HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
An annual service catches the slow damage hard water does inside a boiler, before it becomes a breakdown. Here is what we do on a Shefford service and what it costs.

Our engineer isolates the boiler, removes the casing and inspects the burner and heat exchanger for deposits, corrosion or damage. A service that leaves the casing on cannot see any of that, which is why we never do one.
The condensate trap is emptied and cleaned, because in hard water it collects debris that can block it and shut the boiler down on a cold night. The route of the condensate pipe outside is checked at the same time.
Seals are checked, gas pressure is tested and the safety devices are proved, then a flue gas analyser confirms the boiler is burning safely and efficiently.
You get a written record of everything checked, the readings and anything found. If a part is close to failing, you will be told what it is, why it matters and what it costs, and nothing extra is done unless you agree.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
The service fee earns its keep in more ways than one.
Safety: a flue gas test is the only reliable check on combustion
Efficiency: a clean burner and exchanger waste less gas
Warranty: most manufacturers require a yearly Gas Safe service
Fewer breakdowns: worn seals and blocked traps get caught early
Skipping a year rarely causes an immediate problem. It is the second and third missed years that tend to end in a winter breakdown, and in a guarantee claim that is turned down because the service history has a gap in it.
A full annual service in Shefford is priced at £99 + VAT (£118.80 including VAT). There is no call-out charge on top for a weekday appointment.
If we are already in your house repairing something, the service can be added for £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT), which takes about thirty minutes.
Parts, if any are needed, are priced separately and explained before anything is ordered. The written record and the combustion test are part of the service, not extras, and the price does not change because the boiler is old or hard to reach.
Central Bedfordshire is supplied by two water companies, and neither the council nor the companies have confirmed which serves Shefford. Third party mapping links the town to a zone its supplier classes as very hard, so we treat Shefford water as hard and do not quote a number for it.
Scale collects in the heat exchanger and, on a combi, in the plate that heats your taps. Over time it makes the boiler noisier, slower and less efficient, and a service is when we spot it early, before it shows up as a lockout or a cold shower in the middle of winter.
The condensate trap is a good indicator. If it is full of grit and flakes, the heat exchanger above it is usually carrying scale as well, and we will show you what came out.
Building Regulations guidance sets 200 mg/l as the point above which the cold feed to a combi ought to be treated, and on the evidence available Shefford water is past it. On each service we look at the protection you have and tell you plainly what is missing and what is not worth spending money on.
A scale reducer on the incoming main to a combi
Inhibitor at the right strength in the heating circuit
A magnetic filter, cleaned on the visit
The condensate trap and pipe clear
Radiators heating evenly
Hot water reaching temperature without a fight
Check your boiler’s paperwork, as many manufacturers set water treatment conditions in hard water areas. A magnetic filter is quoted separately if one is not fitted, and if the system water is dirty we will explain whether power flushing in Shefford is actually needed.
No written record in the last year
A boiler that kettles or bangs as it heats
Hot water that is slow or swings in temperature
Pressure that needs topping up again and again
A boiler that locks out every cold snap
Any of these is a reason not to wait for the autumn. Call us and we will book you in; any repair is priced before it goes ahead. If an engineer is already with you for a repair, the service can go on the same visit at the add-on price.
Casing off, burner and heat exchanger inspected, flue gas readings taken, and a written record of what we found.
Shefford’s conservation area takes in medieval timber frames, eighteenth century red brick and Victorian cream Gault brick under clay tile and Welsh slate roofs. Boilers in houses like these often sit in awkward corners, with flues run to wherever was permitted.
We check the terminal outside as well as the connection at the boiler, and note anything built or fitted too close to it since the boiler went in. If anything on a protected wall ever needed changing, we would flag the planning side first. In the flats made from the old maltings, tell us how the engineer reaches the boiler when you book.
The yearly gas safety check and record (CP12) can be carried out on the same visit as the boiler service. That means one appointment to arrange with your tenant rather than two.
Remember that a service and a gas safety check are different things. The CP12 is a legal requirement for landlords, while the service keeps the boiler healthy. One does not replace the other, but doing both on the same visit means one engineer, one appointment and one set of paperwork.
Book a few weeks before the current record runs out so there is room to fix anything the check turns up, and keep the service record and the CP12 on file together. Our landlord gas safety page explains the check itself.
September or October. The heating has been off since spring, and a service before the cold weather means any fault is found while you can still manage without the heating for a day. A boiler that has sat idle all summer is also more likely to show a fault the first time it works hard.
Diaries fill quickly once the first cold week arrives, and a boiler that fails in December is always more disruptive. Landlords who line up the service and the gas safety check for the same autumn visit keep their paperwork on one date each year.
A standalone service takes longer than the thirty minute add-on, because the boiler is opened from scratch, and a cramped cupboard or flue adds time.
We service combi, system and regular boilers of all common makes, including older regular boilers with cylinders and loft tanks in the town centre and newer combis on the estates east of Ivel Road.
We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, plus Worcester Bosch, and selected boilers we install carry manufacturer guarantees of up to 12 years, which depend on a yearly service record.
If a boiler is getting old and parts are becoming hard to find, we say so on the record. That gives you time to plan a replacement on your terms rather than after a winter breakdown.

Emergency response within the hour
Our average response to an emergency call is under an hour across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
Allow more than the half hour an add-on takes, because nothing is open yet when the engineer starts. A cramped cupboard adds to that.
It cannot promise that, but it catches many problems early, such as a failing seal, a scaled heat exchanger or a blocked condensate trap, while they are still cheap to fix.
Most manufacturers require one by a Gas Safe engineer. Check your warranty documents for the exact terms.
The CP12 can be done on the same visit. Ask when you call and we will explain what is involved.
Yes. We fit mostly Vaillant and Ideal, plus Worcester Bosch, and we service all common makes.
It is £99 + VAT (£118.80 including VAT), or £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) added to a repair visit.
It behaves like hard water in the boilers we open, and third party mapping links the town to a very hard zone, though the supplier has not confirmed which zone serves SG17.
Yes, on every service, with the readings written on your record.
You are told what it is and what it would cost to fix. Nothing is done until you agree.
It is optional. It traps magnetic sludge before it reaches the boiler, and fitting one is a separate quote.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. Our registration is 956889.
We service boilers across Shefford and the rest of the SG17 district, travelling in along the A600 from Stevenage.
From the older houses in the town centre to the newer estates east of Ivel Road, the service price is the same. Ring with your postcode if you are unsure whether we cover your address. The engineers are our own, and the vans are fully stocked.
