Boiler not firing in Watford? Our own Gas Safe engineers diagnose all makes for a fixed fee and tell you straight whether it is a repair or the end of the road.

Affinity Water publishes two zone reports carrying the town’s name. For 2025, Watford North (AF046) was 323 mg/l as calcium carbonate and Watford South (AF092) was 353 mg/l. Both are well above the 300 mg/l level usually described as very hard.
Which streets fall in which zone is something Affinity Water can tell you for your own address. For your boiler it makes little difference: Building Regulations guidance says water above 200 mg/l should be treated before it feeds a combi, and both zones are far past that.
Scale on the main heat exchanger brings kettling and overheat lockouts, while scale in a combi’s plate heat exchanger gives hot water that swings from warm to cold. Replacing a scaled part without dealing with the water just resets the clock.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
What Watford callers describe, and what it usually points to:
Radiators cold but taps hot: diverter valve, pump or controls
Combi gives no hot water: diverter or plate heat exchanger
Pressure keeps sinking: leak, relief valve or expansion vessel
Repeated lockouts: ignition, flame sensing, flue or condensate
Kettling: scale or poor circulation in the boiler
Stopped in a frost: an iced-up condensate pipe
Those are starting points, not diagnoses. The engineer tests before replacing anything.
Watford’s housing is mixed. The 2021 census found 28.1% of households in semi-detached homes, 24.8% in terraces, 10.5% in detached houses and 28.8% in purpose-built flats. Older houses may still run a regular boiler with a loft tank and a cylinder, where the fault can sit in a motorised valve or cylinder thermostat rather than the boiler itself.
In flats, boilers are often in a kitchen cupboard with a flue through an outside wall or into a shared duct, and access for the engineer needs thinking about in advance. Tell us where the boiler is and how we get into the building when you book.
The pressure gauge against your manual, the programmer and thermostat, the fused spur, and whether other gas appliances work. One reset is fine, after writing down any fault code.
If the boiler stopped on a freezing morning, warm (never boiling) water poured along the outside plastic condensate pipe will often thaw it.
Casing, gas valve, burner, fan and flue are Gas Safe work only. Attempting them is dangerous and can void the manufacturer warranty.
Our Gas Safe diagnostic is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), covering attendance, diagnosis and any minor work without parts, for up to one hour on site. Go ahead with the repair on the same visit and £70 of that is taken off the repair.
After 5pm and at weekends, gas work is £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, with the £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out added. See pricing for the full list.
A reset makes the fault code disappear, not the fault. The engineer checks gas pressure, flue and condensate, reads any fault history the boiler keeps, and tests the component the symptoms point to.
Only then is the repair priced, parts and labour together. Nothing past that price happens without your agreement, and if the job changes once the casing is off, the engineer stops and prices it again.
A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.
Where a boiler has been replaced onto old pipework, the heating water can carry years of sludge. The giveaways are radiators cold along the bottom, a pump that grinds and a boiler running too hot.
Sometimes the right answer is a flush, sometimes simply balancing the radiators or cleaning a filter. We test the water first, and power flushing in Watford explains when a flush is worth it.
Kettling is the rumble or bang of water boiling where scale has narrowed the heat exchanger. The boiler senses the heat, shuts down and locks out, then relights and does it again. Left alone, it wears the heat exchanger and the pump.
On a combi, the plate heat exchanger for the taps usually scales first, because it heats cold mains water directly. Descaling or replacing the plate cures the symptom, and a scale reducer on the supply is what stops it coming back within a winter or two in water at 323 or 353 mg/l.
Most Watford breakdowns are worth repairing, whatever the make. We say otherwise only when the numbers point that way: a major component on an old boiler, obsolete parts, or repeated failures caused by scale.
If replacing is sensible, a swap starts from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), and next day installation is available on most standard replacements, subject to survey. Removal of the old boiler and the warranty paperwork are part of the job.
Whoever you use, ask for the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before work starts. Our engineers carry theirs, and the company registration is 956889.
Our labour is guaranteed for 12 months. You are told what failed, what was fitted and whether the water or the system is likely to cause the same fault again, with a price for anything that would prevent it. Our engineers are directly employed, never subcontracted, and the vans are fully stocked with common parts.
If the boiler is due a service, it can be added to the repair visit for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes.

Not for your boiler. Both zones are very hard, at 323 and 353 mg/l, and the protection needed is the same.
If you go ahead with the repair on the same visit as the diagnostic, £70 of the diagnostic fee comes off the repair.
Yes. We repair all makes and system types, and we will tell you honestly if parts are no longer available.
Sometimes the controls are to blame, which is why we test before replacing parts. The diagnostic visit establishes which.
Ask for the Gas Safe ID card, which shows their photo and the work they are qualified for. We are registered under 956889.
Yes. If the repair cost is out of proportion to the age and condition of the boiler, we say so and give you the replacement figure to compare.
It is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed, for up to one hour on site.
No. Tell us where it is and how we get into the building, and we plan access before arriving.
Yes, our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
Most likely kettling: water boiling in a heat exchanger that scale or sludge has narrowed. Have it seen to before lockouts start.
Yes. At weekends gas work costs £225 + VAT for the first hour and £75 + VAT for each half hour after, plus the call-out.
