Boiler repair in Walkern from our own Gas Safe engineers in Stevenage. A fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT) diagnostic finds the fault, and £70 of it comes off if the repair is done there and then.

No heating, often down to a pump, valve or control fault
No hot water from a combi, frequently linked to scale
Pressure that keeps dropping and needs refilling
Repeated lockouts showing a fault code
Kettling or banging as the boiler warms up
A frozen condensate pipe after a hard frost
Water dripping from the boiler case or the pipes below it
Most calls from Walkern fall somewhere on that list. A noisy pump grinding away in the airing cupboard is the other regular. We diagnose before replacing anything, because the wrong part fitted in hope is money wasted.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
If the boiler restarts after a reset, the fault has not gone. It has been hidden, and a run of resets can overwrite the history that would have told the engineer what went wrong.
Our engineers read the fault codes, take measurements and test the part they suspect before changing it. A boiler that lights and then locks out might have a sensor, fan, flue or condensate problem, and each of those costs something different to fix.
Pressure loss is the same. Topping up and hoping gives a slow leak more time to damage a ceiling or the boiler itself, so we check the relief valve, the expansion vessel and the visible pipework before blaming anything inside the case.
The diagnostic is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT). It covers attending, diagnosing and minor work that needs no parts, up to an hour on site.
Choose to go ahead with the repair on the same visit and £70 of the diagnostic is deducted. Where a part has to come from a supplier, the engineer leaves you the findings and a written price, and there is no pressure to decide on the doorstep.
Out of hours gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, with the call-out on top. Full detail is on our pricing page.
Gas pressure, ignition, flame and flue gas readings, with the fan and flue checked for blockage.
System pressure, the expansion vessel charge, the pump and the valves that switch between heating and hot water.
Timer, thermostats, wiring and the fused spur. A control that has stopped calling for heat looks exactly like a dead boiler.
Affinity Water’s own 2025 report for its Benington supply zone gives a hardness of 310 mg/l as calcium carbonate. Walkern is listed under that zone by a third-party source rather than by Affinity itself, so treat the figure as a strong guide rather than a reading from your tap.
That is well above the 200 mg/l level at which Building Regulations guidance says a combi’s cold feed should be treated. The scale that furs kettles does the same inside a boiler. On a combi the hot water heat exchanger clogs first, and hot water turns weak or erratic.
In the main heat exchanger it causes kettling and overheating lockouts. Clearing the fault is one part of the job. A scale reducer on the incoming main slows it coming back, and we will tell you if one is worth fitting.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Check the pressure, the power and the controls. If the boiler stopped after a frost and is gurgling, the condensate pipe outside may be frozen, and warm, not boiling, water poured over it often frees it. Press reset once only, and note any fault code.
Anything beyond that is Gas Safe work. Do not open the boiler or loosen gas fittings, and when an engineer arrives, ask to see the Gas Safe ID card before they start.
If water is dripping from the boiler, switch it off at the fused spur, put a tray or towels underneath and ring. Do not keep resetting a boiler that is leaking.
With fabric going back to the fifteenth century, many older Walkern houses had heating put in long after they were built. Pipe runs can be awkward and parts of the system may be decades old, so we look at the whole picture before recommending a repair.
On the estate north of the Stevenage Road, systems have often been altered more than once. Pressure loss there is worth tracing properly rather than simply topping up.
In a listed building or the conservation area, moving a flue or condensate pipe on an outside wall can need permission. If a repair involves that, we raise it before starting.
We repair every make, and the boilers we fit most are Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch as well. If the boiler has one fault and is otherwise in good order, repair makes sense.
If it is badly scaled, keeps failing or needs a major part, we will say plainly that replacing it could be better value. New boilers start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old one removed and the warranty registered for you. Next day fitting is possible on most standard replacements, subject to survey.
Our repairs carry a 12 month labour guarantee, and a service can be added on the same visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT).
The job is not finished until the boiler has been run through a full heating cycle and a hot water draw, with the pressure watched as it warms. Anything else noticed, such as a condensate pipe likely to freeze again, is priced separately.
Our engineers are directly employed by Vantage Plumbing and Heating Limited and registered under Gas Safe number 956889.
The engineer also shows you the part that came out if you want to see it, and tells you plainly whether the boiler is in good shape for the winter ahead or likely to need more attention soon.

Finding the fault costs a fixed £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), and any repair is priced before it goes ahead.
Affinity Water’s own 2025 report for the Benington zone gives 310 mg/l. The link between Walkern and that zone comes from a third-party source, so check your postcode with Affinity to be sure.
Usually a frozen condensate pipe where it runs outside. Warm water along it and one reset often gets it going again.
Yes, every common make is repaired. We fit Vaillant and Ideal most often, plus Worcester Bosch.
Not automatically. We will give you both options with honest costs and let you choose.
Go ahead with the repair on the diagnostic visit and £70 of the diagnostic comes off the repair bill.
No. Inside the casing is gas work, which by law only a Gas Safe registered engineer may carry out.
In water this hard it is usually scale in the plate heat exchanger. Descaling or replacing the exchanger normally cures it.
Yes, our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
Yes. If a repair involves changing anything on an outside wall, we raise any need for permission before starting.
It buys time, nothing more. Water is leaving the system through a valve, a joint or the boiler, and finding it early saves a ceiling.
Repairs throughout Walkern and its SG2 postcodes, including the High Street, the conservation area and the estate north of the Stevenage Road.
Homes along Benington Road and out towards the edges of the village are covered as well. For yearly upkeep, see boiler servicing in Walkern.
