Boiler Repair in Wheathampstead

Wheathampstead’s tap water is very hard, and a good share of the boiler faults we see here start with scale. Ring 01462 506 374 for a fixed price diagnostic from our own engineers.

Boiler Repair in Wheathampstead

Faults we are called out for most

Most breakdowns in the village fall into a handful of patterns, and describing yours on the phone helps us bring the right parts.

No heating: radiators cold although the boiler shows power

No hot water: heating works but the taps run cold, often a diverter valve

Pressure loss: the gauge keeps dropping and needs topping up

Lockout: a fault code and a boiler that will not relight

Kettling: banging or rumbling as the water heats

Frozen condensate: a shutdown on the coldest mornings

Some of these are a quick fix and some mean a part, which is why we diagnose before we quote for anything. A noisy pump or water dripping from under the boiler belong on the same list.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

What the water does inside a boiler

Affinity Water runs a treatment works in the village, and third party mapping places Wheathampstead in its Harpenden supply zone, which Affinity’s own report classes as very hard. Affinity has not confirmed that zone for each AL4 address, so we treat it as a guide rather than a reading at your tap.

In a combi, hard water shows up on the hot water side first. Scale narrows the plate heat exchanger, the shower drifts from hot to lukewarm, and the boiler starts to kettle. Caught early it can often be cleared; left for years it tends to mean a new exchanger.

Treating the supply to a combi is what Building Regulations guidance recommends once hardness passes 200 mg/l. After a repair we will say whether a scale reducer is worth fitting.

Diagnosis before parts

A boiler brought back by the reset button is not a boiler that has been mended. Our engineers check the gas supply and pressure, the flue, the fault history, the system pressure and expansion vessel, and the heat exchanger before naming a part.

You are told what failed and why, and given the repair price, before anything is fitted. If something else turns up once work has started, the engineer stops and prices it with you. A fault that only appears in cold weather, or only when heating and hot water run together, is worth describing in detail when you ring.

What you can check before you ring

Look at the pressure gauge. Most sealed systems want around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, and if it has dropped you can top it up using the filling loop your boiler manual describes. Check the timer, the thermostat and the fused spur switch, then try one reset.

In a hard frost, if the display points to a blocked condensate, find the plastic pipe where it leaves the house and pour warm, not boiling, water along it.

That is where it stops. Taking the casing off, touching the gas valve, burner or flue, or anything on the gas side of the boiler is Gas Safe registered work only, however tempting a video makes it look.

Finding the fault for a fixed fee

The diagnostic

Our Gas Safe diagnostic is £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), fixed. It covers attending, finding the fault and any minor work that needs no parts, with up to one hour on site.

The credit

Say yes to the repair while the engineer is still there and £70 of the diagnostic is knocked off it.

Evenings and weekends

Out of hours gas work is charged at £225 + VAT for the first hour, then £75 + VAT per half hour, plus the out of hours call-out. You hear the price on the phone first.

Diagnosed properly before anyone quotes

A fixed diagnostic price, all makes and models, and a straight answer on repair or replace.

Frost, lofts and condensate

Lofts under the steep clay tile roofs here get very cold, and a regular boiler with tanks or pipework up there can stop when a feed freezes. The condensate pipe outside is the other frost casualty, especially where it runs a long way before reaching a drain.

If the condensate freezes every winter, a larger or rerouted pipe is the lasting fix, and we can price it on the same visit. Lagging on its own rarely solves it where the pipe runs along an exposed wall.

Older houses and conservation areas

Wheathampstead, Amwell and Gustard Wood are all conservation areas, and Amwell alone has five Grade II listed buildings. In houses like these a boiler flue was often squeezed into whatever position was allowed, so a like for like repair can avoid a difficult new flue position.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate’s guidance is that pre-1970 homes may have lead supply pipes. If we see one while working, we will tell you.

Repair it or replace it

If a boiler has a single failed part and is otherwise sound, we repair it. If it is old, parts are getting hard to find and the heat exchanger is badly scaled, we will say so and explain why, so you can choose with the full picture.

Replacements start from £2,375 + VAT (£2,850 including VAT), with the old boiler removed and the warranty registered for you. Our boiler installation in Wheathampstead page explains how we plan it.

Next day installation is available on most standard replacements, subject to survey, but there is no pressure: you get both figures and decide.

All makes, and a card worth asking for

We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch too, but we repair all the common makes. The engineers are our own staff rather than subcontractors, and the vans are stocked for the usual failures.

Anyone working on your boiler should show you a Gas Safe ID card. Ours carry registration number 956889. Once the repair is done, our labour is guaranteed for 12 months, and the engineer explains what failed and what was replaced before leaving.

Frequently asked questions

The supply zone third party mapping links to the village is classed very hard by Affinity Water. Over time that scales the heat exchanger, especially on the hot water side of a combi.

The diagnostic is fixed at £150 + VAT (£180 including VAT), covering up to one hour on site. If you have the repair done on the same visit, £70 comes off it.

Yes, one reset using the button on the front is fine. A repeat lockout is the point to stop and ring a Gas Safe engineer.

Yes, we work on all the common makes, not only the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we install.

It is the banging or rumbling a boiler makes when scale or sludge stops the water moving properly over the heat exchanger. In very hard water, scale is often the cause.

Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card before work starts. Ours show registration number 956889.

Water is escaping from the sealed system, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Finding which is part of the diagnostic.

A frozen condensate pipe is the usual cause. Warm, not boiling, water along the outside run and a single reset normally bring it back, and a rerouted pipe stops it happening again.

Yes, the labour carries a 12 month guarantee.

On a combi in very hard water, scale on the plate heat exchanger is the usual cause. A sticking diverter valve is the other suspect, and both can be repaired.
