  • Low boiler pressure. The single most common cause of a boiler not working in any UK home. Below 0.5 bar and the boiler refuses to fire. Top up via the filling loop to 1.2 bar; if pressure keeps dropping, you’ve got a leak that needs investigating.
  • Frozen condensate pipe. Source of about a third of our December and January callouts. Look for error codes “EA”, “E133” or “D5”. Pour warm (not boiling) water along the external section to thaw it.
  • Tripped fuse or RCD. Modern combis are sensitive to power surges. A tripped MCB kills the boiler instantly – resetting it gets you running, but repeated trips mean an electrical fault.
  • Thermostat or programmer issues. Flat battery in a wireless thermostat, programme schedule reset after a power cut, smart thermostat losing WiFi – all common, all quick to identify.
  • Air in the heating system. Cold spots at the top of radiators, gurgling noises, or a boiler firing but radiators staying cool. Bleed each radiator with a radiator key, then top up pressure via the filling loop afterwards.

  1. Check the pressure gauge. If below 1.0 bar, top up via the filling loop to 1.2 bar.
  2. Confirm the thermostat is calling for heat – check batteries, programme schedule, and that the temperature is set above current room temperature.
  3. Check the consumer unit for a tripped RCD or MCB on the boiler circuit. Reset if tripped.
  4. Note down any error code on the boiler display. Photograph it if you can.
  5. In cold weather, check the condensate pipe (the white plastic pipe exiting the boiler externally). If frozen, pour warm water along it.
  6. Try a boiler reset. Most combis have a reset button – pressing and holding for 5–10 seconds clears a lockout. Don’t press it more than twice – repeated resets won’t fix an underlying fault.
