidance says homes built before 1970 may have a lead supply pipe. In the Victorian Gault brick houses and anything older, it is worth knowing, and we will mention it if we see one.
A few simple checks can save you a visit, and none of them means opening the boiler.
Pressure gauge reading between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold
Thermostat and timer both calling for heat
Power to the boiler and gas at the hob
Any fault code written down with the make and model
Stop there. Taking the casing off or touching anything on the gas side is for a Gas Safe registered engineer only, and a mistake can put carbon monoxide into the house. Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before they begin.
A boiler that has locked out has done so for a reason, and pressing reset until it lights only postpones the problem. Our engineers check the gas supply and pressure, the flue, the stored fault history and the system pressure before naming a part.
You are then told what has failed, why, and what the repair costs, before any part is fitted. If the fault only shows in a cold snap, or only when the heating and hot water run together, tell us, because it narrows the search.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
We charge a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) to attend, find the fault and do any minor work that needs no parts, with up to an hour on site.
If you want the repair done on that visit, £70 of the fee comes off the repair.
Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and then £75 + VAT per half hour, agreed on the phone first. Our pricing page sets out the rest.
The Shefford Conservation Area, designated in 1971, has around 27 Grade II listed buildings and the Grade II* church of St Francis of Assisi, with medieval timber frames such as 6 and 8 Northbridge Street and The Tudor House.
In buildings like these, a boiler and its flue were fitted wherever was allowed. A like for like repair avoids moving a flue on a protected wall, which is one more reason we repair where it makes sense. Where access is awkward, in a cellar or a tight cupboard, the engineer will tell you before starting if it will add time.
We repair all makes, from older regular boilers fed by loft tanks to the newest combis, and most faults are fixed with one part.
If the boiler is old and the part is expensive, we will price both a repair and a replacement so you can compare. Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and our boiler installation in Shefford page covers the options.
Most standard swaps can be fitted the next day, subject to a survey, with the old boiler taken away.
The engineer explains what failed, what was replaced and anything else worth watching. Our registration is 956889, and our engineers are our own, not subcontracted.
Our workmanship carries a 12 month labour guarantee, so if the same fault returns in that time, ring us. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, with some Worcester Bosch, but repair every common make, including older boilers where parts can still be found.

The diagnostic visit is a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). The repair is priced once the fault is found, with £70 off if we do it on the same visit.
Yes, all makes and ages where parts are still available. If a boiler is beyond sensible repair, we will say so.
The water is hard, and scale is a regular cause of combi hot water faults here.
Check the plastic condensate pipe outside. If it is frozen, thawing it with warm water and resetting once usually works.
Yes, once, using the reset button. If it keeps locking out, there is an underlying fault that needs an engineer.
Because the water company has not confirmed which zone supplies the town, and we only quote figures the supplier has published for your area.
Yes. We test the tanks, valves and pump as well as the boiler, because the fault is often in the system.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. Our registration is 956889.
Usually scale on the plate heat exchanger or a sticking diverter valve. Both are common in hard water and both can be repaired.
Yes, the labour is guaranteed for 12 months.
Our Gas Safe engineers repair boilers throughout Shefford and the SG17 district, travelling from Stevenage along the A600 in fully stocked vans.
