Chalk spring water at 318 mg/l leaves scale in every Baldock boiler. An annual service by a Gas Safe engineer catches it early, proves the boiler is safe and keeps the guarantee valid.

The engineer asks how the boiler has been behaving, looks at the pressure, the controls and the flue terminal outside, and checks for any sign of leaks or scorching around the case.
With the casing off, the burner is checked and cleaned where needed, and the heat exchanger is inspected for scale and debris. Electrical connections and ignition are looked over.
The condensate trap is emptied, cleaned and refilled so it drains freely. Seals and gaskets that keep combustion gases inside the case are checked for wear and damage.
A flue gas analyser measures what the boiler is actually producing, which is the only reliable test of safe combustion. The readings, what was checked and anything to watch go on a written record for you.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
A proper service ends with a written record: the boiler make and model, the flue gas readings, the checks carried out and any recommendations. If a visit ends with nothing in writing, it is hard to prove it happened, and harder still to show a manufacturer that the boiler was looked after.
Keep the record with the boiler’s paperwork. It is what a manufacturer asks for when a claim is made, and it is useful to the next buyer if you ever sell the house. Landlords receive the gas safety record as a separate document if the CP12 check is done on the same visit.
A standard annual service is £99 + VAT (£118.80 including VAT). The written record and the flue gas analysis are part of it, not extras.
Where an engineer is already in the house mending something, bolting the service onto that visit costs £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) and adds about thirty minutes. How long a standalone service takes depends on the boiler and what is found, and the engineer will tell you before starting anything longer.
The Ivel starts from springs in Baldock, and the tap water comes from the same chalk. Affinity Water’s 2025 report for its Baldock and Letchworth zone (AF001) puts total hardness at 318 mg/l as calcium carbonate, with no variation between samples.
That is very hard water. Each time it is heated, a little calcium drops out onto the heat exchanger, and on a combi onto the plate that heats your taps. Over a few winters that turns into kettling, lukewarm showers and parts wearing early.
The service is when the engineer can see how far it has gone. We note it each year, so you can tell whether it is building faster than it should.
Guidance under the Building Regulations puts the treatment threshold for a combi feed at 200 mg/l, well below Baldock’s 318. Here that means a scale reducer on the cold supply to the boiler, and we check whether one is fitted and still working.
On the heating side, inhibitor slows corrosion inside radiators and the heat exchanger. We check it is present, and if the heating water is dirty we explain whether a power flush in Baldock would help or whether it is not needed.
A magnetic filter traps sludge before it reaches the boiler. If you have one, we clean it on the service. If you do not, fitting one is quoted separately.
Four reasons to keep the boiler on a yearly service:
Safety: poor combustion gives no reliable warning, and only the analyser shows it
Running costs: a clean burner and heat exchanger waste less gas
Warranty: most manufacturer guarantees depend on a yearly service record
Fewer breakdowns: worn parts get spotted in autumn rather than in January
Selected boilers we fit carry manufacturer guarantees of up to 12 years, and nearly all of them expect that yearly record.
Sometimes a part is worn but still working: a seal that has hardened, an ignition electrode past its best or a heat exchanger that is starting to scale. The engineer shows you, writes it on the record and prices the repair.
Whether it is done now or later is your call. If a fault makes the boiler unsafe to use, you are told clearly and why, and nothing is replaced without your agreement.
Casing off, burner and heat exchanger inspected, flue gas readings taken, and a written record of what we found.
If you cannot find a record from the last twelve months, it is overdue. Other clues include a yellow or lazy flame where you can see it, black marks around the case or flue, pressure that creeps down, a boiler louder than it used to be, and hot water that takes longer to arrive.
Any of these on its own is a reason to book rather than wait. Gas you can smell is another matter entirely: get out, then phone 0800 111 999.
Most buildings in the Baldock Conservation Area are listed, and a service involves no change to them. We take care with floors and finishes, and look closely at flue terminals on old walls to make sure they are secure and clear.
Landlords can have the annual gas safety check and record, the CP12, done on the same visit as the service, so the tenant only gives access once. Everything the check includes is listed on our landlord gas safety certificate page.
We service all the common makes of gas boiler: combi, system and regular. The ones we fit most are Vaillant and Ideal, with Worcester Bosch as well, so our engineers know those inside out, but the checks are the same whatever badge is on the front.
Older regular boilers with a tank in the loft and a cylinder in the airing cupboard get the same service, and the engineer will also glance over the cylinder and controls while there. If a boiler is so old that parts are no longer made, we will tell you, so a failure does not come as a surprise.
Every service is carried out by one of our own employed engineers, never a subcontractor. Each carries a Gas Safe ID card showing their photo and the appliances they are qualified to work on, and you are entitled to ask to see it at the door.
The company is Gas Safe registered under 956889. Any work we carry out on the day, whether part of the service or a repair you have agreed, comes with our 12 month labour guarantee.
Autumn is the right time. The heating has been resting through the summer, and anything the service finds can be put right before it is needed every day.
Once the cold weather arrives, most of our gas work is breakdowns, and appointments are harder to choose. An early booking avoids that, and it also means any part that has to be ordered arrives while the house is still mild.
If the boiler has gone well over a year without a service, do not wait for autumn to come round. Ring and we will arrange a visit, because a missed year can already be enough to put a manufacturer guarantee at risk.

A reading of the gases leaving the boiler, taken with an analyser. It confirms the boiler is burning safely and efficiently.
It can. At 318 mg/l, scale builds on the hottest parts, which is why a yearly service and scale protection matter here.
Cleaning an existing filter is. Fitting a new one is quoted separately.
Yes. The CP12 check and record can be completed alongside the service.
Early autumn. September and October leave time to fix anything found before the heating is on daily.
Yes. Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch are the makes we install, and the rest get the same checklist.
Keep up the yearly service and the written record, because most manufacturer guarantees depend on both.
No. Anything found is explained and priced, and nothing is done without your agreement.
Yes. Poor combustion and early scale give no obvious warning, and the service is the only time anyone looks inside with an analyser.
Yes. Servicing alters nothing in the fabric of the house. We protect the floor in front of the boiler and work tidily around old joinery.
We service boilers across Baldock and SG7, from the Georgian and timber-framed houses in the old centre to Clothall Common and the wide streets on the southern side.
Our engineers are directly employed, work from Stevenage and are Gas Safe registered under 956889. We service all makes, including the Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch boilers we fit.
