Boiler down in St Ives? We diagnose faults on all makes for a fixed fee, tell you plainly whether the repair is worth doing, and nothing beyond that happens without an agreed price.

Most boiler calls from St Ives fall into a handful of patterns, and several lead back to the water.
Radiators stone cold: pump, diverter, zone valve or a thermostat not calling
Taps running lukewarm on a combi: often a scaled plate heat exchanger
Gauge falling towards zero: a weeping joint, the relief valve or a flat expansion vessel
Repeated lockouts: ignition, flame detection or the flue
Kettling: a boiling, knocking noise as scale builds on the heat exchanger
Frozen condensate: the outside plastic pipe iced up in a frost
We repair all makes, not only the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we install.

St Ives is supplied by Cambridge Water from two zones fed by different reservoirs: the northern part of town from the Bluntisham zone and the southern part from the Coton zone. Cambridge Water’s published figure for Coton for 2025/26 is 317.8 mg/l total hardness, or 22.2 degrees Clark.
The Bluntisham page currently carries figures that do not agree with each other, so we are not quoting it until Cambridge Water confirms the correct number.
Inside a boiler, scale builds on the heat exchanger, which is where kettling comes from, and on a combi’s plate heat exchanger, where hot water starts running warm then cold. If the same part has failed twice, the answer is not a third identical part but scale protection on the incoming main.
Building Regulations guidance is that water above 200 mg/l total hardness should be treated before it feeds a combination boiler or water heater, to slow the build up of limescale. The Coton zone figure is well above that.
Some manufacturers make water treatment a condition of their warranty in hard areas, so check the terms before assuming a failed part is covered. If you have the boiler’s paperwork to hand, we will tell you what it says.
Many homes built as the town spread north still have microbore heating, gravity hot water or single feed cylinders. When 8mm or 10mm pipe silts up, radiators go cold, the boiler cannot shed its heat and locks out, and the boiler takes the blame.
That is why we diagnose before we replace anything. A new part on a blocked system fails again, and sometimes the real fix is a clean, explained on our power flushing page.
The fault code is where we start, not where we finish. The engineer reads it and any stored history, tests the component it points to and those around it, and checks the gas pressure, flue, condensate route and controls before giving you a price.
That way you pay for the part that has actually failed, not the one a code suggested.
A lockout after a frosty night is a good example. The code may point at ignition, but the cause is a frozen condensate pipe backing water up into the boiler, and no ignition part will cure that.
Compare the pressure gauge with the range in your boiler manual. Check the fused spur, the timer and the thermostat, and whether the gas hob lights.
After a hard frost, pouring warm, not boiling, water along the outside plastic pipe from the boiler and then resetting often clears it. If it keeps refreezing, the pipe run needs changing.
Never take the casing off. The gas valve, burner, fan and flue are Gas Safe work only, and tampering with them is dangerous and can void the warranty.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Every boiler fault visit is charged as a fixed Gas Safe diagnostic: £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) for getting to you, finding the fault and any small job that needs no parts, with up to an hour on site.
Say yes to the repair on the same visit and £70 of the diagnostic is knocked off it. You hear the fault and the cost before any work beyond the diagnostic starts.
Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT per half hour, with a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out, all confirmed on the phone first.
A boiler that has been looked after and has a failed fan or diverter valve is usually worth repairing. One that is out of warranty, kettling constantly and needing a heat exchanger is a different conversation, and we lay out both costs so you can decide.
If replacement makes sense, swaps start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old boiler taken away and the warranty registered. See boiler installation.
In the conservation area around Bridge Street, Church Street and The Broadway, boilers and cylinders are sometimes squeezed into the lowest available spot, and flues run through old walls. Any change to a flue outside there is planned with the conservation area in mind, and Huntingdonshire District Council is the authority to check with.
Where a boiler sits in a low ground floor room close to the river, we will raise its siting when it eventually needs replacing.
Anyone working on your boiler must hold a Gas Safe ID card. Ask to see it, and check the back for the categories of work the engineer is qualified to do.
Our engineers are our own employees, working under registration 956889, and our labour has a 12 month guarantee. A service can be added to a repair visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT). See boiler servicing in St Ives.
When the work is finished, the engineer runs the heating and hot water, checks the pressure holds and explains what failed and why, so you know what to keep an eye on.

Yes, all makes. Parts for some older models are harder to find, and we tell you if that applies before ordering.
In hard water the plate heat exchanger scales up, restricting flow and heat transfer. Descaling or replacing it, plus scale protection, usually cures it.
If your system has a filling loop and the manual explains it, yes. If the pressure keeps falling, a leak or failed part needs finding.
It pays for the engineer’s visit, finding the fault and any small fix that needs no new part, with up to an hour on site. The fee is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT).
It means the boiler is fighting scale or poor circulation. Get it checked soon, because it tends to get worse.
